Any one keep Bull frogs?

Allalaskan

The Crazy Alaskan
Well for a fun project with my kids we picked up 4 bull frog tadpoles today at the pet store. I'm sure not all 4 will make it, if they do then cool lol. As long as they make it to "frog-hood" I plan on making a big 4ft x 2ft x 2ft cage (comes out t 119 gallons) for them that will be 1/3 land and 2/3 "pond" or maybe half and half. Before I even start to build an amphibian cage I'm going to wait and see if these guys make it that far.

But it got me to thinking, I wonder if any one on cs.com has kept or does keep bull frogs as pets. I know they can get pretty big and from the research I have done I have read that they will even eat mice when full grown and are like a garbage can (eat any thing almost) diets make them easy to feed, or so I have read.

Any way I figured this would be a very educational experiment for my son (just about to turn 5) to see and would be some cool pets to have. I have done this before with local tadpoles but we always let them go when they were full grown, and since Bull frogs are not native to Alaska I will not be turning these guys loose.

So if any of you do keep these guys as pets post up some pictures of the frogs and there "vivarium" (is that what you call a amphibian cage too?) setups. Even if you don't have bull frogs but maybe some other amphibian that may be close to the same type of habitat as Bull frogs post some pics for some ideas on what I may do if my tadpoles mature to that point.

Thank :D

You might need to give them all their own home because of that appetite.

Other than that, I know nothing. :p But have fun with them.

I've never kept American Bullfrogs, but I thought I might go catch some or even some tadpoles this summer. They are an invasive species around here but aren't too widespread (yet.) The only place I've seen them is a little stretch of river near here where I've seen a bunch of tadpoles.

I did find this for ya though:

When they do turn froggy, you won't want to keep them together though. That appetite doesn't stop at bugs and mice. :grin01:

I have one that lives in my water garden. It's fun to listen to him call. They are not native here, he probably came in as a tadpole with plants. I'm a little worried about what he eats- I need new fish but I don't want to just buy really expensive bullfrog food!!

Good luck with them. I hope they do good and I want pictures if they make it. Sorry tho all the info I know about them is there legs taste pretty good.

That was freaking hilarious!

I would love to keep one. Just to hear it call. Lauren swears our dumpies call..but I have yet to hear it!

I got home from work the other day, and my heat pump/AC for the house was running, but it sounded like something was wrong with it. I'm thinking, oh, no. It sounded like something was rubbing. I got out of my truck and it was the bullfrog calling...

Well, I figured I would do a little update. When We got the tadpoles they had no legs what so ever and now the back legs are starting to poke out. One of the tadpoles legs are almost twice as long as the other ones legs but they are both starting to grow them :D For now I have them in this tank. Once they are fully formed frogs then I will end up building a much larger cage for them, most likely be something like 6ft long, 2 feet deep and 2 ft tall and will be divided in half and each will have its own cage being 3ftx2ftx2ft

Any way this is them atm and in the temp tank. Also I just changed the water so its a bit stirred up in these pics. Also the light thats on them is not always there, i put it on them just for these pictures.

So thats them. We started out with 4 but the other two died a few weeks after we got them but these two were the biggest and the toughest. We had them in our 29 gallon fish tank for a while and it was pretty cool watching them swim all over but now that the legs are starting to form i figured it was time to get them into a transition tank until they turn into froglets :D

I live in an apt with a pond right behind me and I love listening to them in the summer. However, I don't think I'd love listening to that if they were in my house. They can get very loud. At first I had no idea what was making those loud noises in the evening. I haven't heard them much this summer since it was so hot and I didn't have my windows open, I kind missed them. I like the turtles out there too peeking their heads up. They all jump down as soon as anyone gets near their basking spots.

Ahh I hope they all make it! They are so cool to keep, I used to have a bunch of them, they all turned out to be males, though, so they took up a lot of space with all those tanks. I think the coolest thing about them is how hardy they are, they thrive in the summer here and I've found the very same species in the middle of fall in the Adirondacks! It is an understatement to say that before I had snakes, I was all about amphibians. They are such quirky things, and you are really gonna love them.

The one out in my garden is about the size of a cane toad now- huge. He always kind of freaks me out when I see him! He comes out on land all the time.
