Hi all!

Addict and proud of it!
Hey, new to the forums and corn snakes (don't have any experience with other snakes either:rolleyes:) so I figured I would scour the forums and glean whatever info I could to make caring for this animal a more enjoyable and rewarding experience. Before I do, though, I wanted to say hello and introduce my newest family member, Orion.

I just got Orion from pet smart this past Saturday and thought after looking at some pics he/she (haven't sexed the snake yet) looked like an Amel Motley Banded. One of the guys I work with said it looks more like a Candy Cane or Creamsicle. He breeds Ball Pythons and Corns so I'm prone to believe him but wanted the input of some other experienced breeders/owners.

Any input/ideas/suggestions would be welcome.

As an added note I did research before I got Orion. I went the easy route and got one of the start kits that Zilla makes. It isn't anything fancy but it was what my budget would allow. I have two hides in a 10g tank, one on the uth side and one on the cool side that also has a water dish built into it. It has a day incandescent light and a thermo/hygro combo. The substrate is the flat green kind that you roll out (not sure what the actual name of the type is) and I plan to add some Aspen later.

Two days in and Orion is already out and exploring his hides and basking in the light.

Orion really surprised me, though. The girl at Pet Smart said he hadn't been fed yet (not sure what the time period was) and I was sure the animal would be so stressed from changing addresses that it wouldn't eat. Well, my wife proved me wrong an hour later when she thawed a pinkie and Orion struck at it and swallowed the little thing like he hadn't eaten for a while. The first time the snake struck at the pinkie it scared the crap out of my wife and she dropped it, but when she picked it up and tapped Orion's nose with it the snake didn't hesitate to take it.

I plan to follow a 5 to 7 day feeding schedule until Orion gets a little size on and then adjusting from there.

Again, any input is welcome and would be greatly appreciated.

Hey man good luck with it. I am not good with morphs but I can tell you its not motley and if it is its not like any I have ever seen

Thanks for the replay. Maybe the the site that had the photo gallery had some links to pics wrong too.

Its def not motley but for the morph I'd say amelanistic? Unless u know the genetics of the parents, one of them would have to be a creamsicle. I thought mine was an amel until the breeder I got him from told me he's a creamsicle b/c that's what the mom is. If one parent is a creamsicle hybrid, all of the babies are hybrids.

Now that you mention it I do remember reading that on these forums. I'll see if Pet Smart has that info on hand but I highly doubt it.

Update:

No, Pet Smart only gets them as "assorted corn snakes" so I will never know for sure. That's alright though Orion was purchased as a first pet snake, not as a breeder. The animal is beautiful and even without having handled it yet I already enjoy coming home and watching my newest family member.

I was thinking that it is an Amel... but what do i know, i'm pretty new too. Congrats on your new purchase and i home you enjoy him as much as i enjoy mine

@Haarstad, thanks. I'm sure it has some amel traits from the little bit of reading that i have done. Just curious about specific type but like I said its no problem I'm happy just having Orion here.

I just got some aspen bedding and some feeding tongs and handled him for the first time so that I could add that bedding to his home. H/She didn't offer to strike or even get into the position to do it when I reached in. Orion is very fast though! I am going to have to read up more on handling snakes and practice a bit so that I don't startle the animal switching hands. My movements were a little fast and I think I inadvertently scared the animal trying not to let it fall or get away.

As soon as I put Orion back in his home he burrowed under the new substrate and hid.

Not that it helps you now, but petsmart's vendor has recently started labelling their "fancy" corns... We got a hypo and an amel motley in our last shipment.

Also, for it to have "not been fed yet", it must have just come in that week. (Usually if it's refused food, the associate would have said "we haven't gotten it to eat yet"). Still, they should have offered you its feeding chart that shows when it came in. If it hasn't been long, you might go back and ask if they have the chart still.

I love amels that look... creamy.. where the colours and borders seem softer than normal. You got a nice catch there, IMO :D

Welcome to the forum!

BTW, here is a pic of my setup. Its very basic so please be gentle.

Very simplistic, nothing wrong with that! I've found my corns really like having some fake leaves to play in... and I'd recommend getting a good digital thermometer with a probe to tell the temperature on the UTH.
That stick-on one isn't very accurate and will only tell you the temp of the glass where it's stuck which can be quite a bit different from the glass right over the UTH.

Does your corn like that bowl/cave combo? i was looking at those the other day.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome and the kind words. I was honestly looking at the Pueblan Milk snake when my wife saw Orion. She fell in love instantly and I loved the colors that H/She has also. I might get a milk snake later but I am more than happy with our newest family member.

The apricot pueblan at my store is absolutely crazy. he flails, musks and then proceeds to gnaw on any finger that he can get. The regular pueblan we had before him was the same way... no wonder he stayed at the store for a year before he finally got a home!

I read somewhere they were pretty laid back. Hmmm ... happier with my purchase of a corn snake now then I was before. Thanks for the heads up.

All snakes vary, who knows, maybe our two were just ... special :p

I wonder why the scott county shelter comes to my store rather than the one you went to? I found my husky-mix at the Scott County shelter when they came last year... had to drive all the way to Georgetown to pick her up!

Orion seems to love the hide/water bowl (haven't figured his/her personality out completely yet). Spends a lot of time under it.

Thanks for the info on the leaves and thermometer. When I can I'll upgrade that stuff. The humidity seemed to jump pretty fast today but I think that is b/c it is getting ready to storm outside.

You might want to do surgery on that tree branch hide before you run into a problem!!

And he'd porbably like some suction cup vines on the sides, and a scrunchy vine on the ground along the back.

What do you me "run into a problem"? Will it harm the snake in any way and if so what do I need to do?:eek1:

Thanks for the info BTW.
