Build a breeding rack

ZoologyGirl

Under Tank Heather
I built my very own mice breeding rack recently out of cat litter pans. Unfortunately the van ness brand from wal mart (that you could get for $2 a piece) changed their style and they no longer work for this (not a flat top). I got the pans from petsmart instead.

The fun starts at 2:40 ;)

That was really cool, Heather! I'd love to do something like that in the future.

I recognized that music as TETRIS music after about 12 seconds. I was like: "I know this tune"

It was definitely in your best interest to have it inspected by professionals before completing assembly. Go you.

:p

Had to thank you. I asked my husband about breeding mice telling him there was a great rack that looked simple enough. He agreed and finished it this past Sunday. I included a pic. Its made mostly of scrap wood but does the job.:twohammer

I built one just like that. They are great. I had a litter of 9 last week.

That video was AWESOME! I laughed out loud more than once, I'm a tetris freak too, so that part was obviously my favorite!

Thanks for all the work building the rack and documenting it!

Rebecca

Here is my first (successful) pregnant mouse and litter from this rack :dancer: (I've had previous pregnant mice, but they ate the babies)

And here are some pics I took a couple weeks or so ago and forgot to post them, of my first litter using the rack system.

Excellent rack and success. :D

I'd make a rack, but I don't want to deal with with making an overhead feeder, and I don't like all the space between tubs; you could put two more in that without all the extra space, I think. *OCD's on these things*

Thanks :) In mine I designed it so that the space between the tubs was just right for easy filling of the overhead feeders. It is just enough room to stick a handful of feed in, and then empty said hand. I used to keep my first colony of mice in a normal sterilite type tub, with a dish of food...but much of the food was wasted by the mice.

Great job Heather and even a better tutorial. You did an awesome and very professional job. And your a girl! :grin01: ;) JK.
I think I may just use your plans. When I do I think I will make a video just to see how it matches up with yours. Cudos!

The "overhead" feeder is practically already made when you make the racks. And the "space" is needed to allow for the water bottles. If you dont leave space you will need to pull the water bottle for the rack below, the tub your pulling out. It may seem a waste of space but trust us it is not....

Thanks a lot. I'm making that same exact thing today. It's so much more space saving than those plastic buckets and, you won't waste food. Also, cool song in the beginning.
