Ares The Uro

Nanci

Alien Lover
This is Ares, the gorgeous Saharan (U. geryi) uromastyx that was given to me by Joe (CaptainBogart) because he knew I would die without him. Ares was WC not once, but twice in his lifetime! First in his native home in Africa, then on a beach in Florida. He is very active and somewhat flighty, so there are only two decent pictures so far. And he's going into shed.

Reading about uros, I learned something interesting. "During developement, uromastyx embryos have two pairs of incisor teeth at the front of the upper and lower jaws. Soon after hatching, these teeth give way in the upper jaw to a bony downgrowth from the tip of the skull bones (the premaxillae) that develops into a large central cutting tooth. By the time a uromastyx is adult, all traces of the incisor teeth may be gone, with just the visible "beak" of the upper jaw remaining." Jerry G. Walls, Uromastyx Plus Other Common Agamids.

Ares "beak" is quite prominent! Here in this shot of him eating uncooked bean soup mix, you can see his powerful teeth. Good thing he doesn't seem to want to bite me!

That's it for now, thanks for looking!

A Saharan would be my top choice. Ares is really beautiful! Thanks for that Nanci.

I promise I'll get better pics sometime! He's just so suspicious! And he made his OWN burrow, doesn't like any of mine. (He goes back behind the artificial Rubbermaid burrow, crammed in there between the tub and the wall).

Whoohoo! Congrats Nanci, he's a stunning boy

Hubby's babies are home and seem to be settling nicely :D

I look forward to more pics of Ares, when he's more co-operative ;)

Oh he's so pretty! I want! They look so cuddly(although I've heard they're not). I just want to squish him! In a good way!

Nanci! Congrats!! I know you've been really excited and I must have missed when you actually got him but he's is beautiful and I'm sure he'll be just as spoiled as all the rest of your babies!

He is super cute and bright wow!! they do have nice big teeth- one good bite and say goodbye to the tip of your finger powerful jaws too!!

Wow Nanci, he's a real looker. I've never seen one with that coloration before....very nice.

Caught twice? He must have seen Madagascar.;)

Wow! I didn't know they came in other colors besides reptile brown! He's lovely!

Yeah, this guy's colors are killer. But i suspect due to him living outside for a while. All those UV rays just give them the color.

He is such a handsome devil Nanci! Glad to see some pics of him finally. How does he like his newly renovated house?

"Reptile Brown" eh? I think I'm going to market that as a shade of hair dye. Wonder how it would sell? Better than some other types of brown :grin01:

Very nice colors, but you committed a uro sin!
No pics of his tail! We need pics of his tail spikes!!!
