Arizona Reptile Expo

So I go to the show and trade all of my jumbo mice to Christen for normal large mice, 'cause none of my snakes are big enough to take them. And what do I do 3 hours later? Buy a 5' milk snake that will probably need jumbo's. :laugh:

There are a number of different kinds of Mexican king snakes. You're not talking about the Blacks, obviously. After that it's the Granite / San Luis Potosi's, which are grey with red markings, and the Thayeri / Variables, which come in all combinations of white, yellow, orange and red. There was an adult labeled Mex Mex for $40 that was right next to my milk of the same price. IIRC that one was grey with thin red bands.
 
I was looking at the $150 dumerils too. I noticed one was missing after a few hours - you must've bought it! I really liked the one on the far right - it had a reddish tint that I thought was beautiful.

And I also noticed that most of the few corns that were there were over-priced. The person with the legless lizards was selling a few adults for $50 each, which wasn't too bad, but most of the babies I saw were very pricey for common morphs.

On a side note, I always find misspellings comical. One person had creamsicles labeled 'cream-cycles'; my boyfriend and I joked about them rolling away.

I also got to meet Kathy and Bill, which was neat. My boyfriend and I had our pictures taken with their super-sweet ball pythons.
 
WOOOO Dumerils!!! Awesome. Cool thing about them is they aren't really evolved to be aggressive, their only real natural predator is the Fossa, and dums outgrow them eventually. Very trusting and forgiving snakes in my experience.

That's what I've heard about them too, and I figured that if I ever keep any larger snakes, they better be super docile! The two that I held at the show were really sweet. It was so hard to say no.
 
I didn't get to see much of the show since we were busy with our table. But I did see the $150 Dumeril's boa. I noticed it because I just recently bought a larger (probably 6' or so) Dumeril's for our photos. They are great pets for somebody who wants a big (but not giant) snake. I have never seen a mean one, although I'm sure one must exist someplace! I like the fact that they get big enough to be impressive (for photos or for pets), but will never get huge like the giant snakes. And their girth is REALLY impressive, too! Unlike some ball pythons, they usually eat anything you put in front of them, so mine will be a good "garbage disposal" for refused ball python food. And they evolved in a climate that (in much of their range) gets both hotter and cooler than that of most central and south American boas (except those from the extreme north or south), so are not as likely to suffer from temperature fluctuations as a red tail boa would.

I would definitely feel better about recommending these as pets compared to most larger boas and pythons, as long as the potential owner knows that they can sometimes get as large as 9' or so, with a very large girth (but usually top out at around 7' or a little more). The biggest one I have personally seen was probably around 8' or so, but looked huge because it was so thick.

I will have her at the show today if anyone wants to see a nice, but fairly average, young adult.
 
A while back I was wanting a Dumerils. Then I posted a thread here about boas, and although there were many different opinions on the perfect boa, several people spoke of the Dumerils, and that reinforced my decision. It was so crowded that I didn't see the baby Dumerils, only a few big ones. So when I saw the gorgeous guy with the reddish peach colors, I snapped him up. Ended up spending too much money:eek1:

I also thought that the corns were overpriced. I did see some babies for $20, but I know that most of you are looking for certain morphs though. One guy was selling normal Balls for $15.

As far as my son's Mex Mex King, he looks to be gray and red, mostly. Again, we LATER found the one for $40, having paid $75 for him. I was also able to pick up a few UTHs and a thermostat for much much cheaper than the pet store.
 
I have to say I was rather disappointed to be honest. Corns were over priced and there was nothing in the way of morphs other than snows and amels, oh and a butter. It got me thinking I should consider doing a booth next year.

There's an expo in Phoenix in two weeks. Maybe you can still set one up there.

I haven't introduced myself to the forum yet but wanted to give thanks to Kathy for spending some time and answering my questions at the show today. Thank You :)
 
I was told not to expect much from the show in December, so I probably won't go.

Christen, you should get a table if you have enough stuff, it's fun.

I saw the $1500 hognose too. I asked the guy what morph it was and he said he didn't know. He said no one knew what it was and he should have it listed for a lot more, but then no one would buy it. I walked away and said "no one will buy it still" in my head. Who knows, maybe it's the next big thing.

For anyone overly disappointed that there wasn't much in the way of corns... check out my site and see if there's anything for you. I'll do 40% off for any local sales this week.
 
Best thing there was that display with the BEAUTIFUL Emerald Tree Boa. He / She was cool! Was not impressed with selection of snakes at all. 90% were ball pythons.
