Week in review: 26th Feb 08 - 3rd March 08

Thats being a little obvious... If you have a problem with the way I write the WIR perhaps you should talk to me about it.

Touchy are we, when was the last time you were supposed to write WIR.
You call it quality I call it bias we each have an opinion, both right both wrong. I don't have to like everyone on this forum and neither do you.

No, not touchy, just perfectly aware of what and who you were talking about. I missed my last turn, I don't particuarly want to do the WIR these days. Accusations of bias and unappreciative readers put me off, not to mention I am increasingly bored of the backstabbing and bitching that has become so abundant. I'm almost at my breaking point Susan, and you are not helping.

Don't go in a huff because I have never chosen your pictures. Theres many people I have never included in the review that I am great friends with and many people I HAVE included despite not knowing a thing about them. I have a bias towards quality photographs and not the people who take them.

This is a forum for hobbiest's with some great professionals in the mix. I don't think being a professional photographer would be a requirement, obviously you do, and that is your perogative.

I would just like to be able to see the actual snake in question when chosing pictures, not blurry mystery morphs. I do not require anyone be a professional photographer, it's not about that. I like colour, composition and clarity which can be achieved through any camera in the world, not just kitted out expensive SLR's.

There have been pictures in other peoples WIR's I have disliked and not chosen myself, just like there are pictures and topics I chose that people will not like. Every WIR writer has a different stance and will do the job in entirley different ways.

You seem to be taking this far too seriously, this is when the fun disappears when people do thankless jobs.

Toyah, I am truly sorry. My intention was not to see your WIR get sidetracked. But I must say this.
Elle I can only speak for myself. But the one time you picked a picture of mine you had to add that you edited it because of the photo quality. Not that you should be required to care one way or the other how that made me feel but it did hurt a little. I have a new camera that is a little better since then. It's just not everybody can afford a lot of photography equipment or is as dedicated to photography as you are. But that doesn't mean we are not enthusiastic about our new snakes or feel a desire to share our pictures. I know I have personally been taking fewer pictures of my snakes and posting less pictures because every time I post a thread in photo gallery there are only a few replies, but with some other members it quickly goes to 2 pages. And with the political crap going on this forum I know there are people who probably can't stand me just because of my views. It does make me feel like why do I even bother. I'm not saying this backstabbing you. I am bitching, yes but I am telling you directly.

I'm glad you all liked my WIR, and that it inspired such feeling! Can't wait to do the next one :dancer: I vote that this thread should be in the "hot topics" section for next week's WIR...

Elle, if you don't want to do the WIR ... then quit, and someone else can do it instead. Life's too short to be doing things you don't want to do.

Jenn, I am truley sorry for hurting your feelings. I was utterly insenstive in that WIR and I understand how you feel.

I do not expect pro quality photographs. Heck, I have only had my SLR since October and before then I was taking photographs that I look back on now and laugh at. The point is I am brutal with my own photographs which translates into the WIR. I am sorry if people feel they are being left out.

I know how enthusiastic we are all about snakes, thats why we are here. It's not about how many views our threads get or how many replys. We have better things to do than worry about that. I feel I post far too many pictures, I don't care. Thats my other hobby and passion which I like to share. If people don't want to look, they are not forced too...

I won't be quiting. I will continue to do this job, although I feel slightly negative towards it. I think now my feelings about it are out I will feel far more comfortable about doing it. I'll get my butt in gear, stop procrastinating and start being slightly less "bias" towards photography quality and content.

This was NEVER meant to be a popularity contest which I feel some think it is...

You said a mouthful there! ;)

So does your statement Dean.

Perhaps yeah.. which is why I am no longer enthusiastic about the WIR.

Perhaps Susan should go back to writing it to ensure her needs are being met RE the WIR.
I backed out for two reasons Elle because I chose to not be associated with people who don't keep their end of the bargain and because I was having surgery. My needs would not be met by me doing WIR. I gave you your opinion now give me mine, we just have different ideas as simple as that.

Personally, I think that WIR photos SHOULD have standards. I'm not saying that I want to see all photos that are masterpieces, but I do want to see clarity in the shot, a certain amount of color balance, and some thought in the composition.

The only bias I've seen in the WIR is completely appropriate - bias towards good photography. I also think that the thread picks have been pretty good. The threads I see are usually unique, high-volume, or otherwise enlightening. Since the WIR is a member-sanctioned thing, the writer may choose the content (as I see it, anyways).

Remember, everyone here posted photos BEFORE there was a WIR, so not being mentioned in it should not be a reason to stop. Contact the writer via PM to discuss any bias, or choose not to read it. :shrugs:

Personally, I like the WIR having different authors because of the different slant to each edition. The same as having 3 moderators on this site. Different personalities shine through. Even when I'm participating in the more controversial threads, I like the snapshots of our different takes on life. That such a diverse group can ever agree at all is amazing, all that really connects us is that we found this site!
As far as whether a WIR is photo-heavy, includes birthdays, new aquisitions, new morphs or whatever, I'd never critisise someone giving up their own time for the benefit of the site, unless they only posted about their own snakes!

Establishing standards is not the answer, please remember that people who do the WIR are taking time out of their busy lives to comb through a butt-load of threads and photos. I completely agree with your statement that if you don't like it, don't read it. Period.

Good Point.

Personally, I think that if you have a problem with the WIR (Inlcuding it being late or a skipped week) you should simply stop reading it. Having done one, yes only one :D it's work and those that do it volunteer. Enjoy it, but if you don't then by all means, volunteer. But for heaven sakes, don't complain about it. It's petty and rather unkind.

Just my opinion.

At this point since I have already apologised to Toyah all I can do is also apologise to Elle. I am not going to say one more word about this I don't care if I never make a WIR or have one reply to my posts it isn't about being popular on an internet forum it is about snakes and learning. I know this will sound lame, but yesterday there was another thread that was upsetting for me and I kind of let my feelings about it seep over to here and I am sorry. I realize what an ingrate I seemed like and this was really a wake up call for me as well. So I'm hoping we can let this go and go back to actually talking about this thread. I had actually missed a couple of the threads on here and Toyah did an excellent job.

I think you misunderstood me a tiny bit, Tonya. When I read it again, I realized it might not have been worded the best way. When I said that photo picks should have certain standards, I do not mean a written list voted on by members or ANYTHING of the sort. What I meant is that each WIR author has certain things that they believe warrant a photos place in the WIR, and certain things which make photos not fitting for the position.

For instance, at least one of the WIR writers likes to pick photos because of their artistic quality. Another likes to include at least one funny and/or cute photo every week. These are their own individual set of standards, which lends some great variety to the WIR.

You're right :) I read it differently.... and now? I completely agree with you...hehe.

Thanks for pointing that out...
