a 'clear' alternative to Rubbermaid shoeboxes

Mike@boakingdom

The Fanatical Hobbyist
About 3 or 4 weeks ago I was at Kmart and saw these Martha Stewart boxes. I thought about how nice they look and later decided I'd get some. Well, those of you who know me know I literally have no spare time so it wasn't until yeserday that I picked up one of them just to try it out.

They're clear as glass and have nice tight fitting lids.

Any price difference compared to RM or sterilites?

BTW, does anyone else see the humor and irony of using a Martha Stewart product for confinement? :noevil:

Let us know in the future how it holds up to the wear and tear of cleaning, taking the lid on and off, etc. If it lasts alot longer, then it's worth the price difference.

I was thinking that too - gorgeous snake.
The boxes look like a good idea - do let us know how they stand up to being used.
CAV - :)

LOL I was thinking the same, myself about martha stewart. I like the boxes though they are nice.

Mike that is a nice looking Hognose you have there.

Jeff C.

Thanks.....That's a "Red Dusty Hognose", from what I understand, they're a Texas locale that just naturally have lots of red.

I would please like to know what the measurements to those boxes are. Also did you find it easy to make air holes in the plastic? Is the plastic thicker and harder than the rubbermaid/Sterilite containers? Thanks.

They're roughly 11X7 inches, and less than 3 inches deep. I used a soldering iron to put about 20 air holes in the lid, it was quick & easy. The container itself is thicker and slightly harder than rubbermaids & sterilites. I'm sure a soldering iron would work just as well on them, I've used it on the very hard poly boxes by Cambro Mfg. in the past. (although the one in this pic was drilled)

Thanks for the info Mike. Too bad the size is so small. Do you know if they make them in larger sizes?

Philips makes a couple boxes like that also. They have a min order amount but I think that they are cheaper than $7.00 (it's been a while since I placed an order).

Can you post their contact info...there's a whole bunch of people trying to find Phillips boxes. They used to be a regularly stocked product line at all of the "The Container Store" locations, but they dropped that line a year or two ago leaving a lot of herpers searching for new sources of Phillips boxes.

When I find it...

I will post their contact information. I've already had a few PM requesting the same thing. I have to go through my "piling" (not to be confused with filing)system. When I locate their contact information I'll post it here.

Well then maybe you should take electrical tape and make bars!!!
But yes that is incredible coincidence!!!

I found it...

After looking through two and a half piles (why didn't I start with the third pile?) of paperwork I finally found their info from an order I first placed back in 1998. Somewhere my other orders are still in hiding. Their phone number is the only thing that was the same. Well here it is:

FIRST PHILLIPS MARKETING
96 EXCHANGE STREET
P.O. BOX 208
LEOMINSTER, MASS. 01453

PHONE:1-978-534-9120 OR 1-800-457-2789
FAX: 1-978-537-9120

Miminum order of 5 cases. They have three sizes:

Item Description Case Weight 5-9 Cases 10-19 Cases 20 +

955 12 ½ x 6 ¾ x 3 ¾ 12 13 lbs. $38.04 $30.48 $29.16

956 16 x 10 ¾ x 3 ¾ 6 15 lbs. $46.92 $36.84 $35.82

957 16 x 10 ¾ x 6 ½ 6 17 lbs. $56.34 $44.94 $43.20

Now for the bad news...they are out of the smaller ones and haven't made the largest ones in a while (though they may if there is a big enough demand). They do have some of the medium ones in stock presently. They said it could be a month before they get more made and their inventory back up. I'd call and let them know what you are interested in and go from there.
