So...a gentleman came into the pet shop on Friday with a tiny little Cali king. He simply didn't want him anymore, and wanted to know if we could sell him. The shop is not allowed to sell Cali Kings, as we do not have a State Propogation Permit for Native Species. When I informed the gentleman of this, he inquired if I knew anyone that might want a yearling Cali King. So...as usual...I told him to bring it in and let me check it out.

This boy was in fine health, no mites, no issues, and friendly as a newborn puppydog.

So here is my latest acquisition, Oreo, the banded Cali King. Thanks for Looking!

ohhh very nice snake!! you are soo lucky you get these guys for free!! I'm glad the snake is in a home where he will be loved :0)
 
I need to find a pet store round here that I can hang out in to get great deals and free snakes! I am so jealous Oreo is one awesome king!

The hardest part about the "freebies" is the fact that I cannot, WILL not, take all of them. Some of the snakes these people bring in to me are on their deathbeds, or simply badly treated. I have had people bring in snakes with sheds so old, there were distinct rings around the tail from being cutoff. Unfortunately, I have to turn down alot of offers, because either the snakes are not going to make it, or they simply are not suitable to my plans. Those that I like and feel have a really good chance of thriving under my care, find a new home. The rest...unfortunately, I don't know what happens to them. I wish I could save them all...but I can't...and I won't allow myself to try.

Fortunately, this little guy is in great shape. I believe him to be a yearling, however, the guy that gave him to me said he had him for 2 years. Unless this snake brumated himself while in captivity, I cannot fathom his being 2 years old at that size. My yearling corns are bigger. I suppose it's possible, but...given how strong and healthy he is otherwise...I don't think it's likely. I think it is more likely that the guy over-estimated how long he has had the snake for...
 
I don't think he looks that tiny! Choco is a 2006, I think he's right around 80 grams, and he's just at the size where I can put his around my neck for a second and he's not to small to fall off. (I forgot where I was going with that thought...)

I've turned down one rescue ever, because it was illegal to keep without a permit.

He can only handle small-medium fuzzies. My yearling corn eats hoppers, and my other 2 yearling kings are on weanlings. My two '05 corns both eat large adult mice.

It just seems like a tremendous difference in size compared to my other snakes of similar age. When my yearlings are twice his size, I can't believe that he is a full year older...Of course...I could be wrong. It's happened before and will certainly happen again...
 
Yeah, Choco is eating hoppers. You never know what went on with small snakes, though. That 2005 Lila (corn) I got was only 24 grams, and she's a super eater and is healthy and strong- she's doubled her size in the not even two months I've had her...

I really like Calis- they might be my favorite species.

I have only handled one, but that was enough. I'm hooked. I plan to buy one next month at the local show.

Chris, Oreo is beautiful! I wish my freebies were that nice. The only animals that get dumped off on me are defective in some way. Non-feeding BP's with mild scale rot, birds with neurological problems, dogs with mental imbalances......... :sobstory:

I let my 8 year old nephew name him last night. He is here visiting and is so enthralled with all of my snakes. When he found out a snake was at the shelter and needed help, he begged me to go get him, he set up his tank and could hardly contain himself 'till I got home with the new guy. He has a million questions and wants to be holding one of the snakes every minute. It is great to have a budding snake-keeper in the making!

That is, of course, if his mom doesn't kill me 'cause now he is so excited about getting a snake of his own!

Isn't a child's enthusiasm just incredibly infectious?

My 3 year old daughter simply cannot get enough of "our" snakes...and yes...she insists they are "ours"...not mine, not hers..."ours". She constantly wants to hold one or the other, and is always asking questions like, "Is Sammi Snake in her old skin or her new skin?", "Is oreo a baby snake?", "Is Simon going to be a big snake?" and her favorite, "Aphrodite is going to be the mommy and Adonis will be the daddy, right?"...for a 3 year old, I am sometimes shocked with how profound her questions can be...
 
Yea, it is pretty cool. And fun for me, too!

It is especially neat for my nephew because his 14 year old big brother is kind of nervous about the whole snake thing, so this is something the little brother excels at.

It is also a good teaching tool about why we save animals from the shelter when we can (I have 8 shelter snakes among my collection), and why we don't kill snakes (like most everybody does in the rural area they come from).

He even told me last night that he wants to rescue animals when he is grown up. (I also co-run a dog rescue organization). Some hope for the next generation!

Most of my expense has been getting snakes shipped to me, and fixing Krusty and Milly.

I wish I could save every snake that needs rescuing. Unfortunately(or fortunately, depending on your view), I have plans for a breeding business, and this means that I must, out of necessity, excercise restraint in the snakes that I will keep...how can they help my breeding plans, how can I house them, how much time, food, and energy will they require, and are they healthy enough to avoid contaminating my existing collection(even with quarrantines, stuff happens).

So while I would love to be able to save every snake that lives in an unwanted environment, I simply can't. It would not make sense for my future business propositions, and I simply cannot take resources away from my "profit margins" to feed rescues. It may seem heartless and/or cruel...but it is a reality I must face, and I am comfortable with those decisions.

Kudos to you, for being in a position to help any animal that needs it! I would sometimes like to, but I must be realistic...

That wasn't meant to be critical, Chris- you've helped so many!! I'd be in so much trouble if I had a job where there was an unending supply of things that needed rescuing...
