What is your STATE reptile?

ForkedTung

Serpent Mound Monk
Ohio is the Black racer...
In 1995, the Ohio Legislature made the Black Racer Ohio's official reptile due to the snake's prevalence in the state. The Black Racer's scientific name is Coluber constrictor constrictor. The Black Racer lives in Ohio's eastern and southern counties. The closely related Blue Racer, Coluber constrictor foxi lives in the northern and western portion of the state. The only real difference between these two snakes is their color, with Black Racers being entirely black and the Blue Racers having a gray or greenish tint to their skin. Both varieties of snakes are non-poisonous. They provide valuable assistance to Ohio's farmers by killing various types of rodents that can cause damage to the farmers' crops.
Interestingly I've never seen one in the wild, although I grew up on Lake Erie ( I have seen "Lemmy" though ) and I don't think they're found in the north...plus they are racers!

In Arizona its the Arizona Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake. Just like this one...

I pulled that image from here. So all kudos to them. I just had never seen one... They're GORGEOUS!

ND = nada

We only have 3 state animals:
State Bird Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta)
State Fish Northern pike (Esox Lucius)
State Honorary Equine Nokota breed (Descended from Sioux Chief Sitting Bull's war ponies)

:shrugs:
D80

NC is the box turtle. Seems we have state "everythings," tree, flower, bird, amphibian, you name it.

WI doesn't have one either that I can find.

We have a state insect though... how wrong is that?

Ours is just a Garter Snake... I guess that would explain why I see them everywhere when we're hiking with the dog!

EDIT: OT but a fun fact... apparently my state's official drink is cranberry juice! :p

Man, What a bunch of Lame-o states. I guess you'll need to move now heh, heh...I wonder if there's any correlation between states that don't and how drastic they're wildlife laws are?

Truth be told I started this thread because another idea from a semi-recent conversation I had popped into my head. I was vending a show here in Ohio and afterwards I was walking around asking some of the other vendors how they did. The "gecko" guy said not that great because Ohio is a snake state...I kinda let that go and then ran into him later and asked what he meant by that. He said " Snakes sell really well here but lizards don't, I don't do many shows here because of that. I sell almost all of my animals online and ship them to Florida or California..." hmm.. it just got me wondering if there is a demographic for reptile preferences...
anyone have a theory or etc.. about this?

PA doesn't have one either, but there is apparently a campaign to make the Eastern Box Turtle our state reptile.

In Arizona its the Arizona Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake. Just like this one...

Oh. My. Goodness. I WANT ONE!!!!

Ours is the the desert tortoise. I would have thought something more widespread throughout the state would have have been a better choice like the Cal King.
