Actually I often pronounce been as ben instead of bin. Though I think I've also said bin. Though I've also said bean. Which is just my point, pronounce it how you want. Okittees for all!

BUT... Have you ever pronounced it "Bun" or "Bahn"?

That, is the question.

no, but who cares. I had a friend Tasha. Now, every other Tasha I have known has pronounced it "Tah (rhymes with fa la la) shah". However, her name was "TA (sounds like the a in apple) shah", or "TASH-uh" I suppose.. That's just how it is. Oh-key-tee, Oh-kuh-tee, okittee, I don't care. Why is cough cough but dough is dough. Because we like to make English impossible to learn.

How about Choir and Chair? Change one vowel, and it changes the sound.

BUT! 2 EE's together NEVER, and I mean NEVER sound like "ah" or "uh".

Ever....

At all.

In the case of okeetee apparently they sometimes do! To some people. There's your exception.

Why does no one ever say "O-Key-Tuh" or "O-kah-tah"? They pronounce the final 2 EE's as a long E sound. Why do the 2 middle Es get no love?

OKAY. How would you pronounce this child's name: "Le-a" ???

Leah?? NO
Lee - A?? NO
Lay - a?? NO
Lei?? Guess Again.

This child attends a school in Livingston Parish, LA. Her mother is
irate because everyone
is getting her name wrong.

It's pronounced "Ledasha",

When the Mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name,
she said, "the dash don't be silent."

SO, if you see something come across your desk like this please remember
to pronounce the dash.
If they axe you why, tell them the dash don't be silent.

Loving how this thread turned!!

Going to add a few I love! Ghosts, corals and fires! All 3 are in my breeding to do list :)

The way I got Okatee was because: I speed read, only way to learn enough to skip grades. So when reading Okeetee on a genetics page, I really only saw the first, last, and the consonants, so my brain rapidly supplied vowels that made sense. You have to admit its easier to say, Okatee than O-Kee-Tee. Second Ive seen it spelled Okatee plenty of times on this site.
