That really sucks... I wish they would have taken better action. I was really hoping they'd pull through and offer a better shipping solution. It seems to me that they haven't.

Guess I'll have to pick back up on getting FedEx certified. :shrugs:

We most certainly DID take care of the situation.

We are out of pocket $275+ for this singular instance. I insisted that we refund every associated expense with this one unfortunate circumstance. We overnighted new shipping materials to the customer, they arrived last Friday morning at 9am. All at our own expense. A check was also sent on Monday that covered every penny plus that the customer was out.

We have provided as much email and phone support as possible. Literally hours and hours of attention to this shipment and customer. But the actual customer is not a participant in this thread, nor the one on the BOI, so perhaps you are not getting a first hand account. I can offer a first hand account from SYR.

In the meantime, we have shipped 2000+ packages in just under 6 weeks, and we have a success and satisfaction level of well over 99%.

So Robyn, what caused this unfortunate incident, and what will be done to prevent a similar occurance in the future?

Robyn, please stop patting yourself on the back about the successful shipments that have been made with SYR and respond to the direct questions asked on the BOI thread. This thread really doesn't belong here in the first place (I should have never added to it, venting my frustrations in the first place), but on the BOI.

TMoons, you are working hard to portray our shipping as a "hit or miss" situation, and that is not only completely untrue, but also unfair.

Hi Nanci- UPS Stores are independent franchises, and reserve the right to refuse any package for whatever reason. You can't "make" them accept anything. The vast majority are super cool, and happy to have your business. You can also drop off your package at MANY other locations. If one does not want to accept live animals, try another.

Many businesses have daily pickup and deliveries. If you have, or can create, a friendly relationship with one, it can be very convenient to leave your prepaid package with their outgoing packages for driver pickup. You can also schedule a driver pickup from your home or office, another easy solution.

Most Vet Clinics have daily pickup and delivery, at a set time every day. Extremely predictable, and a very simple and smooth solution. Grocery stores also have daily pickups and deliveries. Your SYR package is prepaid, professionally labeled, and ready to go, there are lots of convenient ways to get it on the way.

As for this package in particular, I don't know the first hand specifics of what was said at drop off, but a UPS employee was given the impression that the package contained DANGEROUS items. That employee then issued a directive to the local hub that a possible dangerous package could be coming through, and to be on alert. It did come through, and was pulled.

Of course, it wasn't a dangerous item at all, but "dangerous" was indeed the term used in the communication to watch for this package.

I don't know what kind of impression that person had, whether they thought it was dynamite, cobras (we absolutely do not ship ANY venomous reptiles!), or toxic apple pie, but a red flag was raised, and the package pulled. Unfortunate, and a definite inconvenience, but very much an exception, not the rule, or typical experience, at all.

Robyn, I have said numerous times I hope this works out and solution can be provided...I even provided several suggestions. I have also specified numerous times that reptiles of the legged variety should have no problems with this service as it is within UPS guidelines and encouraged the use of SYR for them.

What's unfair is that you are ignoring very serious, very important questions on the BOI. Why will you take the time to respond here but leave the questions on the BOI unanswered?

Speaking of completely untrue, why did you claim that I said something I didn't regarding labeling?

So if you take a package of snakes to the UPS hub, do they have the right to refuse it?

Does SYR have a written waiver that permits SYR to ship snakes?

Thank you.

Does SYR have a written waiver that permits SYR to ship snakes?

I know of MANY people that are waiting for proof of this fact following this fiasco. Many of us DO want to know if you have proof of a waiver.
KJ

I sent a pointed questior or two direct to UPS with a link to the BOI thread. They are supposed to respond within a day and if they do I will post their answer here.

There's a lot of double talk going around, I personally think that herp lovers who ship their snakes are entitled to clearly know of the risks involved.

A shipping company called Ship Your Reptiles is saying that they have an 'understanding' with you and that they are permitted to ship snakes via UPS. Is this true?

RESPONSE (LILLIAN G.) 04/30/2009 03:20 AM
Dear Lucille,

Thank you for your question. UPS can accept certain live animals for U.S. domestic transportation, including Alaska and Hawaii, on a limited basis. This service is currently not offered to or from Puerto Rico, or international locations.

Packages containing live animals must be prepared in accordance with specific packaging requirements. This is to ensure the humane care and safety of the animal during transportation. Live animals will only be accepted for transportation when shipped via UPS Next Day Air service, Monday through Thursday, and not on Friday or Saturday.

Live animals that are prohibited from being shipped and are not accepted for transportation include, but are not limited to:

- Any mammal: Examples: dogs, cats, etc.
- Any poisonous, venomous or threatening animal
- Any Threatened or Endangered species
- Arachnids (All): Examples: mites, scorpions, spiders, ticks
- Birds (All)
- Crocodiles (All): Examples: alligators, caimans, gavials
- Obnoxious Insects: Examples: flies, locusts, mosquitoes, roaches, termites, weevils
- Snakes (All): venomous and non-venomous

I have to say that I'm for SYR right now... I've shipped through them THREE times (All snakes, one even had multiple snakes inside) and had absolutely no problems! This clearly seems to be the exception to the rule... It's not like every single person who has shipped through them has had problems. Sure, there are delays, that happens. With any shipping service, no matter what you're shipping.

As for the policy of not shipping snakes. That does seem weird considering that SYR has it listed on their website with pictures etc that they ship snakes. They even sell a SNAKE shipping kit... So, what's the deal with that? Robyn, as somebody who wants to see SYR become a success, I really wish you'd give some insight into this little matter. :shrugs:

when I emailed UPS, they did state that there are a few accounts that have been approved to ship snakes. they werent exactly helpful, and it took a couple emails to get that response, but they do have certified shippers.

Thanks Robyn & Rich. That was a great way ease a lot of people's minds. I have been planning to offer customers a choice of services and have been anxious to try out the SYR but must admit to being a bit apprehensive. Now I am more comfortable with my plan to offer both.

I have not shipped nor received many snakes but have had other packages arrive by UPS & FedEx and have never experienced a problem with either. The few snakes I have sent or received have been via DHL or FedEx and again, never any problems with either.
