Boa or python?

Boa constrictor constrictor or morelia spilota (coastal or jungle)? GO!

Sorry really can't decide and probably getting a new snake end this year. What are the benefits and downsides to each?

Do you like being bitten? If so, get a morelia spilota ;)

They are EXTREMELY bitey as babies. I've never NOT been bitten by a baby. From what I understand, they settle down with age.

I vote boa constrictor fer sure... I have a BCI, he is more docile than my corns. I love him <3

I heard the same thing about the jungle pythons(very bitey), there is one sitting here at a petshop so I looked into them for a bit and decided they where not the snake for me. I'd go for the boa. I was thinking of getting one but I decided I dont want a snake who feeds on rabbits, my kids are pretty attached to their bunnies and it would probley devistate them if I had to feed bunnies to a snake lol!! So I went with a ball python instead.

o.o There is no reason for a boa to eat rabbits unless you WANT to. They do just fine on jumbo rats.

Ditto. My roommate recently took in 2 adult BCIs: Approx 5.5 ft and 7 ft each. They both came in a bit on the skinny side due to their previous owner's feeding regime. We have them on a regime of ONE large (not jumbo) rat every 2 weeks, and even on this more conservative schedule, they have both gained weight and girth just in the couple months she's had them.

I've also heard it said by a breeder over @ iHerp that she doesn't use anything larger than a large rat for her boas, even the large adult females, and they maintain perfectly.

Remember, boas are easy to overfeed. Most boas in captivity are, indeed, overweight. They don't need as much food as people seem to believe. (Plus, don't forget about dwarf boas, who stay even smaller and, likewise, need even smaller meals.)

Sorry, got a little OT, lol. My vote is on the Carpet. Yes, they are nippy as babies, but most grow out of it pretty well. I've met some really cool and calm sub-adult carpets. They are really fun to interact with.

One thing to consider... Do you want a couch potato snake, or an all-over-the-place snake? Carpets are VERY active. Boas can be pretty active, too, but they're a lot more laid back and more likely to sit with you during handling time than a carpet.

Definitely a boa! My CA Motley male is super sweet and docile.

I'm a Boa guy and I say go with Jungle Carpet.

Some people here, I think, missed the fact that you're asking about a BCC- which are more sensitive, can be more temperamental, and females can rival the size of male Burmese pythons...
It truly depends on the locality of the BCC you have in mind...

If you do want a high quality BCC(Guyana locality which are really reasonable in size), I suggest this breeder:
http://www.deviantconstrictors.com/

Sure, he's not very cheap but I think he's BCC are unrivaled.

Do your math well... you should have easier time with a Jungle Carpet... and they have the Jaguar gene which is awesome.

I like the BCC better but the size is no laughing matter and it takes serious study and quite a few bucks to get a pure locality animal which you can know for sure will reach a reasonable size.

Best of luck.

People have already really nicely covered everything so I'll just add my personal preference: Jungle Carpet. :3

Carpets are no more bitey than any other baby snake....
The bitey tag is an unfair handle to put on them.........
I keep both Boas and Morelia ..... Personally I would get both with the carpet first...... LOL

I vote for Morelia. I have Jungles, a Diamond integrade, a few IJ's, a Coastal, & a couple Jag's (one IJ Jag & one Coastal Jag). I love them all! Most of mine are babies, & like Mike said, lots of babies are bitey. Baby Carpet bites just hurt a little more than baby Cornsnake bites.
I'm not much of a Boa person, so I'm a little biased. Oren has a really good point.

Thanks for all the replies!

The reason why i said BCC is because the only BCI i can find here are the Colombians, which don't stay small either. I figured i might just go with the beautiful colours of a BCC.

As for the biting, i don't really care, i did my research on both already and i know the babies can be bitey.

It's a really though choice for me, for handling i would definitely prefer a boa, and if i find a BCI with nice colors (or even can afford an albino) i would go with BCI over BCC any day. But the carpets activity should make them more interesting to look at.

BCI are a good fit size-wise actually... they are WAY smaller than Suriname Boas for instance- even if the length seems quasi-similar... there's no comparison girth-wise.
If you feed a BCI male properly, he shouldn't exceed 5-6 feet- people tend to over-feed them and that's why they get huge.

Yeah i saw this feeding schedule of Stöckl (famous german locality breeder) and i think i'm going to keep to that.

my red tail was great for the many years i had him , never once bit me or struck at me even during feeding , and would lounge on my desk or hang on me all day . I have been looking for smaller one , checked out a spotted python baby but he was a serious biter and also childrens python baby that was very calm and they stay fairly small.

If you're looking for a little smaller than a Colombian there is always dwarf localities like the Hog Island Boa... Still BCI but tend to average closer from 4-6 feet... They're really cool because they change color through-out the day.

Donald you obviously quoted and kind of ignored what Atmox wrote.

Ignore me... Doing too many things at once...
