Zilla sliding top vivs and thermostat probe question

bapkate

Katherine
I have my hatchling in a sliding lock top Zillah critter cage, but I didn't see an obvious way to run a thermostat probe from the inside of the bottom of the cage out to the thermostat.

So I poked a hole in the wire top and ran the probe in that way (if I missed the correct way to run wires through this kind of cage, pleeease someone enlighten me. I'm baffled that a vivarium doesn't have a built in measure to run wires).

I made it as small as possible, but now I'm worried that Wade will manage to widen it by incessant poking (he's obsessed with that spot. It's that ingrained snake escape artist in him!). Right now I have it secured with a little tape (sticky side facing away from the inside of the cage).

Does anyone with this kind of cage have a better solution for this?

I've included some pictures of the cage for reference, and a bonus pic of Wade being sneaky!

Great name for a snake by the way.

Maybe try some hot glue to fill in the area. Let it cool down be for the snake touches it.

Batman and Robin might have some better ideas tho.

i have my probe underneath the tank (outside of it)
i just put it there but adjusted the thermastat with a temp gun based on temps inside the tank

The Zilla Critter Cages should all have a tab that you can easily break off with pliers. I circled what looks like the tab on your cage.

I can't belieeeve I missed that. Cue the forehead smacking of enlightenment!

Thanks for pointing that out :). I'm going to try patching the hole with hot glue.

I know, they look pretty solid. I would have expected the sides of the tab to be slit or something. I wasn't so sure about them myself at first. Happy hot glueing ;)

That's a nice feature, mine must have been made before they added the tabs.

What I wonder is:
If all the new ones are like that and the OP's question has been asked several times before by other people, why didn't someone with a tank with the tabs say so until now?

Much easier (and safer) to put the thermoSTAT probe under the tank between the UTH and the glass.

This way your snake can't urinate or knock the water bowl over onto it causing a spike in your temps.

I would cover that hole up ASAP! Those little tabs break out easily with a needle nose pliers.

I did a couple of searches on this topic and didn't find anything, but judging from Zyzzyva's thread, it's definitely been discussed before. It's possible someone said something in an earlier thread and I just missed it. My search-fu is not strong.

The hole is weeell covered. I wasn't sure about putting the probe outside of the tank because when I was setting up the viv most of everything I read told me to put the probe inside of the tank. The pee/spill point is a good one.

My two tanks aren't zilla's, so I don't have handy tabs to break off to run wires. I am happy to say that I haven't had any escapes since my modifications (yet). Actually, Max has calmed down so much that when I cleaned his viv this past weekend, I just took him out within his toilet paper roll and he stayed in one spot while I worked.

They looked just like Zillas in the pictures! Congrats on the successful modifications, and thanks again everyone for your help! I still can't believe I missed those tabs

Hey, just wanted to tell you the hot glue will definitely work... my friend dropped a rock on my Zilla tank's top and put a gash in the screen, and hot glue did wonders. Very secure. Ugly, but secure. lol.

And by the way, I almost did the very same thing, so it's not just you!
