Breeding with a classic corn?

Of course! But you will only get normals, unless the normal has hidden hets (heterozygous genes- only one copy of a gene that takes two copies to make it visible) that match what the morph has.

I'd wager most of us (who breed, anyway) have! Like Nanci said, all babies will be normals, barring matching hets.

Okay, cool. That's what I thought in terms of only getting normals, but I did want to know a way to get something else. :p Thanks. :)

Usually people breed two morphs, like a lavender and a bloodred, and get normals het for lavender and bloodred. Then breed the normals together and get some lavenders, some bloodreds, and some lavender bloodreds. And some normals!

It happens quite often, though, that when breeding for one morph, a hidden gene that both parents carry will pop up as a surprise.

I really want a bloodred. :3

In your experience, have you had any special results?

Sure, but more often it's a gene I *didn't* want popping up. If you want a bloodred, it's a LOT cheaper to just buy one than breed hets to make your own!

I like what everyone said above. Its spot on :)

If you truly want to breed this snake(normal coloration) then I would breed it to a corn with lots of other known genes. Like a bloodred that is het amel anery(common hets), or any combination like that. You never know you just maybe surprised what pops out. Every once in a while you might see "Het tester" ( a snake with a bunch of known hets) for sale in the classified section. I know we had some last year that were 5 hets. Good luck on your venture :)

Thank you! Great tips

Thanks for posting this svo7321 and thanks to all who replied. This was another great perspective on corn breeding for us newbies!!! i own both anery and amel males so the idea of a unique morph thats het amel anery is cool to me. But i also want to find one of these "het testers" also. back to corncalc i go! ahhhhhhhh getting so drawn into this! help! ;)

Motley sunglow I would get a pair of snow girls for your boys :) Snow is amel + anery. I love snows my male is big enough this year so he'll have some girls and test some for other hets!

Thank you for your recommendation Wyldrose. I have been considering that aswell. ;) my goal is for a variety clutch but i wouldnt mind testing for some unknown hets also such as hypo. I would also like to add a high contrast morph to the group also!

There is one more aspect besides the specific genes. That is the traits and the line of the snake.

There are classics bred for orange colour and wide black borders, that is okeetees and there is normals bred for grey colour with red blotches, like miamis.

When you breed normals you should look at your snakes favorable traits and breed to another snake with the same good traits (and in the next generation select the best hatchlings that is better than their parents).

They say classics are normals, but they can have hundreds of different looks.
