King Timber

Buzzard

two corny
Okay its actually two different incidents. Now that I've been in this little sleepy town, people seem to come to me for anything snake related. Not to bad of a thing, because I see some neat stuff, and there isnt anything else to do here in LA(Lower ALabama).

Roughly 2 weeks ago, my neigbor came running over to the house and told me his dogs got a hold of a snake and he wanted me to check it out. So I jumped the fence and proceded to pull a snake out from one of the dogs mouths. What a pretty eastern king they had found. I jumped back over the fence and took it inside to inspect the damage that the dogs did. a few bent up scales and one small punture near the vent.

So I proceeded to treat with water and neosporen(?). For several days I watch and made sure he was moving fine and decided 1 meal. If he eats and poos I will release him. My problem was if I released him near the house or in my yard that he would wonder back to the dogs yard and I may not be there to swoop in and rescue him again. So the other evening, after he poo-ed, I took him to a near-by(5 miles away) woods. I had to get at least one pic before releasing it.

The most awesome thing, this snake never showed any agression towards me, never musked or poo-ed on me, and never bit me.

Okay, the mouse shed sits at the back of my property. Over the last 2 years I have found countless grey rat snakes raiding the shed and even a cornsnake. But last night I ran into this.....

Timber rattle snake(roughly 4 1/2 ft long)

So needless to say, It got a little scary at first because I was less than a foot away from stepping on his head (it was dark, you can see the flashlights light in the pic). So what to do, the door to the shed was wide open. I did not want him going in there. So I grab the snake hook, and attempted to lift it into a garbage can. It was having none of that. So i use the hook and scared it back into the woods at the end of the property. Knowing it will probably come back. I now know I will be wearing my boots(not flip flops) evertime I go to shed......

Nice looking rattler! I guess he was hoping the mouse shed would be a all-you-can-eat buffet!

AWESOME!!! Beautiful King and just impressive timber. Glad you didn't get too close in flip-flops!!! THAT would be scary.

Coolness... One of the best things about living down here is all the snakes, IMHO! It's great that your neighbor called you before the dogs did more damage, and super great that you took care of the fellow and put him in a safer place.

It doesn't look like you'll have to worry about mice in the shed this summer, either. lol

Thanks everyone,

The one thing about the rattler, It wasnt aggressive at all. It actualy only rattled twice at me, even while I was taking so many pictures and never struck out at me. Now saying that, I have come across eastern diamond backs as big as this Timber before, but that was in FL at the park I worked at. When this snake rattled it was the loudest rattles I have ever heard. It made all the other rattlers, that have rattled at me, sound like wuzzies. :)

I counted on another pic(one that might be used in a photocontest, so it wont be posted) 12 rattles....

Next to Corn Snakes, the Eastern and Striped California Kings are my
favorite snakes ! . . . . Only seen a couple of live ones in the wild in my
life though. Saw two DORs down here on Columbia in the last year. One of
them was a older adult that was pretty freshly dead. BEAUTIFUL Snake
that was unlucky enough to be on the road at the wrong time. . .sad to
see
