Despite ShipYourReptiles.com being UPS approved, they sent my box back to me! I was shipping out my hypo boa (yeah, I did decide to get rid of him.. I'm making room for a big female breeder ball python, plus Kaden is just pure evil I'm convinced.) but my mom made the mistake of informing the UPS guy picking up my box that there was a live snake in there.

First they didnt pick up until three hours after the latest time I had it scheduled for, then they bring the box back.. thankfully the person I'm shipping to is understanding and said they are ok with waiting until I can get this straightened out.

I'm just all-around PO'd at UPS... I emailed ShipYourReptiles.com, asking how to fix this or if I can just get a refund.

Wow! We are all going to be anxious to see how this gets fixed. You need to get a refund and free shipping of this package, remind them that THEY are holding up the delivery of a promised shipment.

We all need to know if things like this so we can figure out if SYR.com is right for us.

There have been a few reports on Fauna about this happening elsewhere.
I realise this is just growing pains, and some of us had this happen with Fed Ex as well but, with Fed Ex a call to the animal desk or our sales rep got it moving pretty quickly without having to delay shipping.

I was at work when the box was returned or I would have tried to explain to the UPS person what exactly was going on. I dont really know who to call, since I just went through SYR.com, but I'm assuming I could call them and they would have tried to sort it out? I'm not really sure.

Well SYR.com issued me a full refund and apologized for the inconvenience. I realize they cant control what individual UPS locations do, and they told me that UPS has said they will not sent out a notice to all stations/employees about a relatively small company that is approved to ship snakes. So my local UPS not knowing isnt the fault of SYR.com.

So now how are you supposed to ship the snake?? And you're SO lucky he didn't get all tied up in red tape- that he actually made it back home ok.

I have no idea!! :(

I'm going to see if I can contact my local UPS and talk to them, maybe direct them to SYR.com and get this straightened out. Otherwise, I dont know what to do.

Legally she has to label it with the common name and latin name, but I _believe_ that just needs to be on a shipping bill easily accessible if they open the box, and on the outside it only has to say live harmless reptile. At least that's what I got from the huge discussion we just had here, but I don't remember what the thread was called.

That was on the inside but they didnt open it. I had the outside labeled Perishable and Live Harmless Reptile. But as soon as it got to the UPS station they turned it around and sent it back.

I sent an email to UPS telling them of what happened, and asking if they were familiar with SYR.com. Hopefully someone will get back to me on that and I can get this straightened out.

Requoting since you edited I think.

Yes, I'm VERY glad the box was returned, despite my frustration. Its much better for my nerves if the snake is still here and on a heat pad with some water etc.. instead of stuck in a box while his heat pack runs out.

for years my brother in law just sent it as a normal package with this side up marks on it and fragile on it to. He never got caught, but of course, he used Fed-Ex. Most herpers I know localy say that UPS is the most anti-reptile shipping company there is, save the US postal service. If i were you, just get the kit that SYR sells, or get your own stuff, and use fed-ex. If you are willing to spend $50 to get Fed-Ex certified, you wouldn't even have problem with there policy. But to ship normal stuff all you have to do is get Fed-Ex registered, and thats free. I mostly just posted because I want to keep up to date on this issue. ;)

Thanks, I have shipped once before with FedEx, but was going through SYR.com. Which SEEMED easy enough, but I didnt take into account that maybe my local people didnt know. :headbang:

I don't know that I will ever trust UPS to ship reptiles. I have had too many problems with them in the past shipping regular goods. They dump packages off that are supposed to be signed for by an adult, and are clearly marked to get a signature of someone 21 or over. Years ago there was a driver at Christmas time that couldn't make his deliveries on time and was thowing what was left in his truck into a dumpster behind some apartments to make it look like he had finished his route on time. I wouldn't touch UPS with a ten foot pole, especially since there is another company in the middle. Too many chances for comminucation errors, IMHO.

I have to agree with this.
On Tuesday I shipped a snake through FedEx for the first time. I was terrified! The ladies there had no clue what I was trying to do, and kept giving me the "fish-eye" LOL. One had NEVER handled a live animal shipment before, and the other had handled exactly 1...yes 1...in 18 years!!! They spent a half hour trying to get ahold of the live animal desk, and my rep, and ended up having to leave messages instead of talking to a real person. I did not feel good as I walked back to my car. I wanted to cry. The snake I sent off is a favorite, off on a breeding loan. I felt like I had abandoned him.

I followed his progress from Rhode Island to Texas, and he made it wonderfully on-time, alert and healthy. The shipping bill also came out to less than I was expecting. Even with the glitch at the start, everything was handled VERY well. Right now, I think I'm pretty much sold on FedEx. And I know that next time will be MUCH easier!

And...I got a message from Matthew that my boy has mated successfully today. He's gonna be a father! I haven't stopped smiling yet!

I actually love UPS and hate FEDEX, but I know it all depends on personal experiences. UPS has always been on time and handles my packages well for 7 years now. My boxes say live harmless reptile right on them and they always take special care for me keeping them at the counter until the last minute so they don't get too cold or hot. I hope your next experience goes better, but since they have a trict no snake shipping rule you can't be surprised it sounds like SYR dropped the ball a little.
