Male too young?

What's the youngest male you've successfully used to breed? My amel female shed a week or so ago. I have a young male butter, he's around 18 months, weighs around 150g. I put him in a spare viv with her for an hour but no hook ups. I have put them together every couple of days but no luck yet. I can't tell if he's too young or she's not ready. She seemed to take an interest in him, rubbing her head on him and staying put when he crawled over her. Unfortunately my other male ,proven, is in shed at the moment or i would have put him in with her to see if she is ready. Last year it was April when she locked with him, so maybe its one shed too soon?

I've known someone else successfully breed with a 10 month male. Sounds like a readiness issue rather than just the age.

How does the young male behave? Does he pursue the female, or is he indifferent? If she shed a week ago, it might be too soon, still. Or the male might be borderline too young. Does either snake exhibit the jerky twitching that signals interest in mating?

I put snakes together every Sunday until the female is receptive. As a general rule, if they don't mate within 30 minutes, they aren't going to.

Most of my males _will_ breed when blue, but you run the risk of an accidental mating if you use him to determine the female's readiness to breed.

She was doing the jerky dance when he touched her. He was indifferent, no head rubbing or trying to get over her. He did flag his tail when first introduced and had a good smell of her and her shed, so maybe she's just not ready. I really just wanted to try him out as i have a new girl arriving nxt week and was hoping to pair them up after her quarantine time is up.

I guess I'll just keep trying them. its not the end of the world if he's not ready, not like he's going anywhere! Might pop him down to the local reptile shop to get probed just to make sure!

I have had males weighing 60g sire fertal clutches. I'm not saying you should do that or even recommending you or anyone else do that. My mentor passed to me that it was possible. A well respected breeder.

A 150 gram corn snake male should be good to go!

Well, they'll continue with they're Friday night 'date night' until he decides she's the one!
My other male, proven, has just started his hunger strike endless pacing of his Viv. He lives in the Viv underneath the female so maybe soon!

Yay! The boy done good!!! He obviously isnt too young or scared of the big bad females! First hook up today. Will try again on wednesday after i get back from a mini holiday!!

When I pass on things my mentors have advised me of, I generally name them. Carol Huddleston, John Finsterwald, Don Soderberg, Kathy Love. Otherwise, you're just passing on info from Joe Blow, for all we know...
