Trader's question?

OK, It's pretty much SOP ( standard operating procedure) that when animals are traded the person who initiated the trade ships first.

Now the question:

If you specifically put in your ad that you accept trades or ask for a specific animal in trade are you or are you not initiating a trade?

I think the answer is pretty obvious, but I'd like to get some feedback before I state my position.

I agree, stating that you'll accept trades, and for what, doesn't make you the initiator, it's the person offering the thing they are willing to trade. I would also point out that the person that has the animal for sale or trade wouldn't ship unless he/she was paid first, so why would they send the animal before the one being traded was shipped?

Interesting question. I've never traded snakes, but I trade a LOT of fish. I recently answered an ad for someone selling a particular type of shrimp and they said "I'm willing to trade. Make me an offer." So I did and he accepted. I'd never send him something with the expectation that he'd accept without communicating this first, though. I guess I didn't realize there was a "you go first" rule either. Hmmm....

Here's my take on it... Hypothetical situation: you have a snake I want but I don't have money. In your ad you say you accept trades. Because I don't have money but I do have a snake you would trade for, I need to contact you to see if the trade is acceptable and then send you my snake first before I receive yours.

How about this definition from Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry:
1ini·ti·ate
Pronunciation:
\i-ˈni-shē-ˌāt\
Function:
transitive verb
Inflected Form(s):
ini·ti·at·ed; ini·ti·at·ing

1 : to cause or facilitate the beginning of : set going <initiate a program of reform> <enzymes that initiate fermentation>

The way I see it is:

If I'm standing in the middle of a room of herpers and I say:

"Who wants to trade this cornsnake for a kingsnake?"

and a guy says "sure I'll trade"

Who initiated the trade?

How is that any different from putting it into an ad and having someone respond?

It would be different if I contacted a breeder that did not advertise trades and asked for a trade because I'm the guy saying: "Would you trade x for y".

I understand it may not work that way, but putting it simply the first one to say "trade" is initiating
to cause or facilitate the beginning of
the trade.

If you were in a room. Then it is a matter of swapping. Now If I stand in a room and said I have blah and i would like blah blah... Someone responds hey me other here. I have blah blah but its not here. Then I would Have to see it first. Why . I would like to see it & examine it. For what i traits I am after also NO BUGS. I would like to have faith in people. But that is not in my nature. So you would have to send me the blah blah First. Before i let you have my Blah.
This would Also be true. If after the swap someone emailed, Pmed, Called me, Sent by Pigeon, Don't matter how they contacted me. After the show/swap/gathering. They thought about your announcement. And said you know i should have done that. But that is my take on it.

Here is my take....a Canadian twist on things LOL. If you responded to an ad for a snake, and the ad stated "willing to trade" or "trades considered", and you responded to that ad with something to trade, and the person placing the ad accepts what you have to offer in trade, then I believe you are obligated to ship first, because your trade would be considered payment for the snake you saw advertised. That's my take on things.

If you specifically put in your ad that you accept trades or ask for a specific animal in trade are you or are you not initiating a trade?

When i see that in someones classified, it only offers an alternative payment method to cash.

I would have to agree. You're sending a trade item as payment for something in the sellers ad.
