Display rack build under way

Scrufdog

that one guy
Building a display rack. I'm not much into tubs, unless needed. The front will have 36x12 inch plexiglass doors on hinges. I'm going to install false bottoms with sealed hardboard for UTHs, and small overhead LED lights (red and white).

These were from last night, after a couple hours of work. The strap is 2 robe belt thingies tied together to be my extra set of hands.

Keep them coming want to see what it looks like with the other things you talk about and when finished.

I'm gonna order the plexiglass this weekend, hopefully have it by Friday. While I'm waiting I'm gonna start working with the lights this week.

Looks awesome! :)I can't wait to see the final product.

A little note about the plexi doors, having full doors that swing up/down tend to get in the way with my experience. You either have to hold it up the whole time or reach over it to get to the cages, which can be especially hard towards the bottom ones. Have you taken this into consideration?

I plan to install little clips on the side of the shelf that will hold open the doors as they swing up.

We started to build one our selfs on friday, today we took the 36.00 3/4 inch melin board and got a white corrigated one like you are using for yours. That will make my cabnet a bit lighter and I will not have to drill big holes for vents now. Thanks

I'm finally done. I was short on time and money for a bit there, but that gave me time to fine tune things in my brain. Here is the basically finished product. Tomorrow I just clean up the wiring behind it and tuck it against the wall, then move it the corns.

Lights done. Zoey inspecting things for proper connections.

Heat cable down. Shelf 3 has an extra wrap so that the python's lair is warmer than the corn snake's shelves.

P1010659.JPG

Ceramic tiles on the heat tape, later to be sealed with silicone.

P1010661.JPG

Just about done. Tiles down, silicone sealed, modified shrink wrap tubes attached.

Akki was the first one to move it. She seems to like it so far. Was cruising around in it for about 30 minutes before settling in under her warm hide.

Wow, I wish I had that talent. I'm still trying to figure out if I have a speck of talent to build a basic shelf.

It was a fun project, but I dunno if I'd do it again... maybe, since now I know exactly what to do.

For comparison, the inside dimensions are 36"L x 15"W x 16"H. It works out to about 37 gallons. It's just a little smaller than a 40g breeder.

4 tanks are built, the bottom can be made into a tank without much effort. Currently the plexiglass slides out towards the left of the shelf for access. I have set it up so that if at some point sliding sideways out wont work anymore, I can make a couple cuts and convert the doors to lift out of the tracks to be removed, kind of like a sliding glass door.

Finished up today. Got the corns moved in. Everyone seems fairly chill.

Orichimaru crusied around for about an hour.

Orihime is hiding out, she's in blue.

All 3 currently is use.

Wow I have to say that shelving is absolutely gorgeous!!! The vivs are so naturalistic. That's something like I would want to do when I get more space/more little buddies. So you had said earlier that you want the plexiglass to swing up, was it just cheaper/easier to make it slide out to the side? I would do the side slide-outs if I ever made one. And how does the plexiglass stay in place?

I went away from hinged because it meant I would need to add small clips here and there so that the snakes couldnt flex the plexi and get out. I ended walking around Home Depot for over an hour looking for something I could use for sliding track, since they dont sell it anymore. I found a Lattice Divider, which looks like a stretched tall H from the side. It has a 1/4" track, perfect for 3/16" plexi. Also, since its an H, it serves as a bottom track for one viv, and the top track for the viv below it.

So now I dont have hinges and extra clips all over the place. Once the plexi is in place it looks like it simply sitting in a white frame.

What was the final cost & where did you get all of the supplies?
Also, when you get a chance, will you list the supplies you used
to make this? It looks awesome, & I'd love to build one!

Home Depot and E-street plastics. I'll work up a list and take a vid of how the plexi works. Gimme a day or 2. I'm not sure about final cost, i think somewhere around $500, but I did pay attention... I'll try to hit a better number when I do the list.

AWESOME WORK! That really is an amazing rack. I love the paper towel roles on the wall, and you did such a great job of transforming the space into something beautiful to look at! Hope your snakes are very happy.

Wow lucky find but that's clever with the lattice divider. I'll keep that in mind :-]

ok, here's the vid.

As far as price goes... I'm gonna wing it here... all prices are off the top of my head, but should be close.

Melamine wood - 2 uprights, 7 shelves = $120
Estreet plastics (x5) - $126
Melamine peg board - $16
Lattice Dividers and ends - $40
Vinyl edge - $10
13x13 tiles (x5) - $5
Foil tape - $7
Silicone II caulk x2 - $11
Flourescent fixtures (x5) (ebay) - $30
Flourescent bulbs (x6) (ebay) - $20
Extension cord for wiring lights - $9
Misc hardware (screws, pegs) - $10
Small trim to hide 12v wires - $6

Red LED lights - $14
12v power supply, no idea I have tons of extras, probably $10

Repti-cable (x2) - $34

I had the ReptiTemp 500r's (x2), but those usually go for about $25 each
Light timers are usually $10

So, building it from scratch would be somewhere around $528. Granted most people will already have some of the stuff you need, so it should come in under $500.
