Family rant- "Snakes are evil bs"

Believe it or not, I "know" a few vet techs that hate snakes. I don't really know them, I just overheard them talking while I had my snake in an exam room. About a year or so ago I was afraid Spyro was coming down with a respiratory infection, so I took him to the nearest exotics vet. While waiting in the exam room with Spyro, I could hear a couple of vet techs speaking in the back room. I think the door leading from the exam room to the back room was the swinging kind, or it was just really thin; I could hear them quite clearly. One of the women said she hated snakes and that she'd shoot on if she ever came across one on her property. I mean, seriously? Would you say something like that about a dog when you have a dog owner in the next room? And why are you even working in a vet clinic? The doctor seemed nice, I'm not sure where she was but I don't think she was back there when the techs were talking.

I grew up in a christian home ( kinda obvious I guess haha) but even going to church all the time I was taught that Satan POSSESSED a snake, the snake wasnt HIM so I have never seen snakes as all evil, granted I do not like venomous ones but they are not evil, they are just predators like a wolf or bear but on a much smaller scale.

So knowing what I know it just really bothers me that my mom knows the same thing about what the bible says about them yet has that attitude. I mean even when the Jews were out in the desert when they left Egypt as ex slaves Moses was told to make a staff with 2 SNAKES on it and told them to tell the people that those who look at it and believe God would heal them would be healed. So snakes have not always been used as evil objects in the Bible.

She needs to stop believing in fairy tales and get an education. I know that sounds harsh, but I think in this case it is true. The Bible is a wonderful thing, in its place. But in my opinion it has been used to spread more hatred and division than love, and that is wrong. She should stop reveling in her ignorance and learn a few facts.

Totally agree with this.

Heck, doesn't the Bible basically say that rape victims are scum that asked for it, and that women/wifes are objects? Not related directly, just goes along with the 'spreading more hate than love" thing. I'm also just repeating things I've heard; I've never read a religious book and have no urge to, and am also not religious (as much as my parents tried/forced).

I agree with you Beth!

What do you expect your mom (and most other people) to think? If they come from a Christian background, they've likely spent their whole lives thinking of snakes as inherently evil. When you couple that with the media's successful agenda of fear mongering as a form of control, it's a wonder snakes still exist--at least in Christian-dominated countries. Most people are hard to turn away from their preexisting ideas, no matter how unfounded or incorrect, especially if they hear it from "authority figures" like tv anchormen, one-sided "documentaries", and articles in The Sun or People magazine. They don't WANT to be educated, and they'll fight tooth and nail to keep it that way. Evolve? Change their way of thinking? Not if they can keep from it! Why should they? They're comfortable with their world just like it is.
Remind me to tell you about my own mother, someday, and how she thinks we're going to endanger the entire family (who live 250+ miles away) with our parrots, which are apparently going to cause a worldwide epidemic of Bird Flu, all by themselves. Frustrating? Yeah. I hear ya :).
This is very true!

People have their preconceived notions of many things, & are not open to hearing the truth. It would be really nice if people who don't have first hand knowledge of something, should not run their mouth about it.

This is why I hate gossip! Gossip is dramatic and exciting! The truth of the situation is usually boring. So what gets passed around? The gossip. People don't WANT to hear the truth. It doesn't tell them what they WANT to believe.

If you've never read a religious book, then how do you know the Bible says this? Did you personally read it in there or are you going with hearsay? If it's the latter, then this is how I feel:

I find it very offensive that you said this. I have studied the Bible for almost 30 years and I have NEVER seen anything like that anywhere in it, which I have read cover to cover many times. Please don't spread misinformation. Thanks.

My mom is terrified of snakes. Won't come into our house (she lives a couple hours away, and rarely visited before the snakes anyway, so it wasn't a huge deal).

She has never once said anything negative about them, however (to me, anyway). For which I'm grateful.

HSUS cites 12 deaths from snakes in the past 30 years (I definitely don't like HSUS, but they would be trying to say the death toll is higher if anything). That means that a snake kills about .4 people a year.

However, 33 deaths from snakes were reported in America in 2010 alone. How do those statistics match up? How can you say snakes are dangerous when dogs are inherently more so?

Where in the world did you ever get this idea?

I won't even type the 10 page response that I could right off the top of my head disproving what you insinuated.

Repeating things I've heard more than once. That's why I didn't say it confidently or as truth. :shrugs: I guess people are misinterpreting it. Thanks for clearing that up.

Not to be disrespectful or anything, but sometimes I wish the Bible would be rewritten in the way most people talk currently. The old style it and other religious books are written in always confuses me. Just a little thought that popped up.

Read above.
You could actually PM me that if you seriously want to write it. I think it'd be interesting.

Shenzi, thanks for your response. I appreciate you taking what I said so well. By the way, there are several modern translations. You could try the New Living Translation or The Message.

I was thinking about this thread last night. I was riding my bike and passed a man with his dog, which was not on a leash. The dog began to move towards me and was growling a lot. I was nervous. The man was on top of things and he leashed his dog. He said, "Sorry about that. He doesn't like bikes." I was thinking that this was one of a dozen bad experiences I've had with dogs. Once, I was almost attacked by two rottweilers. To me, dogs are more dangerous than snakes for the most part. That doesn't mean I think people shouldn't own them; it just makes the fear of snakes by dog owners all the more ironic to me. ;)

Agreed, very humble response. I wasn't typing out of anger, just out of disbelief that it could be so skewed.

When I said I could reply with 10 pages, I meant that in a gentle way, not an "I'll show you!" way.

If I do great things, but don't have love, I have accomplished nothing. Paraphrasing the Apostle Paul.

Oh, and there are great translations of scripture out today - I hate reading the old King James Version. You are right, NO ONE talks that way, anymore.

My favorite translations are the ones that stick most accurately to the Greek and Hebrew. New American Standard and New King James specifically.

Have a great day, all!

I guess I am very lucky. I have grown up in a Christian home with a very religious mother, I have gone to church most of my life. I have never once been told that snakes are bad or inherently evil but rather the devil possesed one. Animals and children are born good and pure without sin or evil. A child or person that gets possesed by the devil is simply possessed that doesn't make all children or ppl bad. My mother doen't like snakes cuz they creep her out not cuz of our religion. She still comes to my house and will even admit that the snakes I've had are pretty....just gross. I feel very sorry for the ppl that have been so misinformed or are so ignorant that they think snakes are evil or bad. I mean its one thing if they could just admit that they are scared or creeped out by snakes but making it about God or something religious really pisses me off. Just grow a set and admit you are afraid.

The owners of the snake were found guilty today of child neglect and third degree murder. They could possibly face 35 years in prison. I hope they get it.

Ah, you are just so happy about it, you are making sure everyone here knows about it too? ;-)
I hope they give them the max, too.

So it does, shows how good my short term memory is!
I've never had anyone say anything about my snakes based on any so called religious reasons but I have had family get concerned over a BP I snake sat for awhile. They thought it might get big enough to strangle me or our little dogs, if we were careless or it got out of the cage. I don't think people have a very good appreciation for how big and strong different snakes can be. I get the "Wow! That is huge!" response when I tell people that my corns will get to be 4 to 5 feet, rarely possibly 6. I don't think they really understand the difference in the amount of power a 6 ft corn could apply as apposed to what a 6 ft Burm could do, it's all the same in their minds.
