First: This is an extreme rough draft. It has a long long long way to go. This is like draft A and I'm going through the alphabet. I'll be cleaning up the lines, using color to define the nose and hair lines, and shadowing/muscle structure.

Second: My original version is rated a bit more pg-13/r with the shirt not being there, however I added the shirt very quickly for this site because I know we have kids. So please excuse the weird arm connection. I did the editing in about 10 seconds. Lol.

My main question is, do you think the upper human body is proportionate to the lower horse part? I think it is and my boyfriend thinks she's too tall or big or something. What do you think?

Also, side note: I drew this sometime between 11pm and 1am this morning on a laptop. That's why the lines are so blah and her face is icky. I plan on doing rough drafts on my laptop and then switching over to my desktop to use PSP7 and an actual mouse. Then the lines will be redone and color added.

I think the horse body is actually a little too small. Just imagine her with human legs. If her feet were where the hooves are, she'd have pretty short legs.

I agree. When you look at the horse body compared to her hands, it seems small. And I can't figure out how she would have two belly buttons...

I'm not an artist, but I would agree. The horse body is too small to be in proportion to her torso.

Everybody else has hit the issues I see. I do see the promise of something excellent though, so keeping working!

Nanci, two belly buttons?

I'll redo the horse part. It didn't occur to me to pretend she still has human legs to figure out the right size. Will post draft B in the next few hours. :D

Yep, the size of the horse part vs. the size of the woman is definitely disproportionate, unless she's supposed to be a "mini" Centaur(ess)? *grins*

To get the proportions right, you might just want to look at pix of women riding horses. That'll give you some idea of their proportions when they're together.

It's sure off to a good start, though. I think it will be stunning when you're finished.

Oh! Lol. I thought you meant you saw two. Thought I was going crazy for a minute. The belly button is mostly there so I remember where I connected the two.

And of course, I was in the middle of working on it when Sumo Paint crashed. Stupid internet program. I had everything resized and was just working on the back area. And because it's internet-based, there are no temp copies saved. So, I'm starting over again. For draft B.2 Lol

Anyway, I did this the easy way this time. Instead of redrawing the horse, I just cut the original image and enlarged the horse part. I think it fits weird, but maybe I'm closer to the right proportions? Also, do the hands still look weird?

I also included a compare for draft A and B to make thinks simple.

I think the horse's hind legs look particularly short, now. And the girl's torso still looks big. And the right hind leg is at a weird angle, like it's underneath the body.

It might help if I provide the pictures I'm basing this off of. The girl is an adult picture, so I gave her a quick dress. Also, the horse I'm using is a boy and I just sort of castrated him in the drawing. I planned on making it look more female down there as I worked. My line there might be throwing you off a little. Sorry about that. :)

The female will be presented as a link, even though I edited it so nothing would show. I felt it was better this way.

The proportions are much better in Draft B. You just need to "polish the edges" from your "cut, resize and paste". When I had the time to do my artwork using photos as guides, I did have to use some "artistic license" in the image to account for the odd things that the camera shows as the position but that just doesn't look right. The rear leg is a perfect example of a case where you might want to let your artist's eye be the better judge and not what the photo says it should be. Horses were my original favorite art subject and I would opt to make the angel of right rear be parallel to the left front, which would then have that rear hoof "closer" to the viewer's eye making the entire horse's movements seem more in balance. Make a draft using that slight alteration and see if you like how it looks versus the way it was before. If you don't like it, then it's just another of many drafts and you can go back to a previous version.

I can see that you have faithfully reproduced the horse in the picture. He's very foreshortened, and even in the picture his leg looks odd!

I had to trace the hooves to be honest. Simplest part of the animal and I can never draw them free-hand. I have work today, but I might be able to work on it after dinner tonight and see if I understand Susan's suggestion. If worst comes to worst, I'll probably hide the hind end behind a tree or something. Lol.

I think it is a great start. There is a reason people to draft after draft. I envy the people who can do it right the first time. I do agree the horse seems a bit off. I think that is the model you are using though. The horse looks like it would fit better with a male model than a female. When people think female they think grace and beauty. Maybe google some artwork of centaurs and see if you can find any female ones to compare it to.

Have you studied and practiced from a horse drawing book? Really, the sections of a horse break down into basic geometric shapes, which are then turned into horsey shapes after you have the proportions right. This makes drawing heads and hooves and bodies very simple.

I do all my artwork on the computer. I used to be able to draw unicorns fairly well... Let me re-phrase that: They looked kinda like unicorns. Lol. For some reason, I have a terrible time drawing feet and faces. It doesn't matter what it is.

I might try a different horse. I have a few Arabians that might fit better. I've never really drawn human/animal figures except a mermaid and now I'm starting to question the quality of that.
