Bad Scenario, please help

So sorry to hear of your loss!

Follow the excellent advice from Hypancistrus to prepare for another baby. If all of your set up is correct, then the most important thing is to get a baby (or yearling, if you can find one you like) that is really healthy and eating well, and one that has not been kept with other babies, such as many pet shops do. Separately caged snakes are less likely to be stressed or exposed to as many pathogens, and less likely to have problems than those piled together in a cage.

I actually poured an entire gallon of straight ammonia into my 20L when I was disinfecting it after my hatchling died of crypt. Mine was vet confirmed though. I wore gloves, and did this outside, and took a sponge and sponged the pure ammonia over the entire inside of the tank and screen. I let this sit for 15 minutes and then added enough water to double the volume. If you do it outside, no worries. Let it sit a while. Then flush with plenty of running water until no ammonia smell lingers. Let dry in the sun.

Like I said, with no confirmation, you could also use bleach, but I am a worry wart. :)

Also, keep bleach and ammonia away from grass if possible. It had some... interesting effects... on my parents lawn.... :sidestep:
 
The sun is a great disinfectant! Remember, never mix bleach with ammonia, or with any other cleaners that contain ammonia. Use one of them, rinse well, then use the other, if desired.
 
Wow, thats really sad :( I'm really sorry to hear about Kevin.

Although it may be a good idea to go to another pet store, I got my hatchling from Petco and she was fineBUT I asked the guy packing her up for me to let me watch her eat so that I would know I had a good baby. I took pictures of her head markings and her very distinct saddle on her back so I could let her food digest for a few days and come back and know I was getting the same snake. Although I took a risk doing this(someone else could have taken her) I knew that it was always best to watch a snake eat before you bring it home.

Everything turned out and I got Erricca home and have'nt had a problem since. She is doing really great and has a huge appetite. So if its cheaper or easier to get a snake from a petstore, you could try that. Or order one online from South Mountain Retiles :)

Again, I'm so sorry about Kevin *tear* I hope your next try goes better.
 
Thanks to everyone for all of the advice, I will be cleaning the tank later today and will let it sit in the sun for a few days afterwards.

As for a new snake, I doubt I will try petco again if only from Kathy's post about disease and lots of baby snakes huddled up together. I was looking at the classifieds on this site and ran across this one for a 2007 Miami Corn.

Air I am very sorry to hear that Kevin did not make it. It is hard to loose them, I know. Congrats on being willing to get another and try again. Good luck make sure to make a new thread with the new one.
 
I lost my first two hatchlings in a row and felt like a real failure. My third was purchased from a show from RichZ and SerpenCo and he is a thriving, gorgeous three year old now. Don't give up! This hobby is well worth the effort. :)

Giving up is not on my agenda ;). Im looking forward to trying again
 
You might try PMing Jay and PJ, or Joe, (Captain Bogart) or Katie (Arpeggio Angel) or Deb (Pasodoma) or Carol, off the top of my head to name a few, and tell them you are looking for a friendly pet snake, doesn't have to be fancy, and see what they have. I got a three year old Miami from Carol and she is just a sweetheart! Probably any breeder has extra adults (or yearlings) that aren't needed any more for breeding that are still young, healthy snakes with plenty of years left. I also have two adult corns visiting for a year. They are snakes that I didn't raise, that came in not knowing me, that are super-friendly and fun. An older snake is just so much more enjoyable than a tiny fragile baby.
