ASUS eee pc and other netbooks

Yeah, so I was thinking the other day "wouldn't it be awesome if I could lie on the couch and browse the corn snake forums on a smallish type laptop deal?"

I went in best buy and checked out some ASUS eee pc, 8.9" and 10" netbooks. I have been going back & forth, but think I want to get the 10" (for bigger keyboard) black ASUS eee pc with atom processor & 160 gb hd for $349. I went back and forth on the solid state type deals, 12 gb w/ longer battery life vs. the 160 gb with shorter battery life. Still, reviews I'm reading say that I could probably still manage 5 hrs out of the 160 gb without going the solid state route. That is perfectly acceptable to me.

So I guess I'm looking to see what peoples opinions are on the ASUS especially, or any other good recommendations for comparably spec'd netbooks around the $300 price range. I am still in research mode but feel like I might buy one tomorrow!!! Uh oh!

My plan was to just research in best buy and buy on newegg.com, but the $30 mail in rebate I found on newegg's link can be used regardless of where I buy it! So please, if you have an opinion on these, good or bad, let me know!

It is little, weighs only 3.2 lbs and is only 1.5" thick!
 
I have one of those!!! Well, actually, mine is the 1000HD but it's pretty much the same. Best Buy doesn't sell my model anymore.

I freakin' love it! It is small and lightweight which makes it super portable, much more so then my Toshiba Satellite (which I am using now). That was the main reason I bought my Eee. I am a writer and I like to take my work with me everywhere! I have only had mine for a few months and work has kept me from doing too much writing on it, but so far, it has been fast and has a hard drive big enough to store most of my writing until I download it to a flash drive and transfer files to our main PC. The battery life is awesome! From a full charge, I get a little over three hours.

The only down falls I have found are that there is no internal CD drive, so I depend on flash drives and I was forced to make an additional purchase of an external CD/DVD drive. That wasn't too bad though because the CD drive on my Toshiba is shot. Poor old thing. And, they do not come with virus software, so make sure you get a good virus program installed on it before connecting to the net!

For the price, I say Go For It!!! I love mine and I don't regret getting a netbook instead of a new full sized laptop at all!

Thanks for the opinions! Glad to hear you love it. I am not too worried about the lack of CD/DVD drive. I actually use USB/sd cards quite a bit so I have plenty to stick in this thing. Just looks like a fun toy to crash around the internets and travel with.
 
I don't know about their net books but I only use Asus motherboards in my computers.
 
It is the funnest little computer I have ever used, that's for sure. I like my trusty old Satellite but I love my Eee. Once you get used to the tiny keyboard. But I don't hold the tiny keyboard against it. It's so cute it's lovable!! Hope you have fun with yours when you get one.

I just bought the Dell mini 10, it's primarily going to be used to take notes at school and do homework on the go type of thing. I have to say, the best feature is the fact that I can throw it in my purse. I opted for the 10" rather than the 9" because the screen is a little bigger so it makes it easier to surf the internet and read notes. I went with the bigger hard drive because that is what the IT person at work said to do... He explained it, but it went over my head. Have fun with it, I love mine. Though I use my old laptop for couch surfing.
 
I didn't realize they had such small laptops, and for $349, that sounds like a great deal. I would love to have a little laptop for cataloging different things and browsing the web, and that sounds like a great tool for that kind of thing. Good luck, and if you get one leave a review, I'm curious!
 
I definitely will leave a review when I get mine. I have only been hearing good things about these (well, except for minor picky things).

Thank you... I played with Photobuckets new editing software. Basically it's a pic that I changed to a color sketch and then played with the saturation. I was bored at work this morning... I did it to a bunch, playing with different features. I like the fresco and sketch ones the best.
 
Jen, it's a coincidence, because about a month or month and a half ago I almost walked out of Office Depot with a 10" screen, 160GB, 4-cell battery Acer netbook. I had researched it online, and Best Buy (my kind of store) was sold out, but not Office Depot. They had them online at Walmart, too. I was gonna buy it as a toy to clown around with. My secretary has a 10" screen HP netbook, but I haven't looked closely at it.
But I just looked now, and I can't find my bookmarks, or remember the model number I was looking at. Anyhoo, on my short list was next Asus and then HP.
Technology changes so fast, that what I was looking at 4-6 weeks ago is probably already obsolete.
Good choice (I have heard nothing but good things about Asus) and good luck. I'm anxious to hear about it.

I do remember the deciding factors were the 160GB HD, the RAM (upgrade-able...the first thing I do to make one run faster), the 4-cell battery, and,....a properly full-sized right shift key (which many scrimp on by making it too small or slightly out of place).
 
Hah, that's funny, I guess everyone is looking at these things. I just kind of started paying attention to them as I thought I wanted a full laptop. These seem like they're cheap enough that I don't care if it gets outdated in a month or two.

I did hear about the RAM, I will probably get 2 gb for cheap, $20-25, whatever has free shipping on newegg.

Well, the best buy near me doesn't have any of the 10" ASUS in stock (lucky I checked online) so I will head to Concord for when they open at 11 AM.

Hey maybe I can look at snakes too!!! YAY! Double goodness. :crazy02:
 
Has anyone used these things for "on the go" procvessing of RAW images and digital photo files?

I travel with my camera, and I often find myself loaded with 16gb of photos...quickly...but no way to preview them, and weed out the "worthless" images. I'm looking for a small, portable, easy to manage way to download my memory cards, preview my RAW files, and discard what can't be used.

Are the processors in these things strong enough to handle this sort of workload? Anyone know?
 
We use an ASUS X58L series.. It takes our pics when we are out and lets us preview them.... I don't know if thats what your asking Chris.... LOL
But as far as looking at sites while laid out.... Yep it works real good....
 
I bought one, yay!! I'm writing from it now.

I'm not sure about the photo editing. It has 3 usb ports & an sd/mmc slot, so I guess you could do that sorta thing. I have not tried to open up any large images. I think I'm going to leave all that to the desktop, this is just going to be my internet cruising machine.
 
I'm not looking to process images from, it...just preview and cull bad ones to make room for more. Temporary storage and preview is all I want to do. But...when shooting in RAW format, the image needs to be "processed"...which really just means it needs to be made "readable" by a preview engine like IrfanView, or something similar. RAW files are HUGE...

I just need to know if these little machines can be used for image previewing and temporary storage...I guess that would have been an easier question to ask...:D

You should be able to do photo editing just fine. If you find yourself Photoshop 7 should also work just fine on this machine as well.

I dont own one yet but been keeping an eye on it. But as laptop goes, Its very comparable to a Dell Latitude D600 in my eyes.

The only thing these laptops are missing are an optical drive but you can purchase one on the side and connect it to the machine. But its meant to either download everything wireless or via USB thumb drive.

But they fit perfectly in a backpack designed for laptop Sadly the solid state only goes to 16 gigs. So the best hard drive for taking outdoors is still very small. So you will have to rely on the larger one. But give it a few more years and we will see Solid state laptop drives as large as normal moving parts hard drives.
 
Glad you got it- it will be fun! I'm not sure what I would have done if they had both the Mini 9 and 10 when I bought mine. I really wanted the solid state HD, but the 9" keyboard is tricky to type on, not so much because of the size but because some keys are moved. I have barely anything on it; I just use it for surfing the web when I'm watching TV. I haven't taken it on a trip yet. Maybe I will take it to Daytona.
