Hey everyone

I thought I'd post a thread for all you metal/rock enthusiasts (or not, it doesn't matter :)) to decide on who you think are the greatest metal bands are. Due to the limited amount of poll options, I'm only going to post my top 6, so then hopefully you can vote on who you think is the best out of those. However, it'll be great to discuss on who you think SHOULD be in the list, and why.

All the best

David

Cool Jim, I like KJ. Why do you feel they should be up there? Because of who they influenced? Or perhaps their unique playing style?

Mine too Jen :D

You've gotta love Dance of Death. Oh and having a snake around that statue makes the picture all the sweeter. Why do you like them?

"Let me tell you a story to chill the bones..."
(I like that song too.)
I think my favorite album from them is Piece of Mind though.
Why do I like them? Because they rock and always have. Their new stuff is still good and yet I remember rocking out to "Number of the Beast" like 20 years ago too.
If I had to add anything to your list, I'd put Anthrax up there as well.

Out of those selections, I've gotta go with Sabbath. :dgrin: I like the line-up with Ozzy best, but I don't usually think of that line-up as heavy metal exactly. The "Born Again" album with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple is undeniably heavy metal, and I love that album.

Some people classify Led Zeppelin as heavy metal. I don't, but if they were on the list, I'd have to have gone with them. They're the best, period. (IMHO, of course).
:smash: <---- (Hammer of the Gods)

"About a thing that I saw..."

My favourite album is either Seventh Son of a Seventh Son or Powerslave. Dance of Death ranks pretty highly too.

Anthrax are awesome, but I wanted a representative from each sub-genre, and Slayer was my one from thrash. :)

Every time I hear 'Hammer of the Gods' now, all I can think back to is Jack Black doing it on School of Rock, lol.

'Don't tell me you've never gotten the Led out'

Sabbath are awesome, and out of those options, it was a tough one between Sabbath and Maiden, then Metallica would probably be next. That's the reason why I didn't include both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, because most of their work is rock/hard rock, and not metal IMO.

I saw Maiden in '85 on their Power Slave Tour. They were fantastic! I grew up when Metal ruled and they still stand:devil01: out above the rest.

Out of that list, my hands down favorite goes to Priest. I literally can not pick a best album by them, because they're all incredible. Even their synth experimentation on Turbo worked for me. They have some of the most inspiring rock anthems ever written.

Maiden comes close, but I think Priest was more metal. Maiden was more about stories and tales, whereas Priest just captured everything rock/metal was all about.

I love early Metallica, but I think they got WAAAYYY too full of themselves and fame went to their heads. That's definitely not metal or what they were about before they got big.

Slayer, to me, is just a gimmick band. Musically, I never thought they were much different then all the other thrash bands, so they used the whole satanic thing as a gimmick to stand out. I would pick Anthrax or Megadeth (or even Overkill) over Slayer, but again, that's just me.

Sabbath was definitely a major influence and helped to shape what rock/metal became, but I'm not quite that old, lol.

And finally, Kiss is good fun rock n' roll, and I do like them, but I don't think they deserve as much credit as they get. They were average musicians at best, but they knew how to make a show out of everything.

Maiden stories and tales...

well yes, but historic, true tales and stories. Never been a fan of Priest. Nothing against them, but.... I was listening to BOC, Qeensryche, Savatage, Fates Warning, Metal Church, etc, etc. Go back a little bit furhter, UFO, Uriah Heep...
Never was really into what would be considered "mainsteam" metal.

Out of that lineup.............Judas Priest most definitely. The vocals of Rob Halford combined with the dual guitar work of Glenn Tipton/KK Dowing, priceless. Second would be Black Sabbath with Dio on vocals, great stuff.

Ironically, they are about to start a tour as Heaven and Hell, along with Judas Priest, Motorhead and Testament. Don't care for the latter two......but to see JP and Dio's Sabbath in one show would be pretty killer. Anyway, there's what my vote would be, if it had to be from the above listed bands only.

Yep, it call comes down to what experience you want to get out of the music. That's why you can never really crown any band and these types of discussions will live on forever. Music is very much a personal experience, at the heart of it.

My eyes are peeled for this show as well. They're tentatively scheduled to play at Jones Beach out here in August (big summer concert tradition right on the beach, it's a friggin awesome place for a show) so just waiting for it to be official so I can get me some tickets.

In flames, And Soilwork... get my vote, love them.. very good music..

out of that lineup I have to pick metallica.. grew up on them.

wait a second, I don't see Dethklok up there.

No, I'm not even kidding. I'm starting to like metal because of Dethklok.
