10 Gal vs. Kritter Keeper for Baby Corn

I've tried to search the forums before posting, but I didn't find anything quite like my question. So I'm sorry if this is a repeat.

I'm seriously considering buying a Corn, and I've read everything I can get my hands on so I can be responsible keeper. Yet, I can't seem to find a definite answer on the best size tank for a baby Corn.

I think I'd like to just use something like a 10 gal tank so that it would have plenty of room, and I don't have to worry about upgrading to a 20 for a long while. But I'm worried that it might be too big and stress the poor thing out.

So, what do you think? Would a 10 gal be all right, or should I go for something smaller - like a Kritter Keeper?

Thanks,

- j

Yeah go with the ten for now it a good size for a hatchling. Just add hides and vines, branches and such.
Latter on you could use if for a feeding container.

Either a 10 or a 20 would be fine. Here's how I set up a 10 for babies: (The snake that went into here weighed 6g).

This is how I set up a 20 for babies: (The snake that went in here weighed 7g. She will stay in there for life. She loves her hammock)!

Nanci, I love your vivs! I need to get a hammock or two.

Jjester, it's perfectly fine to put a wee one into a larger viv, as long as there are plenty of hides around so they never have to feel wide-open-exposed. Bedding to burrow in is another thing that helps them feel safe. Remember that these snakes DO live and thrive in the great outdoors, which is much larger than the largest viv. If you want to set your baby up a 10- or 20-gal viv to start with, go right ahead.

Good for you for doing your research first, and wanting to have a healthy happy corn snake!

I keep my babies in ranch-style kritter keepers. You can buy them at PetCo, local herp shows, or order online.

10's are great for babies, but they just gotta be filled up with decor so the little guys feel safe :D GL!

And Nanci, are those hammocks really used by the snakes? I saw some in the local pet store and actually thought about it.

I use 10 gallon tanks for my some of my hatchling size snakes. I don't see a problem with using a 20 gallon as long as it has lots of hides and decor, but if I were to use a 20, I would put two water bowls in it just to be safe.

we use the med kritters for the baby snakes. Babies like to be snug and warm and it helps to regulate them for awhile till ready to move to a five gallon. We increase the size as they grow. Sometimes baby corns can have a hard time regulating their temp in a large tank so we just do this for awhile and it has worked well for us. They also love to hide out in paper towel tubes in the keepers. Be sure to put the smallest heat pad under one side and not to put the bowl over the heat :)

here is a care sheet too

good luck finding your new baby :)

I have three snakes that have them and use them. A couple have gotten their hammocks taken away because they didn't like them. So it depends on the snake. Cherry and Jasmine are in theirs every night.

I don't think one or the other is really better. They each have their good & bad points. You just have to decide which bad points YOU find better to deal with. I bought a 10g for my first corn, but two 20g long tanks for the two corns I've got ordered. I did that because it was easier for me to put a lot of hides, maybe two water dishes ect. in at the beginning than have a whole lot of stepping stone tanks that I'd have to store, or might have a problem getting rid of. But that's because space & price is something I have to worry about. If you however don't have to worry about that, doing the stepping stone thing, is a great excuse to buy something else to go in those tanks after your corn outgrows it! ;~)

I keep my babies in plastic shoe-boxes I get from Big Lots.

Super easy to clean, escape proof, and small enough you can't lose your snake in it. :D

Oh my god, I love the hammock! I must have one!

I picked up a hammock yesterday after seeing Nanci's... I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical that Colonel Mustard would be interested. You know; sometimes you get something cool for your pet and they end up not wanting to have anything to do with it.

Well, not long after he went back into his viv from being fed...

I put his leafy plant next to it to encourage him.. whaddaya know! :D So, thanks Nanci!

Where do you guys get the hammocks? And not to be crass, but about how much do they cost? I'm going in to Town tomorrow, was already going to go to Petco to pick up some other stuff, will have to look for them there. Sorry for the somewhat off-topic post.

Mine's a "ZooMed Repti Hammock", was about $9, and is 14 1/2" long or so. I got mine at a local pet store. There's a few different kinds out there, you may find something to fit your needs. :)

With that enclosure in mind, i found for my ever increasing addiction, a house that is good for a while * as size goes* for my 13.7 g yearling i have a 26 gallon long like 18'' L by 6'' H 8 '' W that was about 6.99 which is if i'm correct (?) way be cheaper than the critter ranch keeper thingy you just gotta screw holes in the top sides and lid for air. super easy too clean and keep an eye on them but i lay down her water dish, tp rol and fake vine leaves and shes always cruising and burrowing and good to go. thermometer and UTH but they're hard to keep stuck to the bottom. doesn't get too warm to melt the plastic though. like 1/2'' bedding. good luck! show us some pics!

So cute! I actually got the first hammock for my dragon, Isabel, but she wouldn't have anything to do with it. So I gave it to Cherry, a snake of superior intelligence, who immediately knew what a hammock was for! I need to get pics of jasmine in her hammock- she loves it.
