An interesting outside perspective of the USA.

While it's touching he thinks so highly America, it kind of does sound like he's seeing it all through rose coloured glasses. I can't say I have a well rounded opinion either, since I've only every lived in Canada (and I love it!), I do read some really sad posts by my friends in the states not getting the medical attention they need because they can't afford it. I read once medicare was a communist ideal...

Also, what about Canada? We're pretty clean and sane too, and our dog is plenty big. Woof.

I have never outright stated "my Army is better," I just registered my disagreement that it might be 'second' to any other. It's not, and I'll never be sorry for it either. Anyone who's as proud of his Army as I am of mine will understand and certainly not take offense.. Some people think the Lakers are unbeatable, lol.

But if you really want me to comment on the OP, I think two things at once: 1. Thanks for the kind words! 2. The slippery slope towards communism argument is sooooo old and needs to be put to rest.

I understand Tom, and no offence was taken, just 'making conversation' is all, LOL. I'm very proud of my Army, and it's one of the reasons why I'm going to join up as an infantry/RAC officer (but I'll get my degree through the Army) :)

Although I like A LOT of things about this country, there are A LOT of things I would change if I could, lol! But I think that is true of any country that I am aware of. If there is really a "perfect place" out there, I am ready to move to it!

I think it is interesting to see how people think about places they have never actually visited. When my Russian sister-in-law and her teenage daughter arrived (back in 1998), they are were totally awed just by going to the grocery store and seeing all of the choices. But when we had both car and computer problems that were driving us crazy in the same week, she very seriously said "I didn't think those kinds of problems happened in America - I thought everything always worked perfectly here!"

We also hosted quite a few foreign exchange students in the '90s. It is really great to see your own culture through the eyes of others. It makes you much more aware of both the good and bad things that you just take for granted as "the way it is".

Or province recently changed our motto to "the best place on earth!", and there was a A LOT of complaints. Mostly, people felt it was very egotistical, never mind the fact it *isn't* the best place on earth to most of us. For me, it's my Grammys cottage in Nova Scotia.
 
I think the point the man was trying to make is not that America is the only free country or the best country, but that America will consistenly argue that freedom is the right way and only way. One thing is a fact in this country, if enough people don't like the way something is, it will change. That can't be said everywhere in the world.
