Family rant- "Snakes are evil bs"

I guess I am very lucky. I have grown up in a Christian home with a very religious mother, I have gone to church most of my life. I have never once been told that snakes are bad or inherently evil but rather the devil possesed one. Animals and children are born good and pure without sin or evil. A child or person that gets possesed by the devil is simply possessed that doesn't make all children or ppl bad. My mother doen't like snakes cuz they creep her out not cuz of our religion. She still comes to my house and will even admit that the snakes I've had are pretty....just gross. I feel very sorry for the ppl that have been so misinformed or are so ignorant that they think snakes are evil or bad. I mean its one thing if they could just admit that they are scared or creeped out by snakes but making it about God or something religious really pisses me off. Just grow a set and admit you are afraid.

I think a big part of it is that they're afraid of what they do not know. Too many people make (poor) judgements on stuff they really know nothing about, spouting off "information" that they have been told, without truly learning about the topic they're referring to.
Ignorance can be a very dangerous thing. False information has been spread for years, about various religions, to scare people into thinking it's "evil", when in fact, it's really not. Same thing goes for some animals, like snakes or even pitbulls. They are given a bad name, based on hearsay, when in fact, in general, pitties are really a good breed, it's the owners that misuse them. People talk about "how bad" pitties are, taking what they've heard as "fact".

Totally agree Heather....in the eyes of the ignorant I'm a bad parent because I own 2 ferrets and 1 pitbull and they are in the house and kept with my son. Supposedly 2 of the deadliest types of house pets...since ferrets are illegal in some states I really get alot of flack for that...but in reality it's been proven cats/kittens have caused more harm to infants and children and there are more bites and dog attacks by Labs reported in my county than any other breed. However on the fear note I'm scared to death of spiders...i understand some ppl can't get over their fears but it makes me sad when ppl fear things for the wrong reasons.

See, and thats just it...my mom was very mis-informed and she knows very little about snakes. She knows I have 3 snakes a Corn snake and Two Ball "PYTHONS" (OMG :O ... jk lol) and so even though I have told her that ball pythons dont get very big she still hears "PYTHON" and freaks out. I told her that males hardly get over 3 feet and females over 5 feet and some times not even that close when full grown and she like freaked out like that was big, till I pointed out that my Corn snake is already over 3 feet long. Then I think she kinda a good idea of the size because she has seen my corn snake and couldnt believe he was that long.

How ever its like she hears Python and instantly gets an image of this huge 12 foot monster thats going to kill you in your sleep. And she has seen my cage and knows how secure it is, I have not had a single escape (My corn tried one day when I had the door open about to clean his cage, but I caught him in the act haha, the BPs have never escaped) since I put the balls in the cage (still got to finish that last chamber for Seth) I have caught them trying to push on the door but the latches are waaaaaaaaay to strong for them to even budge the door. O and just so you know its 2 chambers 1 big door, so dont think Im cohabbing haha.

Any way I think shes kinda got the idea that mine are not going to get nearly as big as the snake that was mentioned in my OP about the case going on down in Florida. The good thing is she has seen Seth and even though he is like 39 inches hes not very thick, and im hoping she doesnt realize how thick BPs get or else that wont help (rolls eyes) in her loosing ANY of her fear of snakes. I even got one out one time she cam over, had it around my arm (Jess, shes my baaaaaaaaaaby haha) and she didnt even notice it for almost 5 minutes. When she finally saw it she freaked out, and I just laughed and pointed out how calm she was and how she just wanted to hang out and chill and that she wasnt striking every time some one came near. Now for that exact reason I will NOT get out my male BP Jericho when shes over (Or almost any one for that matter) because he DOES strike out ALL the time so he only comes out when its just me and the kids are in bed and no one else is over, I dont need some one going home telling there mom "Mommy, Charlies snake bit me today" and add to the drama of how "evil" snakes are....

Thanks for letting me Vent a little bit because I am just so frustrated with how some of my family members act about my snakes.

O and Thanks for the info on the case Nanci, since that is what really sparked this whole ordeal to begin with.

I had kittens all my life. Those cute little puff balls are born killing machines. When my cat was a kitten I couldn't pick her up without bleeding, one of the reasons her name is Holly. I've looked up cat smothering when I was pregnant with my youngest son, but I never found any reported cases of a cat smothering a child. My own cats were so aware of the baby and even stood on their hind legs to check the bed or couch before jumping.

My male ball python is such a sweet heart, but I have known of nippy ones. Try to work with him more if you can get the time, it will be worth it.

Meet my mom the one who's 'afraid of snakes and thinks they are icky and creepy'....and meet my new snake Toothless.

Winning the world over 1 at a time!

I am just reading through this post for the first time, and while I have no comment about the biblical/evil implications of snakedom, I think the majority of misconception about snakes is pure ignorance fostered by publicized cases of snake ownership gone horribly wrong. I think the average person has no real interest in understanding snakes outside of periodically seeing them at a zoo. Add to that news coverage of pythons in creeks because some idiot decided to get a snake when it was small and cute and was overwhelmed at it's adult 12' length and just let the thing go. Clearly those snakes scare people. In my own experience, I recently visited a home in a professional capacity for Youth Services only to find a man holding both his 7' long python of some kind (I don't know what) and his premature baby weighing only 3 pounds and just out of the NICU. This made me very nervous...now I don't think that the snake would have decided to snack on the baby...but it was inherently a dangerous thing to do. Im sure that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to situations leading up to snakes being in the news. Unfortunately not all reptile owners are as loving and conscientious as those on this forum tend to be. I was suprised myself at the Hamburg Reptile Show here in Pa just last month to be able to buy a baby alligator (if I had wanted one)...meanwhile the Allentown police department has just pulled their 3rd five foot alligator out of Jordan Creek in the last 2 years. Related? duh.

All we can do is be responsible for our own animals and educate people when we have the opportunity. My 3 corns have done more to change at least 4 adults and 15 kids opinions on snakes from evil/icky/slimy/scary to interesting/fun/beautiful in just a handful of months. As said earlier in the thread...one person at a time.
