Misting

My corn eyes are cloudy for the first time with me.

I want to be extra safe. I have a mister. Do I mist just the snake? a few squirts? or do I mist everywhere in the tank?

I just don't want to do too much or too little.

Thanks.

You should be fine just misting a few squirts all around the tank. Misting the snake itself isn't really necessary...

...and just to add breadth of experience (and the usual amount of confusion!) - I never mist.

I cover the top, loosely, with plastic wrap- just lay it on the screen, and mist the whole tank lightly. It helps if you have a bunch of vines with leaves to hold the moisture.

If your humidity level is OK then you don't need to mist. I struggle with the humidity level so when Cyrus goes blue I start to mist him and the Viv. Hope this helps!

Just give him a bath if anything, misting can be dangerous, also take in consideration what substrate you are using.

Misting creates raised humidity levels, which can encourage bacterial growth and lead to problems like scale rot (that's the worst-case scenario, but it's a risk). This can be made worse if your substrate is good at holding moisture.

Personally, I'd see bathing as a last resort, to deal with a problem rather than as a preventative. Some Corns find it very stressful.

Why not just put a humid hide in with him? That way he can use it if he needs to, and you don't have a potential humidity problem in the entire tank.

My case is pretty confusing too. First shed with me, I didn't mist, everything went well. Second shed, same thing. Third shed, 3 peices, and a bit left on the tip of the tail... oops! I took it off gently and misted the tank for the next shed. Everything went well. My guess is, it got pretty dry in my appartment because of winter coming and the electric heat starting to heat my appartment. Since I'm using a 33 gal aquarium with one of those black tops with two doors, the aquarium's humidity level is pretty much the same as my appart, even with the water bowl on the undertank heatpad (which is glued UNDER the glass, yes!). So I'm now misting my snake when in blue during winter from now on! Hope that helps!

One of mine had a bad shed, so I always mist her viv daily when she's blue. I also put a towel over the ventilation area of the viv. The others get misted occasionally in blue, with occasional towels. :D A moist hide during the blue phase leaves the choice up to the snake.

How much humidity is too much? It's really kind of a common sense issue. Just give the viv a few (emphasis on FEW) passes with the old mister/sprayer bottle. In half and hour, put your hand on the substrate. There should only be a very slight dampness detectable to your touch, if any. If your substrate feels wet, you were too enthusiastic in your misting.

I view light misting in blue kind of like my multivitamin with breakfast. In a perfect world, it's irrelevant. It is insurance for when conditions are less than perfect. In a reasonable amount, it can't hurt and may help.

I tried putting damp paper towels in a gladware, and i put him in it, and he stayed for like ten seconds and left..

I know that doesnt necessarily mean he didn't like it but i got worried..

What substrate do you use?
I use coconut husk and some clumps of dry beaked moss for him to hide in. They are both very absorbent substrates. I usually squirt a small amount of water on the moss on the warm side once a day while he's in the blue phase to help him out.
A small, shallow bowl of water on the warm side of his tank will also help with humidity, and he may even choose to take a bath.

to raise the humidity level in the cage you can also put a bowl of water under or above the heatsource it works with me. if it does'nt work take a bigger one. to much mist can cause bacterial problems.

Is it okay to put a full sized corn in a huge tank? Dimensions of maybe five feet by three by three? How about a yearling in a 30 gallon? Why are these things bad, if they are?

i am brand new (2 weeks). I have a humid hide where the humidity is about 70%. The rest of the tank is between 20 and 30%. My 5 month old just had a perfect shed. She hangs out in the humidor about half the time and the dry hides half the time. I found her shed in the vines. So my thinking right now is my humidity all around is working. All agree?
