Mooses.... MEECIES!

It's Jager time!
My little moose colony is doing fantabulously :) I forgot how much fun it was to keep and breed mice. I have had 2 litters now. The first was almost completely eaten by Wolfie, who after 11 months of refusing food will not only take live mice. I kept two babies to grow on, a male and a female with lovely splodgy cow patterns, just like their dad.

From the second litter I fed all but 3 of the babies to Wolfie. Those 3 babies are now fuzzies, with their adult colouration finally through. I couldn't believe it when I saw a pearl/champagne and a dove/blue amongst my ginger mooses! I have no clue about mice genetics, but I have had strange genes crop up in colonies before, so this is not unexplainable by any means, just a lovely surprise. My favorite colour of mouse is silver, so I am absolutely over the moon with that wee guy!

Fancy mice are often het for all kinds of things, leading to really interesting mice when you inbreed! It's lots of fun. I used to have a mouse colony when I did NOT have snakes, and they often threw interesting babies.

I used to let my colonies inbreed for 6 months or so, then cull everyone apart from the youngest and weirdest mice then introduce new fancies to create a new colony and new genes. It meant I constantly had new genes pop up, but I also had healthy mice that were not ridiculously inbred. I don't like to over breed my females either, so it meant my girls never had more than 3 litters each before being culled.

I can't wait to see if I get some long hairs and satins! Oh satin silver and white long hairs would be absolutly gorgeous!

Oh cool, I just looked up "long hair mice", silver ones would be neat. The silvery ones are cool, but I think I like the ginger ones.
They're so darn cute. I wish I didn't have to feed them to my snake.

Oh,your thread reminded me how much I miss my mooses!
When my collection was 5 corns I had at least 4 colonies of mice.
I was very excited breeding them to get the weirdest looks.I even had hairless for a while.I was keeping breeding records and everything.
After the corn collection exceeded the dozen,I had no more time for mice breeding.
But now that I have 60+ it really hurts to give more than a month's paycheck per year for frozen food...

They are so cute! I love baby mice :) I would like to start a small colony again, but Pam would never let me. She cant stand the thought of those cute little faces going into snake bellies. Not that I have anywhere to put them anyway, because they are stinky little critters!

They sure are stinky! With a small colony you don't notice the smell if you spot clean every day. I change their litter box daily, and the majority of the time it is foul. They just never ever stop excreting things!

Here you go Eric, pictures of my coo mooses! I call them coo mooses because in the field outside my house, we have dairy cow's that are white with splodges of colour. You know, your generic cow. I think my mice that have bands and splodges of colour on white looks like those cows. Therefore, coo mooses.

I now have champagnes, doves, argante and blue's all in self or in the coo pattern. As well as a couple that are banded perfectly!

The fourth from the last pic.....would be a keeper. White with the splodgey grey or blue. They all look so clean and neat. You obviously take very good care of them. Now I totally get the coo part. LOL.

Oh yeah my coo dove! Shes a girl as well! YAY! I will be keeping her, and the banded champagne. I just adore silver stuff!

I clean my mooses out twice a week. I love cleanliness. The mice are very good at using their litter tray though, so I empty that every day to keep all the bad smells at bay. I do always keep a little of the nesting when I am doing full bedding changes, just so the babies and the mumma's recognise their own smells.

Aww they are just soooooo adorable!!! I want mooses and ratties, but I can't because they set my asthma off :(

You'll just have to keep posting updates on them, so I can enjoy them through your photos! :D
