Hi! I just got back from a Fourth of July celebration. My cousin let me hold her BEAUTIFUL corn snake. It was still very small, a little over a foot. I LOVED it. I had never held a snake before. I live in Central Minnesota. Are there any breaders in this area? Any tips on convincing my mom on the idea?
 
you can convince your mom the same way i convinced my wife - just go get one behind her back - although your mom might not let you get away with that like i was able to
 
Congratulations on your first time.
It might help convince her if you can show her you know how care for the snake. Read and learn what you can, teach her about the snakes and the requirements for keeping a corn snake.
If you can get her to hold a snake it helps.
 
I'd go the responsible route... I've done enough "sneaking" to know that it doesn't really work and makes the wife (or mom) NOT want to be part of or share in your hobby.

Get a book on them... preferably one by Kathy Love or Don Soderberg... then read up on them so that your mom can see that you're doing your due dilligence. Save your own money, then, show her the snake you want to buy (internet or at a store). Hopefully, you've shown responsibility and maturity enough that she'll allow you to purchase your own corn. Getting more after that is a matter of getting mom to enjoy them with you!

You need to PM a guy named Tricksterpup (Jim), he's from the Twin Cities and is active in the reptile club there. He will know who the corn breeders are. I think the reptile club has rescue snakes, too.

I lived in Minnesota for 40 years. I grew up catching any garter snake I could find, and a few red bellies and bullsnakes. I can't believe you haven't ever found a snake, there!

It was written by Kathy and Bill Love. Kathy is actually a member here. This book is really awesome and helped me out a lot when I was first getting into the hobby. Hopefully if your mom sees that you're serious about learning to care for them, she'll let you keep one.
 
Congratulations... My first snake I held was a baby python.. She got me over my fear... My mom saw how I was scared of them growning up and when I took a picture of me holding her and she saw she was somewhat proud of me LoL.. I bugged her and bugged til she gave in.. I brought my baby Whiskey home and of course she started getting curious about it.. now she loves him and Is wanting one of her own.. She wants a lavender... I told her that their really isnt anywhere down here that we can find one.. we dont have many breeders and I told her I could get her one shipped from somewhere but she thinks that getting them shipped will ruin them.. so now Im working on convincing her that it doesnt.. Lord parents.. just dont understand sometimes.. LoL

Wow... I guess that means that 2 of my 6 rosy boas, and at least 18 of my corns are "ruined". Shipping doesn't hurt them in the least,...what does she think happens to them? :)
 
I snuck one in... and then it turned into two... and then three... when mom thought I still only had 1. :D LOL

But I wouldn't recommend sneaking one in. Definitely just ask her!

(Oh, and 1TimeMoM, I'd only have 3 ruined snakes of my own, but 14 belonging to other people. LOL)
