in today on fedex - my son's 12th b'day - had a blast with the girl in receiving at work as i cautiously unwrapped the box that said "perishable" on the outside - fedex driver had no clue - there are very small stickers on smr's boxes that say live animals but very discreet - anyway - it was so kool - very lethargic when it first came out of box - but time i got home was really smokin around the little container - anyways turned him loose - he immediately begin to look to burrow or hide and within 5 minutes was neatly tucked in the rock hide on the right - later found him out already exploring born in july - right at 4 months old - looks to be about 15 inches long - have no clue his weight - attatched are some pictures - i want more !!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations on your new baby! You can't go wrong with Don's stock. I have two of my own from him and couldn't be happier! :}

Yeah I have had a blast doing online shopping, federal express delivery, for snakes. Just received in six more today myself. Isn't it great to open the box and see the little ones inside. Oh and two of mine are from Don as well, congrats. Now...the hard part is leaving them alone to settle in. Anyway congrats again

yeah me too - hard to leave them alone - i just wanna handle him
i do want more - BUT - i like having them in a nice tank for viewing since i'm new i guess - got about $150 in the viv and snake - maybe try and afford one more this year????

They don't, but they live. As for it being humane... they are (when shipped from a good breeder) shipped with cool or warm pads to compensate for temps, and only through overnight shipping.

Ah alright. I doubt there are more breeders who practice good procedures than not though.
The herp community is pretty small. Breeders who do not practice good husbandry and shipping are quickly found out and will have a hard time selling their snakes in the future.

You don't have to tell me...It costs me $100 to set up a ten gallon the way I like it, including buying the new tank because mine are always full, NOT counting the thermostat!!

Here's what to do. Your baby will be ready to move into a 20L, so you buy that later, move him in, and then discover empty viv syndrome!

How do the snakes like being shipped around the country though? It doesn't seem particularly humane.

It probably doesn't disturb the snake very much. A certified shipper goes through a rigorous process to become certified with FedEx. This includes sending in a test package. You must pack this exactly like you would with a live snake, right down to the heat or cold packs and taping the deli cup lid shut. FedEx has a publication that lists the requirements for packaging live animals. When the package arrives at the testing center, it undergoes a number of tests to make sure your precious baby cannot be harmed. The box is crushed with 400# pressure. (That's what the styrofoam lining is for, to make the box strong enough to withstand that!) It is shaken for an hour. Then the box is opened and everything inside better be in place and safe.

The deli cup or bag is cushioned with peanuts, shredded paper and or crumpled paper. Cold packs are wrapped in newspaper and taped to the sides of the box. Heat packs are placed in empty deli cups so they don't come in contact with the snake and so they can stay exposed to air and stay activated. The snake itself is packed in a small cup, with paper towel or aspen or shredded paper or something to burrow in and cushion it. This is taped shut so the snake can't accidentally escape. If in a bag paper towels are added for cushioning/burrowing and to absorb moisture. The bag is securely fastened by tying, cable ties, or tape, so the snake can't escape by accident. The bag is sized just right so the snake stays coiled up comfortably.

Then they are sealed into the box, taken to FedEx right before closing (say 5 or 6 PM) and on their way. If held at FedEx for pick-up, you can get your baby by 9:30 AM. Less than a day in transit. The shipper has closely watched temps on their end, your end, and the hub in between. Live arrival is guaranteed by the shipper. The shipper doesn't want the snake to arrive in poor shape, so much attention is paid to proper temps when shipping. Often, the shipper will have you take the temp inside the box so the conditions under which the snake was shipped are known. It certainly _shouldn't_ be an unpleasant experience for the snake at all. Less than a day curled up in a nice cozy place with temps as perfect as humanly possible.

In a perfect world....

But we don't live in a perfect world. Last week FedEx left my snake on the doorstep. Temps were in the 50s at the time. I discovered her an hour or so later. They probably knocked and I didn't hear them.

Needless to say she was pretty cold. And annoyed from being so cold.

That really isn't FedEx or the shipper's fault, then.

The shipper could have had her held at FedEx. That's the safest way to ship, although not the most convenient, so some people choose not to have their snakes shipped to hold. That situation can be easily avoided, though.
