A few months ago a family moved onto our street in the neighborhood. They are very nice and great people to have around. After the parents had been over to help my parents re-decorate some of the house...they found out I had snakes. They both proclaimed they hated snakes and that their daughter (13) and son (10) would be scared as well.

After my sister (13) met their daughter I brought her into my room to show her them...the parents were right, she was pretty freaked out. Then, just yesterday, the 10 year old boy came to my door and asked if I would show him the snakes. I could tell he was nervous but he touched a few and asked a lot of good adult like questions. (Not one was like "Do they get out", they were all like "So what time of year do you hibernate them").

So they best part is that they 13 year old girl called today and asked me if I would bring down some of the snakes and talk about "what I do" next Sunday when she has a girl scout meeting at her house. So I hope to get some young girls to appreciate them more! If any of them will hold the snakes I will take some pictures and let you all see. I am just in shock the parents will let me bring them there...

That's cool Dave! For the kind of girl you want, a snake ought to work much better than a puppy!

Congrats.... You have just discovered how good snakes can be for breaking the ice with the girls...
always a good thing...
MIKE

Thanks. Yes it is a good way. Now if it will only work on a girl my age! ;)

Thanks! Yea, and if it doesn't work I do have a puppy as a back up.

Turning non believers into believers. Love it.

Thanks! Now I have to see what the reactions are. I will tell you guys next week what happens.

The problem is, David, girls your age want guys a couple years older. Then they want guys a lot of years older, until suddenly those guys are old geezers and they want guys much younger. It's a fine balance- good luck!

Hey, have fun! :) One word of advice: take hand sanitizer with you -- because the kids will want to touch/hold them & it is so helpful when someone has it easily accessible!

And...my boyfriend is 6 years older than me; when he was 15, I was 9. At that age, I would have been icky to him, but now we get a laugh out of the age difference. :) So, perhaps you'll make a favorable impression on a lovely young lady at the meeting, and in a few years, she'll want to learn more about those snakes (and get a hatchling of her own!), and when you're 18 & she's 16, that age difference won't seem so awkward any longer. ;)

Yea, I am starting to see more and more of that in high school already!

Thanks! The tip on hand sanitizer is great! I will definietly bring that! Well my parents are 7 years apart and I always think how weird that would be until you were both out of school. Yea a 20 year old and a 13 yeard old...

Oh wow good luck! Its always neat to introduce new people to the hobby!

Thanks Izzi!

Have fun with that Dave! I've volunteered for my kids school but no bites yet.

Thanks! I am going to bring my best snakes so there better be no bites! :)

It is weird, but my boyfriend thinks that it's adorable that when he was frolicking in high school, I was still in elementary school. :p

Today was the big day! I had two of my friends from school go to the house with me to help. I brought three snakes: Buckeye the normal, Molly the Amel, and Christen the Amel Het Butter.

The girl scouts were totally freaked at first (except for one who obviously loves reptiles) but they got much calmer once I took one out and just talked with out even looking down at the snake on my arm. I guess they figured out that they were nice animals. Also my friends each held one as I talked about facts on corn snakes, brumation, breeding, hatchling care, adult care, feeding, sexing, and even some genetics. I also printed off pictures that I could reference and pass around during my talk. I brought the dried up eggs that the babies hatched from and some of the baby sheds.

I even brought down a pinkie mouse and an adult mouse. I brought a sample of aspen and the most important thing.......MY CAMERA!

After I talked for about 25 minutes I asked if anyone would like to hold them. About 5 out of the 10 jumped up and got in line. Eventually I got each and every girl and group leader person to touch one. I think about 7 of the 10 girls held one as well. The snakes did awesome and Molly even demonstrated how they go to the bathroom. That got everyone laughing. I took some pictures of them and I would love to share them with you all!

Also I want to offer a special thanks to...1. Christina- The hand sanatizer helped tremendously and 2. Bill and Kathy Love- Your newer book was great! I brought it and showed the girls all the different morphs and how they mated and how you sex them. There is one good picture of the two girls who were pretty nervous. They were both looking at the book and smiling! That made my day. I also want to thank everyone else on here because I have learned so much and I had enough material to talk for over 45 minutes!!!!!

Needless to say, the parents called my mom after I was finished and told her some good stuff and that they would like to have me talk to the Indian group that her boy is in. (I think thats a different name for boy scouts). So I get to do that some time in March!

So I will post some pictures but I was wondering if I had to do something to the eyes of the girls. Like black them out?
Thanks for looking and reading...

ceqninedorf would probably know, I think she protected the identities of her classroom children in pictures
