Boiga cyanea - Green Cat-eyed Snakes

Candachan

Luna Serpentry
After looking for these guys since 2005, I finally got a pair of yearling B. cyanea. These are really interesting rear-fanged arboreals and are red when they hatch and slowly change to be completely green. They are my first hots, though technically their venom is very weak. Right now they are settling in, so I didn't get many photos.

Some photos of Lady, ranging from baby pictures to today:

Those are beautiful. I would love to see if you are successful in breeding them. If I am at a good place I may be interested in one.

Thanks guys, I'm really really excited about these two, it's been a long time to wait for them!

Nanci, these ones are eating live pinks but I will be attempting to get them on f/t. In the wild they are mostly lizard and bird eaters, these guys are captive-bred. :)

Very neat snakes. Very eye popping (it had to be said)! O.O I do hope you keep up the progression pictures. And tell all about their care. How weak is the venom? What would you do if you were bit, for example?

Boiga venom is actually quite potent, but they have very tiny amounts of it. A bite would cause some local swelling and bruising, and unless you had an allergic reaction, it wouldn't kill you.

One of the worst actual snake bites I have ever seen was a bite from one of these beautiful snakes. The guy who was free handling them was bitten, but he thought it was a dry bite so he waited a week to get it treated. So he wakes up one morning, and his entire hand is black, and there were some gangrenous lesions forming in between the fold of his thumb and his index finger.
They said that it actually wasn't the venom that did it, though. His reaction to it, in conjunction with the amount of time he waited to seek treatment resulted in such serious wounds to his hand and an eventual allergic reaction/sepsis. I remember seeing a picture of the gorgeous, majestic tiny little snake with bright colors and huge eyes, and then seeing his hand after the bite in direct contrast to the snake really made quite the impact on me.
And the guy's hand is fine now, btw. I think it's safe to say he learned his lesson, lol.

Oh you definitely want to treat it like any other snake bite, just letting it sit there and fester probably won't do you any favors! His reaction was probably worse than the norm, like you said.
