I surrender to the Borg....

To move the apps around the screen, press down and hold the app icon for a few seconds. It will "detach" and you can move it around, delete it, etc. To move it to another page, drag it to the very edge of of the screen and it will flip to the next page.

To make a folder, move one app you want in the folder on top of another app you want in the folder and release it, it will create the folder with those two apps and give you the option to name it. Then you just detach and move any other apps into that folder.

Ah! Thank you! Connie actually created a folder and moved two icons into it accidentally and I had a devil of a time figuring out how to fix it. I thought she had put her finger onto two icons at the same time, but I can see how what you have described is likely what happened.

I thought she had broken my new phone already.... So did she.

Today Connie and I took the bikes out and rode the St. Marks bike trail. Luckily the new case I ordered for the S8+ came in this morning, and it had a belt clip so I was able to bring along the phone for a test run to see if it would fall off or not. So I promptly forgot I was even carrying it, so it's not like it was uncomfortable or anything. Matter of fact, we were on the section of the trail that had a lot of standing water on both sides, and I nearly ran over a small cottonmouth laying on the asphalt. So as I rode further along the trail, I was thinking that it was too bad I didn't have one of my cameras with me. Well DUH!! Then I remembered that I DID have a camera with me! But I didn't turn back, because another biker heading the other direction has just passed us, so I imagined the cottonmouth was long gone by then.

So when we got down to the end of the trail, we always head down to the boat launch area to walk out onto the little covered pavilion they have there. Some sort of small heron was looking for food along the water's edge, so I decided to try out the camera then. I also tried out the video capabilities, but unfortunately only had it set for 1080 and not 4K. I also had trouble figuring out the zoom function and somehow along the way the camera got itself set to take a "selfie". I didn't figure out how to switch that to the back camera till later, so that ended the video/photography session.

Anyway, I just uploaded the video raw to YouTube to see how it would look. I guess it's not too bad for something from a phone....

And the photographs didn't look to bad neither. So I'm guessing this thing will do in a pinch when I don't have one of the lug along cameras with me.

Well, one interesting thing I did with this little doodad was to take it outside and walk around using it as a Wifi analyzer. Now I have to admit that this was pretty handy.

And I discovered that it can actually monitor my heart rate and blood oxygen level. Maybe sooner or later I will stop having to go to the doctor's office to have the yearly blood work done for my physical exams.

I'm going to throw it into the kitchen to see if it will make me dinner tonight. Connie us up in Delaware visiting family this week. My needs are simple. Just make me a hamburger, please and thank you.

Oh yeah, I tried using that app that lets me monitor Connie's whereabouts while she is on the road. At first it didn't seem to be able to find her, but eventually it started working and I could see that she was at her sister's house.

This might actually turn out to be a rather interesting toy to play with.

Glad you are finding it useful, Rich.

I've had a smart phone for almost 10 years and it has never once offered to make dinner, but it can help. I use my phone as my cooking timer all the time. Today I'm making bread and using it to keep track of the rising time. I asked Siri to set the timer for me for one hour. She set it and also told me that a watched iPhone never boils. Good advice all around.

One more thing. I use it to keep track of all my snake work and records. I have an app called Snakekeeper, but I also keep track of cleanings etc, using the calendar and task list. It is nice to never unwittingly miss something I should have done for them!

One thing I do know.... No way in hell I would want to do much of anything on the internet on something like this. I logged into FaunaClassifieds and just tried viewing some classified ads, and that was actually painful to do. Expanding and shrinking the screen constantly, scrolling just to read the text or view a picture CONSTANTLY is WAY too much work.

This is why we asked for Tapatalk for years!!

I think so! It makes uploading photos straight from the phone super simple. And everything is sized for the phone, so no zooming in and scrolling around.

Hey, Rich and I were at Ding Darling- wait- I'll post from Tapatalk!!

They have starfish there????

Once we found one, there were tons!!

Test: small

As we were leaving the wildlife drive, we wondered, stop to hike the last trail, or Rich suggested
go ahead to catch that snake in the road, which is probably a stick. Right as we parked, the car
leaving stopped. "I knew it!!" Rich yelled. We bailed out of the car and ran....

Ah, I should have made those smaller. Medium, the first one, was best. Actually, small is best.

Anyway, super-easy to edit posts in Tapatalk, too, but I don't know if that holds true for non-contributing members.

Rich, I know you aren't really into apps, (yet) but I thought I'd list some that I think are really good. Going in order by where they are on my phone:

Dark Sky. Warns you ahead of time when it's going to rain. When rain is stopping. Can send you a daily forecast at a set time.

Waze. A route-planning app, but with a whole community, so you know ahead of time if there are hazards along your way- weather, accidents, lanes closed, construction. It's great at picking the fastest route, avoiding traffic, etc., and gives you a choice of three routes. It has saved me countless times from huge traffic jams in Atlanta and Chattanooga.

Hurricane- a really nice hurricane info app.

Lightning Finder- there's an annual subscription, but it shows you real-time lightning strikes near you! I find it fascinating.

Deliveries is the best delivery tracking app I've found.

Spark is the best e-mail app I've found.

(For all these categories, I've tried tens of different apps for each one, and chosen the best.)

Nest lets me monitor and set my Nest thermostat from anywhere. And check the status of my smart smoke detectors.

Map My Run is a great app for running, hiking, walking. Shows you a cool map of your route, and distance, etc.

Yelp is great for finding restaurants while traveling.

There are some really great bird field guides. I use a combination of Merlin Bird ID, iBird Pro and Peterson Birds of NA.

Sky Guide gives you a map of the night sky, as you look at it. Names constellations, etc. wherever you look, at whatever angle- it matches you.

Kindle replaces physical books. Why? Space, for one thing. Portability for another. I have my whole library of books I'm currently reading, everywhere I go, on every device I own. More suited to a tablet, but still nice for a phone.

Audible. Sadly, the internet has stolen virtually all my time I spent reading. But while driving, I love listening to audiobooks.

BugMe! is like pulling out a post-it note for your phone. I use it for jotting down things like a book I want to read, dog body measurements, door codes, just anything I'd write a little note about.

Oh, SplashID is an app that saves info. About everything. Drivers license number. Bank accounts. Credit cards. Log ins. Insurance numbers. Everything. You can back it up to a computer or the cloud. I use it almost daily. Also, I worry about, what if I die? No one is going to be able to even know all the accounts I have, much less access them. SO my solution was, I have a trusted friend (not significant other, not relative) who also has this app. In his app, I created a category called Nanci's SplashID, which has my log-in info. Someone now knows how to access all my vital info if I die accidentally.

Healthy looking yellow rat snake!

When Connie and I were down in Sanibel, we found a small one crossing the road while bike riding. It was right in the Heron's Landing area where we were staying. I just skooted him off of the road so he wouldn't get run over.

I'll have to try some of them. I have looked around at the apps selection and found a few that I loaded up. Mostly utility types. Things like a wifi analyzer, that came in handy when I was setting up a new wireless router the other day. Didn't help much with a security camera system I've been playing with, however. Also some GPS trackers, and weather radar. I found an app that I had high hopes for, but it really let me down. Called "Track a Phone by Number." Sounds good in theory, but it really doesn't work at all. I figured it would be helpful with Connie driving up to Delaware to visit family if I could keep track of her progress. Or heck, maybe one of these days either Connie or I will just lose our phone, and I figured this would be great to locate it. But alas, it's not worth a plug nickle. The whole way up to Delaware, it still showed Connie's phone as being here at home. It eventually did show her as being at her sister's house in Delaware, so when I talked to her on the phone, I asked her if she was leaving her phone at her sister's house the entire time. Nope. She was carrying it around where ever she went, with it turned on, yet the tracking program just wasn't TRACKING. So I will be uninstalling this turkey pretty soon.

I guess with *free* apps you are mostly going to get what you paid for. So maybe I need to spend more time looking at the paid apps.

Honestly, I am finding Google Assistant and Bixby intriguing. Using voice commands to launch apps, or do Google searches just seems a logical way to do stuff on a smart phone. Isn't that what the "smarts" should be all about? I just want to tell the phone what I want, and it should be able to figure out how to go about doing that. Instead of pressing buttons, I can just say, "Hi Bixby. Power off." And it is done. But of course, it's not quite there yet. Close, but I can see the potential, and what it can do now is better than I had expected.

Oh gee, it's raining. I guess the drought we've been having since, well, YESTERDAY afternoon, is over with.
