Anyway, what are some large colubrids that tend to eat very well? I'm looking for something SIMILAR to a corn, but it doesn't have to be exact. I'm mostly looking for a type of snake that has a large adult size that typically gets big enough to eat at least medium rats. I'd like to not have to throw out uneaten rodents.

What about bull, pine, and gopher snakes, and the many king species? These are the ones I'm curious about, because I know most about them. Bulls are most interesting to me as I know they are thicker bodied than corns, and I think they get to something like 6 feet easily? :p Halp?
 
Heck, my corn Dash just ate a good-sized (leftover) rat last week! She's exceptionally big for a corn, though, at over 1100g. :rolleyes:

Bulls do get fairly large, and so do certain types of rat snakes... apparently the black rat can reach 8ft!

Both of these are known as "temperamental," but that usually means they'll have good feeding responses. ;) Aren't most colubrids known for being good eaters?
 
Indogos are Cites I- not everyone can keep them... there are certain regulations at some places.
 
I'm not sure a Florida King could eat a medium rat...Mine _can_ eat day old chicks, but it takes a while. They seem like jumbo mice/rat pups/chicks are the perfect size. Jake is 1200 grams.

Both of my P. obsoletas are quite gentle, and piggy, but only 5ft each. I have seen an 8' 2" rat snake, he was a hefty guy, about as big around as my BP. Apparently he ate large rats.
 
If you want something that gets larger than a corn, laid back and easy to handle as a corn, and eats just about anything, you might want to look into Russian rat snakes. They also have excellent color as adults being black and gold. They easily get 7 to 8 feet long and mine lay coiled around my shoulders while I clean their cages.

Bull snakes are totally different than corns and you might find them hard to handle and aggressive at times. There are many new color morphs out there now.

I personally love Florida kingsnakes, but have found corn snake people to be put off a little by their high strung personality and aggressive feeding habits.
 
My ball pythons don't even eat medium rats... what are you feeding over there?? :D

My full grown cali king can barely eat jumbo mice. I just don't even bother with jumbos. All my colubrids get "large mice" as their biggest food. My big female bp gets small rats. She could probably take a medium at this time, but she is growing fine on small. :D
 
You're lucky, Dave. My adult Cali King prefers three hoppers. No way would she take an adult mouse.
 
All my largest bull snakes, Russian Rat snakes, and Florida kingsnakes eat one or two medium rats when fed. It all depends on what's left over from feeding the rest of the snakes.

How big is yours? Mine is 15 years old.

Holy crap! Florida Kings get that big? I need to unearth my old kingsnake book...
 
Yeah I recommend Bulls, they are a nice snake and many morphs out there. I have a female here about over 6.5 and eats medium rats.
I also recommend Black Rats, or Texas Rats, again many morphs and as adults will eat medium rats.
And for a garbage disposal, yeah Florida kings get a good size for that as well. I have a male that does take mediums as well.
 
Same from me.. Bull Snakes and Black Rats
I have both and none are shy eaters..
The male Black Rat eats Med Rats with ease..
My Bull eats sm rats.. not quite big enough yet
for mediums.
 
Very interesting information. I'd definitely prefer something calmer than a rat snake though. The lucy I've got is more than a handful with just feeding. And I know there's some calmer species around, but I tend to get confused. Some sites call Texas and Black rat snakes the same thing. Urgh.

I know some people have been breeding bulls and trying to get nicer babies. And I'm not sure I could care for an indigo or deal with obtaining one.
 
I have always found black rats to be exceptionally calm! I mean like, pick one up in the wild and it's as tame as if you'd had it since a hatchling. Every one I have found has been like that.

I noticed that later, when I was reading a few links... weird they're allowed here in California, where we have among the strictest animal regulations. :shrugs: They are gorgeous, though!
