Hello: my name is Alicia and my daughter wants a reptile :wavey:

We have fish (dogs, cats & horses too) and have a 30gal tank that doesn't hold water so one of the requirements was something that would fit that tank and wouldn't need an upgrade. My husband kept suggesting a Bearded Dragon, but those need a BIG tank/enclosure when they are full grown and we don't have the room. I ruled out all other lizards that would fit our tank b/c I'm a wussy girl that doesn't do bugs  Our local mom & pop pet store suggested a corn snake, male ball python, kenyan sand boa or a rosy boa as snake possibilities. From there I narrowed it down to a corn snake, they seem to be the easiest for beginners to keep, come in a variety of colors and don't get that big looking. My husband isn't a snake fan, so something with less bulk looks less intimidating ;)

I have lots of reading/learning to do and need to buy all the stuff to turn our tank into a proper snake home, so it will be a few months before we bring our new pet home. But I will be lurking around here and there and I'm sure asking a question or two as well

Welcome Alicia! There is lots of good information here, so read away. You'll learn a lot and be ready when you get your first corn. The first of many, I'm sure.

Welcome!
Nice to see someone else from the Wolverine state.

You made the right choice by going with a corn snake. They're beautiful and pleasant snakes.

There are some very knowledgeable people on this forum so please ask all the questions you need.

Hope you find a great corn snake pet for you and your family.
Here is a picture of my Okeetee corn snake with a few of her babies.

Welcome, Alicia! My husband and I just got our first corn snake yesterday. We faced all the same decision considerations you did, as well (size, intimidating bulk at adult growth, temperament for newbies, etc.). And we considered the same snakes as you, settling on Corn Snake as our best fit. Hope to hear more from you!

I've looked all over and can.not figure out what the little green dots under the post count mean? Are they connected to your post count or how long you've been a member? Are they connected to selling or buying? I guess in the grand scheme of life it doesn't really matter what they are, but they have me curious. Not curious enough to start a new thread asking about them, but curious none the less  TIA!

Hello and welcome! Bit belated. I'm not totally sure what exactly they mean but they are related to your reputation. People can "Rep" a post of yours that they feel was very good. I think you have to make around 150 posts before your repped posts become visible to you. They will be visible in your user control panel, or User CP on the top left of the page.

I believe they show how much "reputation" you have been given. You can add to someones reputation by clicking on the reputation icon at the bottom left corner of their post. For example; I just added to your reputation because you ask a very good question....the more reputation you receive the more green dots.
If you go to your "user CP" (above left) you can see the comment I left for you.

The photo is a Michigan Fox snake taken by Nick Scobel. I saw 3 of these beautiful snakes this year.

Wonderful, thank you for the explanation guys!!
Mark thank you for the comment and the cool pic.
I've actually only seen a few little Garter Snakes hanging around our house, but did find a pretty big shed in our barn among the bales of hay in the spring, so I know there are some bigger ones lurking :D

I sometimes snake hunt and camp at Three river lakes just south of where your at. I find lots of milk snakes and from time-to-time a rare black rat snake. But I don't keep any I find.
Michigan can be a good place to find reptiles & amphibians if you know where to look. I'm already saving-up my pennies for a 2 week herping/camping trip in May-June. :) I'm really addicted to herps..I spend one third of my life taking care of snakes, one third of my life hunting for snakes, and the other 1/3 thinking about snakes. If I'm not mistaken there's a word for this affliction...I think it's called CRAZY. But I'm not alone. :)

Welcome! You made a good choice! Researching and all! However, the sex of a ball python doesn't matter.

Just make sure you do a lot of researching on the different colors/patterns of corns so you get something you can't resist :) Also be warned you are starting an addiction. My first corn led to 6 in less than 2 months. I now have a variety of snakes corns to boas :p big snakes are fun too!

Ask any questions and we can all help!
