Garters everywhere!

become passers-by
Yesterday was my birthday and I decided to celebrate by taking advantage of the nice weather we're having in Toronto. Herping was in the back of my mind, but I didn't expect to find what I did: at least a dozen garter snakes recently emerged from their hibernaculum, also taking advantage of the sunshine. These guys were amazingly curious and friendly; one insisted he climb on top of my camera while I was taking his picture, thereby blocking out the photograph with a big blurry snake belly. Definitely the best birthday present a snake lover could get!

This little blood red garter was pretty special. Now if I can find a melanistic garter, the season of spring will be complete!

Hey, man love the garters :) i am also in toronto and i also go herping for garters. where abouts do you go looking around for yours??

awww you're lucky I never see any garters I don't exactly look but still I would think I would see them from time to time

If I did want to go looking where would be the best place to look?

LOL its alright. well if you know that there are garter snakes around. you should try a field like a medow or near a pond. me and my family go at about 9 in the morning, and we catch around over 100

do people actually catch them and keep them I wouldn't cause they could infect my other snakes with something but do people keep them?

Sometimes people do keep them, but your right sometimes we catch them and they have mites on them.

you could catch a few males and females and breed and sell the captive bred hatchlings(yes I know they do not lay eggs and are born live)

It some of the pics its like there body is missing

yeah I just noticed that lol it is just because there body is going off to the side so it isn't seen in the pics(if you guys are wondering what he is talking about it is in pic 2 and 3)

What fun! Just wondering, what are your day & night temps up there at this point?

According to the Weather Network, since the first of April the highest temperature has been 24.3°C and the lowest has been 7.3°C. I'd guess on average it's been between 11-21°C through the day and around 9-10°C at night. Very unseasonably hot sun too; it is heating surfaces like wood and rocks way above the ambient temperature.
