2 snakes, 1 cage?

oh i dont know how to start my own post but im interested in adding live plants to my terrarium.
Any suggestions? I was thinking something like lucky bamboo so its strong enough for them to climb......

theyre not competeing for resources...theyre plenty of everything in their home...its a 50 gal plenty of room, hides, humidors, climbs, water bowls etc. Theyre living the life....ill post pics of them when i buy a camera. I'm not trying to argue, i joined this forum to learn more about corns from other owners so i respect your feed back, but I know the signs of stress and mine havnt expressed any....again every snake is different = )

Honestly, I am not trying to steer you wrong here, but when 2 snakes are together it is not because they are friends or want companionship. Both want whatever that space offers at that time. The temp or humidity or whatever it is is perfect for that animal at that time and the fact that another animal is there is stressful.
Kind of like if you have to go to the bathroom, and someone you hate is standing right by the toilet and won't leave.
Can you please give me one reason to keep them together that benefits them?

I know it sounds harsh, but corns are solitary animals. It is my opinion that it is cruel to force them together.

there is another thread where people were talking about using grass as substrate, but you have to be careful about mold. maybe if you kept it as like a potted plant inside of the tank with the snakes. that would help isolate any potential growth for bacteria or mold, that sort of stuff.

You may find you have the problem of getting the plants enough sunlight without overheating the snakes. Then of course the snakes may dig it up, flatten it and if all else fails poop all over it! Plus it may make cleaning the cage really really difficult and cause bacteria to have a fielday....

If you click on search and type in "live plants" you should find some info on that. If not go to to the husbandry forum and at the top left side there is a "New Post" option, click on that and make your new thread.

cool thanks everyone...
ps i like your bathroom point, it definately made me laugh but is very true!!

my corn is adopted, he's an adult. when i got his tank all set up, after his first feeding he literally pooped on every item in the tank that was new. he came with one water bowl and a fake branch with leaves. two log caves, a corner bowl and that driftwood jungle gym stuff, he pooped on all of it.

Just think about it, ok? Your snakes depend on YOU! I have kept snakes since 1995 and corns since 1996 and now I have over 40 and every single one of them has his or her own place to call home.

But you do clean it out right? You dont just leave the fecal matter in there do you?

well, yeah i cleaned it. after i rubbed his nose in it and made him think about what he did. it stinks too much to NOT clean it. the worst is when he goes in the water dish. that's why i have two.

oh my goodness!!!! I am somewhat new to this forum and have never posted before...I am shocked at the childish comments sent back and forth!!!
I have two corns housed together...and they are best of friends!!! They follow eachother around, they curl up together, they are constantly interacting. Very rarely are they at apart. Except of course for feedings.
I got my second corn about a week after my first and they lived together in a 10 gal. tank for about a year and a half....never encountered a problem. No signs of stress, eating regular etc. They now live in a 50 gal. and have plenty of hides, but still almost ALWAYS seem to be side by side.
Thats just my personal experience....hope it helps
So i'd have to say....each and every snake is different, It seems saying yes or no is just an individuals recommendation on the subject.....no need to argue = )

They do not get along. They do not enjoy each others company. They are not social creatures. They are, at best, attempting to tolerate each other. Being next to each other is not a sign of liking each other. They ARE competing for resources. That spot makes them feel the most comfortable, both snakes want the spot, so they are forced to be next to each other because they don't want to compromise. Or the spot is the best for getting warm, best humidity, best whatever. They do NOT like each other. This has been proven time and time again by herpetologists that snakes are NOT social and do NOT enjoy each others company, no matter what the circumstances are.

What you are doing is anthropomorphizing. You are applying human traits to your snakes, and it could kill them. No, not all snakes will eat each other. Not all will stop eating, etc. But what you are doing could go wrong any week now. Why are you intentionally risking the very lives of your snakes? Is it because you just want to save space? Because you like looking at two in the same enclosure? I would like to know.

You are risking the well being of your snakes. There is no denying that, there is no arguing that. The risks are there, and the only way you can take those risks away is to separate your snakes. Please, for their well being, separate them. They will be much more content that way.

If you STILL think they are social an enjoy each others company, please give us some evidence to support that. Give us one paper, one article, one something that advocates cohabitation and gives scientific evidence as to why it benefits the snake, and what the risks are if any. Please.

And patches, NO ONE has been speaking in absolutes. Not one person.

Thank you VCT, you beat me to it.

Words of the day = anthropomorphize, anthropomorphism, anthropomorphizing.

What are you a child? Put on your big girl pants and learn from someone wiser. On my first post I said something stupid and got called for it, so I quit typing dumb comments and listened for a few months. It's amazing what can be learned when you open your mind.

OR...you can realize you're in the wrong, and admit it like an adult. she's right, you don't have the right to make these decisions for people. that's been part of my gripe in this thread since the beginning. you can't force feed people your opinion like it's a fact. plain and simple, that's where you are all wrong. regardless of what someone's opinion is, you can't make them change it. all you can do is provide the facts and allow others to decide. to do otherwise is borderline fascist. next thing you'll suggest is that new snake owners be sent to a camp to be re-educated.

Not all of them. We will have a senior teem of experts screen candidates. Some may pass the screening,...whereas some will fail the selection process and will be taken away for "intense re-schooling", shall we call it, and thereby prepared for assimilation into The Borg.
