• Hello!

Either you have not registered on this site yet, or you are registered but have not logged in. In either case, you will not be able to use the full functionality of this site until you have registered, and then logged in after your registration has been approved.

Registration is FREE, so please register so you can participate instead of remaining a lurker....

Please be certain that the location field is correctly filled out when you register. All registrations that appear to be bogus will be rejected. Which means that if your location field does NOT match the actual location of your registration IP address, then your registration will be rejected.

Sorry about the strictness of this requirement, but it is necessary to block spammers and scammers at the door as much as possible.

Signature area use - specifically, dragon images

I have no intention of doing that. Matter of fact I have been talking about expanding this site for years, but just never had the time to act on that possibility. This site is a WHOLE LOT more oriented towards general discussions then FaunaClassifieds is, so at sometime in the future, I very well may go with the flow. FaunaClassifieds can be more business oriented, and this site can be more the place for actually discussions to take place.

But just don't make this site lose that loving feeling! :sidestep:

I think if people choose to use outdated technology (dial-up) then they don't need to complain about the drawbacks of that technology.

OK, so the large percentage of America that lives out of the range of cable and DSL service just don't count for jack? Don't say, "But what about satellite" un til you address ALL of the NUMEROUS drawbacks to that option!"

I used dial up for a long time because it was less expensive. It's easy to take high speed internet for granted (and expect everyone else to have it) when YOU have the means to afford it. That does not mean everyone can.

10% of US households don't have access to highspeed Internet. Hey, I don't have DSL TV because I don't want to pay for it. If I _did_ put DSL TV as a priority, I couldn't afford as much herp stuff. If I ate filet mignon every night, I couldn't afford as much herp stuff. If I didn't buy a $250 bike trailer for my dog, and a $60 sweater from Orvis, and $35 dog food, I could put that toward DSL, but I just don't care that much about it. If you _want_ something, you find a way to get what you want. I guess if I was in the 10% that doesn't have DSL or cable Internet available, I could go to the library or any free hotspot. Anyway, there's a big difference between not available and can't/don't choose to afford.

It's really not a large percentage of anyone that uses dial-up. For curiosities sake I randomly selected 10 sites that I monitor stats on and the percentage of dial-up users is floating around 5% (worldwide). Cable is currently king (averaging 55%) with DSL (averaging 20%) commanding a close second.

Here's an idea to kick about.....
Why not move the DYK thread to the social groups.....
When the two groups I had were running most of the people on there used them exactly the same way as DYK....
That way it would free up the boards.....
You can also run C.S. side by side (I did) and have the boards and the social group up at the same time....

Nanci said 10% live outside of high speed access....so that is 28 million Americans. Yep - that isn't many potential users at all!

Maybe only 5% of YOUR sites' users are on DU is because they are so slow to load that so those potential viewers go to OTHER sites that do load quicker via their server? I'm not sure your quoted statistics are meaningful. That would be like me saying 90% of Americans love snakes because 90% of my sites viewers own them! LOL.

BTW,
KJ

Interesting idea, Mike!

The social groups would be a great place for DYK with just few exceptions.

First of all, you can't quote anyone in there, which makes conversations difficult. There are fewer options such as uploading photos from one's pc, they have to be done from online hosting. You don't have the "40 post/page" option, which can really make it difficult to try to nagivate through tons of posts. There's also no "new posts" tag to take you back to where you left off at your last visit.

Ok, ok...enough with the negative waves, Moriarty. :p

HORRIBLE IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Social groups are so difficult to read, backwards, that they are barely worth looking at. Just my opinion.

Why not just find out how many people on here have dial-up instead? Even in rural areas many do now have the capability to switch over and in 5 years I would say the vast percentage of our country will have this access. Look at what is happening with TV signals...they are ALL going digital despite the fact that not everyone can afford to convert. There is no such thing as fair for all- decisions are made on the majority which will always ignore the minority period. I really don't see how the DYK thread is slowing down this whole site- it sure doesn't for me. Why not start a DYK 2 leaving the DYK thread, but closing it for new posts and deligating them to the DYK 2 thread?

But anyway...

The number of posts in a particular thread won't significantly impact your pageload times, unless you're in that thread. And then, graphic images and hotlinked images (like the dragon eggs) will impact the pageload more than the thread posts themselves.

Why pick on DYK? Why not delete the nine billion redundant "My snake regurged" "My snake didn't poop" "My two snakes live together" "My snake only eats live" "My snake poops too much" "My snake laid eggs now what" "My snake poops on me" threads?

:roflmao:
Good point!

Being people don't both to use the search function that may not be a bad idea. Just make a sticky for those questions and delete the rest...in a month there will be a bunch more anyway, lol!

My point is the large number of posts on DYK isn't slowing down anybody's Interwebz experience except maybe the (what percent of the 5% of people, worldwide, that don't have broadband, that have electricity and a phone line and a computer, that subscribe to this site, that don't hate DYK) one person I described in parentheses. And for that person, the content probably makes the wait worth it!

Yeppers....

Although I don't visit DYK thread all that much...I shy away from the social groups for that exact reason.
