WalMart Aspen?

sacrifice.theory

is officially addicted.
At the local Wally World, they have some aspen substrate that looks.. okay.
It's 3 bucks for a 10 quart bag, what can you expect?
Anyways, I think it's called Ameri-Pet or something.
Anybody ever use it?
That 4 dollar 4 quart bag, with 5 dollar shipping really gets ya. :sobstory:

My guess is it would be okay as long as you microwaved it to get rid of all the fun little buggies that are probably living in it.

I get my aspen from Wal-mart (Alfapet is the brand). It's a lot cheaper there than at the local petstores and I've never had a problem with it.

Petsmart

I get huge 2 cubic ft. bags (expands to 4 cubic ft.) of Aspen at Petsmart for $13 (Kaytee brand). Those huge bags help when you have lots of snakes. That's the best price I've found anywhere on Aspen.

I get aspen whereever I can find a deal. I've used most of the brands from the chain stores with no problem. Now that it's winter, I leave the bags outside so any nasties can die that might be in there, but I've not really had a problem with that either.

I tend to pick mine up wherever I find it first, but I've picked up stuff from Wal-Mart and also never had any problems with it.

Yeah, I get mine where the good deals are, also. Before reading this thread it never even occured to me to consider critters that might come as an unwanted "free gift with purchase." I've bought a lot of bags of various substrate over the years, what with all the assorted animals from horses to mice. I haven't had a problem before, but now I have something new to worry about......:uhoh:

I could try putting it outside, but it's currently in the 70's and humid as well. Maybe I could breed a whole new brand of pest! :) Lori, I envy you the wintertime! Throw a snowball for me.

I wouldn't be overly worried about bugs in the stuff you get from Wal-Mart. If there are any, the cahnce they can feed on your snakes is very, very slim. The rumors that snake mites, etc. live in wood waiting for a snake to find them are greatly exaggerated....lol. YEARS ago, I used it a couple of times when I ran out of substrate for snakes in cups at herp shows. (This was years before things like compressed paper substrates.) I'd run to Wal-Mart and get those small bags. It was find. SUPER, SUPER dusty, though. It was so dusty that I would have been concerned about keeping snakes on it LONG TERM. If what you get is not too dusty, it should be safe to use. The dust also killed my allergies. :(

Brrrrr...Caryl, it's a balmy 22F here right now. No snow, but I'll toss some icicles for ya! You need to come back up here to visit! ;) Do you still have family here?

I know what you mean about the new worries. I thought I had mites a while back, but the wonderful Snake Dave figured out that it was stuff from my repti-vines that was dropping into the water bowl. That's when I learned about all the potential critters that could come in the aspen. I started freezing it after that, just in case. Winter makes it a bit easer. I just keep it in my fish closet in the garage. I HAVE gotten major gnat infestations from those eco-earth bricks, tho...the kind you add water and they expand. Those always go directly into the microwave before use.

I used to get the walmart aspen...I never hada problem with it. I recently found out that petstores have aspen in two places the reptile aisle (where it ridiculously priced) and in the bird/rodent section where u can get a huge bag kaytee brand for 8-12 dollars.

I have some cousins and a few assorted in-laws in southernmost Indiana. i DO need to come for a visit. Maybe a permanent visit, as far as I'm concerned - but my husband objects to the "balmy" sort of temps you mentioned! :nope:

AlfaPet! Yes! I couldn't remember.
It doesn't look too dusty in the bag, but it also doesn't look as finely cut as some do.
But, if some of you guys use it with no problems I'm going to go ahead and pick me up some.
And, Indiana must be the family capital of the US. I also have family around Indianapolis. :p

Thanks Redarndt! I've been looking for a better deal than Walmart!!

Welcome to the forum!

Just be very careful when you pick something up from a farm store... they tend to use pine. I love the smell of pine in a stall... doesn't do so well in a snake's home... sigh.... got tons of the pine stuff around the barn.

Wally World Aspen is fine, but you do get a better deal with a BIG bag from petsmart. I've been using a big bag from Tractor supply co. It's been good clean chips!

Unfortunately, no PetSmart, Petco, or any chain pet stores for that matter.
But! There is a nice big WalMart and Tractor Supply about 25 miles north, so I'll have to check the Tractor Supply out. :D
I'm not kidding when I say I live in the middle of nowhere. :p
