I know most of the books also say 86, but after seeing the results of thermal scans, where the snake's body was actually reaching temps of 90 when the heat was at 86, I dropped it down to 82. I've seen a marked difference in activity and feeding response. They all spend more time crawling around and they eat better. I feed rather infrequently though so it's probably also a factor as well. They still spend much of their time on the cool side, so I don't think they really prefer the high temps. The only time they spend any consistant time on the warm side, is at shed time.
