8 ft rattle snake

I found this picture on the world wide web, thought some people would enjoy *such a shame he killed it.*

On a side thought I'm considering raising snakes that would kill rattlers and that survive in the hot dessert. Bet I could sell entire clutches at a time to farmers and ranchers.

haha forgot the picture! The other snake is called a ring neck and I just found out is indigenous to my area. just thought it was cool.

I would've enjoyed a picture of the same critter alive & looking angry much more. I realize the person doesn't think they did anything wrong, and depending on how they ran across that crotalid, they may not have. But a HOOJE rattler alive & rattling is much more interesting to me. If you find that picture PLEASE share it.

Nope just more dead ones =/. I did find a guy who breeds albino diamond backs. I don't encourage keeping venomous or very large snakes as pets so I won't post it thought cause he has his website on the picture.

That guy is a jerk IMO. What right does he have to take the life of a creature who has lived and contributed to it's eco system for years? If the kill was done purely out of fear of being bitten, then he's a douche bag. There are half a dozen other, more conservation-friendly ways of removing the threat. Scum ball, that's what I think he is.

None of those are over 6 foot, most prolly ain't over 5. Its all about the angle of the camera vs distance.

And though, I do not normally condone it, some snakes need killin. Not all, but some do. However, not really in good taste to take a picture of anything dead in that manner. Clean it up, give it a little dignity.

Id argue against most of that. I think that at least 2 of them are well over 6 feet. And touching a dead venomous snake still isnt wise, they are well known to bite LONG after being killed, even when their head has been cute off.

Every one of those rattlesnakes is Crotalus atrox, the western diamond back. I have seen hundreds, if not thousands of atrox. Of the many I have seen, both in the wild and in a commercial collector's piles of snakes. I have seen no more than 10 that were over 6'. The state record for atrox is 7'2", that's the largest killed in Texas. The vast majority of "big" atrox killed are between 5' and 5'6". Very, very few are killed in the 6'+ range. And I doubt any of the pictured ones are.

I think it's a shame they killed it and then took pictures... one of the guys in the photos (second picture post on the right) is even kind of smiling. :( I can understand removing threatening snakes, but the dead body isn't a trophy!

I think many hunters and fishermen would disagree that isn't a trophy. While I don't like the idea of killing animals for pleasure, we as herp people are much more sensitive about snakes being killed. Would we be as upset if someone posted their trophy buck or marlin, I wonder?

Honestly, if those had been killed back where I am from, they would have been battered and fried up. It is sad that the snakes were killed though. I would love to have seen them in the wild, alive and rattling away.

Definitely the angle, those snakes aren't over 5 and a half feet I bet.

Since I don't know the story behind the pictures, I cannot say whether or not I condine the killing of the snakes. But with things like rattlesnake "roundups" going on every year, I would not be surprised if that were the case here.

Hey Mike,

You know just as well as me that if a rattlesnake is living in Texas it is headed to Sweetwater. If you do not know what I mean please do not ask.

Um ok. Not sure what your point was there.

Never mind if you never heard of it. It is or was the largest rattlesnake roundup in Texas and I think the U.S. It is bad news for all snakes because they spray gasoline down in the dens to get the rattlesnakes to come out for easy catching and almost the snakes will die from the gas. Just bad news.

death is easily avoided. if oyur walkin rattlers rattle for the reason of warning... backing off would prevent death in either situation.

the snake is just as scared of you as you are of it.. its going to do what your going to do which is enter protection mode and kill whatever it thinks is harming it..

As much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree with Mike on this one. Those are sopme decent size atrox, but not more than 6', in my estimation.
