Have never noticed that in hatchlings, but I always smell that around eggs, in the 24 hours before I see the first pippie!

In fairness, I have a friend with three housedogs, who boards and takes in rescues as well. Her house is scrupulously clean as are the animals, but to me, the place "smells of dogs". She can't smell anything at all and thinks I'm nuts. I think if we live with any kind of smell long-term, then people unused to it are going to detect it - no matter how slight or subtle.

I agree with this statement. Because we love and live with our animals we don't notice the smell.

I think kingsnakes are _really_ strong smelling. And I can smell it the minute any of the snakes poop. And I know what you mean about the smell baby corns have- they musk, but you can't actually see/feel anything, but you can smell it! It isn't horrible like garter musk; it's a more herbaceous smell.

The only time I've ever "smelled" snakes is when they had dirty cages. Very dirty. I've been in a house full of snakes, and not every cage was clean.. there's a definite odor there. I've smelt it in my own house the day before cleaning time, though it was much milder. But aside from the smell of dirty poo, I don't think they fill the house with anything. Except maybe aspen.

I may be insensitive to it though.. not because I have them, but because the smell of ferrets in the next room just makes everything else seem irrelevant.

My room has a distinct smell to it, I'm not offended by it but my wife says it stinks. I've asked friends and they say it has a smell but not a bad one.

Every animal has a smell - but human noses are usually not sensitive enough to smell reptiles - except when they smell like bell peppers, lol!

I notice the bell pepper smell just days before the eggs hatch.

I do believe that we don't smell it because 1. we're used to it and 2. it's really very light.
My MBK does smell somewhat "reptilian", with the rest I don't notice anything. My bf can smell them though, he says. Not much, and not disturbing, but it's there.

LOL That cracked me up... I used to have a ferret and boy was he smelly! I loved him though.

I've notices a very light scent with the snakes...more so the corn than the BP. I'd agree with the descriptions of 'herbacious' or 'bell pepper' although nither is quite right...closer than anything I've thought of. It is a light, 'green' sort of smell. I like it quite a bit...not that i'm allways 'sniffin' snake' but its still pleasent. Its most noticable for me when (of course) changing the substrate or feeding.
I dont think its ANYTHING comparable to litter box, mouse bedding, rat turds, or stinky boyfriend. LAMO!!

Tell your friend she smells like Dog. (if she has one. if not, pick a pet she's got...ie: cat, bird, mouse, tiger, boy...) See if she gets offended. If so...well. You've made your point.

Maybe it is the newly hatched babies. Hatching can go on for a fair amount of time here. Maybe that is why I only smell it at some times and not others. I haven't smelled it for quite a while now. I will try to pay more attention this hatching season.

Got my mom to go outside then come back in and smell my snake room... she has a sharp nose and said she couldn't smell anything different, "not even teenager", so I guess I'm in the clear. Glad to know I'm not the only one who smells something "planty" sometimes though, I thought I was going insane!

The smell of repti-bark makes me want to barf. My dogs also LOVED it and chewed open a bag all over the house. Were you using that? I have been using newspaper as of late because it doesn't have a sent even with elimination. It's not pretty but the smell of aspen and reptibark are not something Im fond of.

Thankyou so much, I had a hard time staying away but thought too many people disliked me.... ANYWAYS, like I mentioned reptibark smells like poop. I can def. smell repti bark walking in somwhere.

Pepper, if I missed it, what are you using? (just so I can bypass page 4)

YBH, I can't speak for others but I certainly did NOT get that impression and I can say for sure that I don't feel that way.

I get the sweet pepper smell too! When I open the incubator and smell it, I know there will be pippies very soon, if they are not already peeking out at me

I also noticed it this year with the hatchlings, for the first few weeks of life, whether it was musk as Nanci suggested or it just comes with their first few toilets I don't know. It's feinter after hatching but still there for a while.

I have sometimes noticed with a newly purchased corn snake, usually juvenile or older, a slight leathery smell? Don't know if anyone else has noticed that? Not unpleasant at all and it seems to disappear within a couple of weeks or by the next shed

ZooMed aspen shavings, and it smells GREAT, especially when wet. Like a fresh, clean forest. If you're smelling poop, it's probably because your snake pooped. I've never dealt with ReptiBark but I can't imagine it smelling like poop without there actually being some involved somewhere.

I only used reptibark for a little while but I always thought it had an earthy forest kind of smell so I would agree that if it smells like poop maybe there's poop lurking somewhere. In fact, that's mainly why I switched to aspen. I liked the smell of the reptibark (aspen smells even better, though) but it's way easier to see where they've pooped on the aspen.
