The Rule Of Thirds.
Nope, I'm not hatching anything out this season. This does belong in the husbandry/basic care forum. :)

After seeing a few people's creations a number of months ago, and with a bit of (harrumph) spare time on my hands, I decided to bake up a few hides from Sculpey clay. Just rolled it out and formed it over some aluminum "mini loaf" pans and cut holes with an Exacto knife. Easy as pie crust, so to speak.

The first will be for Sangre's tub (yes, I chose clay colors to match the morphs), the second is for my male lav, and the the last shot is one of surprising Emtarkanderundergunderson out of her hide and into the aspen.

jazz

Hey thats a good idea!.. how long did it take you to make those?
I cranked out 6 hides in about an hour, including baking time (10 minutes at 275 degrees F for every 1/4" of thickness, per Sculpey's instructions). After initially kneading the clay for a few minutes to soften it, it's rolled into a ball and then "rolled out" with your basic rolling pin. You want to have dedicated tools when working this stuff, unless you want to risk prepping plastic polymers in your pastry. (Alliteration is fun!)

So outside of the three bucks for the rolling pin, the only other materials are waxed paper, the aluminum pans, an Exacto knife, and the clay itself.

Nice work with those hides

But I've got to know...do you have a reference note card and/or just copy and paste the name 'Emtarkanderundergunderson' from another thread each time you need it, or does it just roll off the finger tips?? :grin01:

Looks like the favorite hide of my snakes, an old Kleenex box. =P

Does Sculpey clay come in anything besides bright kiddy colors? Like maybe something more natural: Grey, beige, brown, terra cotta colors?

And cute name, by the way. lol

Yep. My normal het pewter has a terra cotta (Sculpey sells white and terra cotta in 1.75 lb bricks, and all colors come in 2oz wrapped packs), my charcoal has a grey, my pewter has a "granite" grey, the opal has a pink, etc.

But then again, cardboard comes in a lovely-- cardboard color. Bend it to an angle of your choosing, and you can accommodate nearly any snake. :grin01:

Heh, and when the snake craps on epoxy covered clay, it's a rinse and wipe dealio.

And hey, I said I had some spare time on my hands. :)

6 hides in an hour?! I wish I'd read this first, I couldn't asked for some tips!

I spent TWO HOURS last week just making one hide bigger (by adding another batch of Sculpey onto the bottom of a huge hide I'd already made). Yes for those of you that know my snake, he had outgrown it.

It's kinda fun though isn't it? :)

I'm digging up this thread because I'm going to try and make some sculpey hides. I bought the big white brick of sculpey... I was thinking of making white ones and decorating them with acrylic craft paint. Anybody know if there's any risks to my corns from the paint? I think it'd be fun to give my snakes designer homes...
