R.I.P. Scarlett

Cool Kid
Well, I went to the expo today with some friends and I got a beautiful Baird's. I decided to name him Salem after the cat from Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I always thought that cat was hysterical. :D

I took him home, and was cleaning cages. First, I cleaned Brutus and Franks cage. After that, I went to clean Scarlett's. I knew before I even took the lid all the way off - the smell hit me. She was dead.

Scarlett has been a problem eater since I got her in November. She had one good feed, and since then she's been all problems. I don't have the calendar right next to me, but she did have at least 2 regurges, maybe 3. She was tiny. All of 5.6g last time I weighed her. She's been on pinky heads for the past 6 feedings, and I was planning on keeping her on just pinky heads for a few more feedings. She's been losing weight, even though she's been eating and pooping steadily since her last regurg on January 9th. (I remember that date only because it was my birthday party).

I loved Scarlett, and I loved the time I got to spend with her.. I don't think she would have done any better under anyone elses care. I took everyones opinions and advice into consideration, and into action, when I cared for her. I barely handled her - only to clean her cage and feed her and check her shed. I kept her humidity and temperature perfect.. I quarantined her constantly. I did everything I could. I just don't think she was meant to make it.

I loved her to death.. R.I.P. my little blood.

I'm sorry for your loss, Jeni. It sounds like she had problems that just couldn't be overcome no matter how conscientious the care.

Thank you, Wendy and Nanci. I've been in tears on and off since I found her.

It's so hard to lose a pet that you love so dearly. I was hoping she could make it through.

Thanks, Patrick. I'm trying.

This is the first of my snakes that I've lost. It's a whole different hurt than other pets, for some reason.

The sad thing is, she wasn't even my closest snake.. It's just that, when you deal with one through so much sickness.. When it actually dies, it almost feels like you're a complete failure - on top of actually LOSING the snake itself.

Double whammy.

I am so sorry....
I just lost one too and aside from a hunger strike she had never been a problem....but I know how it feels.

It sounds like a lot of people have been losing snakes lately. I know both Hallie and Robbie lost some.. What the heck?

Hey Jenny Penny. Hope you are feeling better. You are always welcome to call me again. <3 Your little Scarlett was a pretty girl and she had the best mommy out there. Don't forget that huny. :) She's looking down on you smiling and thanking you for giving her the best two months of her life.

Tell me why that legit just made me cry.

Thanks, Bree. You're a doll. <3

Thanks, guys. It's a hard time for me right now. Everything is sucking hardcore.. But I gotta focus on my other lovely snakes! :D

Especially my beautiful new Bairds ;) Yummy little boy.

I too know what it is like to try so hard to save a snake that is not doing well only to loose them in the end, I am so very sorry your Scarlett did not make it!
