Breaking News....Burmese Kills 2y/o....

I have a program for about fifty 3-12 year olds and their parents on Tuesday. Among the 8 snakes I'm taking will be my 12-13 foot burmese python. I'm curious to see if this story comes up.

All those idiots that want to kill the snakes, kill the owners, etc. are obviously misinformed. Nobody here is doubting that... I'm betting that they've never had the experience of really learning what makes these animals so amazing. I don't do as many programs per year as I used to, but even at public programs at the zoo where people are free to come and go (I would start out with leos or turtles or something small and usually build to the snakes and gators...i.e. the "bad" reptiles), I would very very rarely have somebody get up and leave on account of the horrible creatures.

Almost daily I would talk to people before the reptile shows started, and usually there were a few people who were "deathly afraid" of snakes for one reason or another. Usually they would end up being the ones right up front and asking the most questions by the end of the program.

All it takes is a little bit of education on the subject, for owners and the idiots who think that we're somehow doing something wrong, to get a feel for the real situation. Yes, they can be dangerous, but so can a gun, a dog, a car, a bottle of beer, or just about anything else. Hell, if you get the right person, a bee sting or a peanut is a life threatening situation!

Glad I am not on that board...

"that's the kind of thing that happens when you a WTP in the home. what is a WTP? thanks for asking... that's a white trash pet.. very very few physicians, dentists, stockbrokers, pharmacists, lawyers, surgeons, engineers, computer analysts, college professors, and other degreed professionals have a WTP. it's always some
mullet with a rusted out camaro/firebird/trans am in a trailer park."

Can you believe the dog pooh that is being said about snake owners/breeders? Wow oh wow!!

It really is not good that there are so many Ignorant people out there..
.....................not good at all...

I know it is not just in the reptile pet industry but in the dogs' and cats' as well. There is misinformation out there on snakes but there is also so much proper information and it is easy to get one's hands on. Why do we continuously see stories like this in the news? A dog did this, a snake did that. If we want to continue to have the freedom to pick your own pet, then we need to get educated and be responsible people!
I agree. Information is only too easy to find on any snake in the known world. People have no excuse for not knowing, and it's a shame how easy it is for anybody to get a snake that's big enough that it could kill a child. Clearly it's not the snakes fault, and it should have been in a secure environment with the right set-up.

I know this is not the place nor the time to go off, but I am saddened and sick over stories like this; along with the animal cruelty stories. Humans are better than this!
I wish we were, and I think most of us are, but all it takes is one person to affect a dozen.[/QUOTE]

"anyone who feels the need to own a Boa or pythons need to move where these Reptiles are native to, and stop thinking they are house hold pets. They are not!!!!!!!!!! these are very sick people who feel it is okay to own any such pet. when you have to kill a rat or chicken to feed your house pet you have huge issues.and I sure DO NOT want you in my neighborhood."
WOW!. That is ridiculous. The same people who say stuff like this have to kill cows and pigs to feed their children. I know children are more important than snakes, but this argument is ignorant. People should be able to live anywhere in the country with their pets, snakes or other, without these kind of judgements. Owning a snake has no consistent character traits, and is as diverse a group as any. Yes, some people abuse the right to own such exotic pet's, but most take it very seriously, and learning about creatures like snakes does a lot of good for those who take the interest!.

This is just way too sad and in so many ways. Look where the "general public" is taking this story...

The general public is, for the most part, prone to panic and bad decisions. To quote Tommy Lee Jones in MIB "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky animals."

Amen to this! It also takes the reptile community as a whole standing up and being responsible, as people mentioned earlier in this post.

I guess this is why I am a teacher with my two degrees instead of one of those other "better" trades... got to go, my mullet needs repairing. TTYL!

I could take out the entire family down the street with peanuts and a strawberry.

I will not rest until every legume has been removed from the face of Planet Earth.

No doubt, this is tragic, and was entirely preventable.

The comments from the Click Orlando article are so full of stupid that it hurts.

" very very few physicians, dentists, stockbrokers, pharmacists, lawyers, surgeons, engineers, computer analysts, college professors, and other degreed professionals have a WTP. "

I think they would be very surprised at the professions of many people on this and other reptile boards! ;)

I very sorry for the family of the girl and it is heartbreaking that a little kid (let alone anyone) was killed.

I hate watching the news clips when these things happen they are always against the animals, the responsible people who own them and are always filled with incorrect information.

Did anyone else notice that when they were talking about Burms they but up a picture of a BP and then said they live in Africa and can grow to 30 ft? TThat made me want to slap myself for their stupidty. If you are going to do a news report on something you should at least know what your talking about and get the facts straight.

I kinda feel liek a butt saying this but:
I have to be realistic here....
I do not care about the little girl that was killed. I did not know her, I will not feel bad. I had no Human emotions attached to this kid. as far as I see this. It is just Nature doing its thing.
I refuse to be mad at the snake..infact I will never bed mad at an animal doing what comes natural..its just stupid..
I love my snakes and will never stop. I dont think anyone is to blame the snake.
Blame the parents..Blame the child.
I dont care how old the child is..most animals are born with a sense of danger. As humans..we are not. We have a great Mind that lets us do great things..even stupid things (like attaching emotions to "EVERYTHING").
But as a creature we are weak..and over populating the planet and possibly doing more harm than we know.
that being said. I Dont care what happens to a kid I don't know..or have never known..Because besides stupid butts trying to ban out pet sankes..this will not effect me personally.
It is making me mad..I'd like to give those dorks (people on the news posts) a piece of my mind.
:eats02:

sorry to come accross as Mean but its the truth..
how many people cried over this news....?......exactally.
like I said before
Natural selection....weather it be the parents of the child at fault..
if a 2 yr. old just died naturally..(what does that mean anyway....almost anything can be considered natural..i.e. naturally you would die if you were to jump off a cliff..see..)
anyway..we would have seen such a big deal being made.

anyway I apologize again. to you guys at CS.com.I dont want to sound like a mean person..But I side with the snake....

That's a little much, I feel terrible for the child. Sure I don't know her personally, but I can't imagine a similar pain to losing a child. I don't think it's a matter of siding with the snake, parents, or the child, it's a matter of siding with being a realist.
Children are always adventuring, large snakes can be dangerous, keeping one requires knowledge and responsible ownership, and an escaped snake (especially a large one) is liable to attack a human (especially a small one), whether out of fear or in a predatory way.
This would be terrible if it affects reptile ownership, but we shouldn't be so quick to throw rocks just to compete with the other sides irrational reaction to this story.

Hey, I used to be a college professor and I have two degrees. Does that mean I can't have my snakes anymore? I don't want to live in a trailer park with you guys. I don’t have enough hair to grow a mullet, although I’ve got a great start on a beer belly. You should see me in a wife beater T shirt.

I think anytime a child dies its sad. They come into the world and light everything up, their precious, adventurous, hillarious, sweet, and pure in so many ways. This child will miss out on riding her first bike, climbing trees, playing tag, eating snocones, birthdays, christmas, school, an all the other things we take for granted. I don't blame her or the snake and to an extent I agree that keeping large snakes, venomous, and potentially dangerous snakes in your home with small children should be done with a lot of precautions beforehand or not at all. Obviously the cage was not secure nor in a secured room where upon escape it couldn't venture into the rest of the house and a horrible accident happened. It's tragic IMHO, but not criminal- just really sad:(

First off it deeply saddens me that this child died
Second off it pisses me off that parents can be so negligent.
We need to write to USARK making sure our rights will be protected through this

See....

I told you......

Sad............

Just sad.

I am sad how this story made me react. Made others post some real uneducated, hurtful things about the other people in our world. Made some of my herp friends angry and some were even hurt by this story. Seeing how we as a peoples could say some of the things that were said on that link, is just wrong and again sad.

This has been a pretty sad past few weeks with the stories in the news and on the internet. Now I am at a lose for words, I am sad and I feel sad. I guess I just dont get it. Yes, I have smiled and laught at some of our comments here and they are much needed. I hope to not read anymore on this story on line, I just cant handle it all around.

Hugs
PJ

I have to say I am somewhat with Amanda on this one. It's sad that a kid lost her life... but I am more angry with the incompetent snake keeper that allowed this to happen, and the impact that this and other stories like it will have on my ability to keep a burm or retic in the future. It's stories like this that will preclude other people judging MY ability and right to keep a big constrictor based on the actions of a few incompetent individuals. It's not fair, it's not just, and it pisses me off.

It bring up the old debate about permit systems. Are they worthwhile? I thought Florida had one, and to be honest I am not certain what the system entails. Does it entail a home inspection whereby someone checks the accomodations that a person has for a large, dangerous snake? Was this person subject to the permit system or grand-fathered in?

It looks like this guy was supposed to have had, but didn't have a permit for the animal. That's what was said on the Yahoo story anyway..

'Burmese Python' is also the second most popular search on Yahoo at the moment. Scary..
