Sol is gone...

OK, I getcha :)

I had intended to sell BRenda after next season even before I got her. I don't have enough room for the projects I want to do as it is. But its going to be very difficult!

Ha! You might be surprised. I've broken down tank after tank after tank with the dream of filling them all back up with snakes next time. I've enjoyed breeding fish, now my interests are taking me in new directions. Snake care is infinitely easier than fish care.

LOL what you don't enjoy filling up 5 gallon buckets and doing water changes ever weekend?

Seriously! That's part of what has attracted me to reptiles. Weekly maintenance on my 120g aquarium is over two hours, and that's WITH the python water changer hooked up to the sink :(

Their energy (electrical) consumption is less too.

And the best part, you won't hurt them just by touching them :)

Nothing wrong with that decision in my opinion.
Fast and easy. Better for the snake, better for the owner. Why beat around the bush with a snake you know you don't want to keep?
I have a few now that I know I won't keep forever. I have a collection in these snakes after all, not a family. They will not miss me when they are gone. I will try my best to find them good homes, but if I were in the very early stages where a return is possible, what's the difference?

I can see the other side too, we all like our snakes a lot, and in caring for them we develop feelings for them, but I think the idea that you have to spend 20 years with every snake you buy is a little overzealous. Would this hobby be very possible if we all felt that way?

I agree with you Tom e, there are just different styles of keeping herps. Either as family pet style, or as a hobbyist/collector/enthusiast, where trading, selling, buying is part of the fun.

The two are not in opposition, just different, and neither is better than the other because the animals are well cared for in both situations.

Oh I know! Between the heaters and the filters and the water expense, it's crazy! Then the cutting up veggies, thawing frozen worms, maintaining live worm cultures, ferts for the plants....it's very time/work intensive. I've only got four snakes, so my work is nothing like most of the folks here, but it's been so nice to be able to enjoy the hobby without the massive workload it takes to maintain them. I use a python on my larger tanks, but my smaller ones in the fish rooms involve carrying buckets like Trixter mentioned. Bleh. I'm done.

But back to topic, IMO I have to agree with Tom and the others. Get what you want and consider carefully. If you breed them and want to move on to other types, I see absolutely nothing wrong with passing them along to other hobbyists. JMHO for what it's worth, and it ain't much, but best of luck at the reptile show. Maybe Chris (tyflier) can help you pick out something really awesome!

Yeah that would be cool! :)

Starsevol recommended a fire stripe, I think she said it was an amel blood red stripe.

I know their color and pattern develops as they grow, so I'm currently trying to find pics of adults vs. hatchlings so that I know what to expect when Im at the show.

I know what a blizzard looks like anyways :)

Cohazard, go to the search engine and type in kismet. I'm not 100% sure he is a fire, but he sure looks like one! He will be test bred next season so I will know for sure!

I have to say I'm impressed by so many people here. I read this thread from start to finish and figured it would fall apart, but even on such an emotional and controversial topic it didn't become much more than a heated debate in areas. :D That to me is very impressive, especially since I've been on forums and part of online communities were the slightest disagreement between members would start an epic flame war. It's very refreshing to be part of a group that isn't like that! *hugs*

Okay, now to get back on topic:

I'm really torn about the issue of buying/selling/trading cornsnakes as a hobby or because it doesn't turn out the way you would like for it to. However, sometimes things just don't work out, the animal doesn't fit you and you need to try something else. I've worked a lot with dogs and experienced this. For the longest time I had wanted a pug and when I finally got one she and I didn't click. Eventually she was given to my niece and it turned out to be a perfect match.

I know snakes are different than a dog, as many have said, they don't become attached to their owners. But I know for ME personally, I tend to become attached to whatever pet/animal comes into my home. I would like to start breeding snakes as a hobby, but nothing more than two or three pairs. When I made this decision, I started hunting for a male and realized that just about anything I paired with Mali (she's an Anery) was not likely to produce anything of 'interest' in the first generation. I debated selling her or trading her, but in the end decided that Mali would not be used for breeding at all and that I would purchase a pair of snakes for breeding purposes.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this sort of thing is for each individual to decide what is right and wrong. One person may be comfortable with it and feel it is necessary, whereas another may not. :shrugs:

The reason I don't have fish...

The OP bought his original snake, returned it, and bought another species of snake, but in the last few days I have seen his posts in the corn snakes for sale area wanting to purchase another. I have some concerns regarding his intentions, but I think his original intentions may have changed due to lurking the posts here at CS.com. I know my original intentions were for pets, but now I think maybe, perhaps at one point I may breed. But I have better impulse control (though I tell you it's fading fast). I am constantly forcing myself to close the posts before I start pming left and right myself.:D

Interesting thread...

I think you did what was right for you. It might not be right for some of the posters in this thread, but it doesn't really matter does it? After all, it wasn't a rescue that didn't tickle your fancy, so you dumped it.

I think that we bring snakes into our life for our enjoyment, and if you made a hasty call in purchasing something that you wouldent be happy owning for a looong long time, then letting it grow with someone who WILL enjoy it was the right thing to do.

Keeping an animal that you don't want isn't fair to you or the animal, and we all make mistakes.

I think you're right, originally I only wanted one pet snake, but after browsing some general herp sites and seeing an MBK for the first time at my LHS, I realized I would enjoy having more than one snake.

My intentions are to keep four snakes, a solid white one (blizzard corn), a solid black one (MBK), an orange one (striped fire corn), and my BP.

I do have some long term goals that include breeding bp's and corns, but for now, I'm content just enjoying the basic husbandry care, after all I've only been keeping snakes for 2 weeks to the day :)

Look for the first cohazard pipes in '10'
