Can snakes be fed a vegan diet?

I started to post after reading this entire thread. I will admit that I found the title to be interesting, but the more I read the more I felt myself getting upset. Truth is if there were no animals that preyed on rodents there would be no vegetables or grain crops for those who choose not to eat meat. I respect, even admire, those who do not eat meat whether it is for principal or health, but some animals cannot do this and survive. There are plenty of other pets one can own that will eat a vegan diet and survive. Choose a pet that matches your lifestyle and respect others that do the same. Now let's start an NRA thread! LOL

idk yea they deserve a healthy diet of mice and thats it. Now on the other hand i would just want to see a snake eat a peice of lettice i would laugh my arce off lol

Apparently the original poster has left the forum, probably off to go dump blood on fur coats or something. Where the hell do they get the blood in the first place anyway?

That's what I've always wondered about as well. Maybe they find a better use for the blood of the animals they "rescue" in order to propagate the myth that killing animals for profit is wrong, but killing animals for a cause is just fine as the ends justify the means. I would never wear a fur coat, but I am a painter so I do benefit from the mink industry.

A few years back I heard of a woman getting charged with cruelty to animals because she fed her cats vegetables until they went blind. My cats are indoors only, but the amount of spiders I've seen them munch is just awesome.

As far as the topic of snake food goes, that is the main reason I had to wait twenty years before I could own one. I almost had my mom talked into letting me get a snake when she thought they ate things like bugs and fruit (yes she thought they could eat fruit.) At the pet store as I was picking out Denizen she discovered the awful truth. She was so mad at me for not telling her that she wouldn't even let me keep a garter snake or a lizard. Some people never bother to understand subjects that they are not required to be tested on at a later date.

I have to comment on this thread because its ages old and wa to many pages long. But im going to answer straight up.

No there is no vegan diet for a snake, the hundres of replies here tell u that. as far and human treatment of the mice.

I breed my own they have healthy stimulating lives, I use a CO2 chamber this makes the animal simply fall to sleep and die in its sleep. It is one of only two forms of death the ASPCA aproves of for feeder mice. as far as killing many for one to survive, thats how life is. I love my mice i keep the ones i fall i love with for pets. i dont get attached to the ones im going to gas. If u cant handle it dont kill the snake. it makes u no better. find it another home. i know many here that would love to take it. this is my $0.02 and thats just that,

On the other hand i have nothing against you as a person. feel free to contact me with any care questions you have with other animals or reptiles. and have a good week :)

I just wonder what kind of life the frozen mice have had before being purchased. That's where the vegan idea originated. My snake was adopted from a previous owner. I wonder if for the greater good it would be more humane to painlessly kill my snake rather than buy frozen mice from the petstores in my area. Not because of the cost but because I don't like supporting petstores that sell animals.

How is killing the snake going to make a difference? If you can't find a supplier who meets your moral views, you should look to rehome the animal, NOT kill it! Doesn't sound very vegan to kill the snake to me...

Well if you just sit down and think about what's being suggested...it just is flat out ridiculous. I don't support a dog being fed a vegan diet, and they're more flexible with food than a snake would be. When I first saw this question I just shook my head. There's always somebody trying to fit their little moral system into the animal kingdom.

How is this thread still alive?

This topic should have been deleted from day 1.
Why is still here ?

Because threads/posts aren't deleted on this forum, unless they're excessively offensive. Overmoderation leads to an unhappy community. I'll agree that the question might not make sense to some people, but some might have found the discussion enlightening.

OK.

It just makes about as much sense as something like:

I want to be a firefighter but I don't believe in wasting water, how many rocks do I need to throw at a fire to put it out ?

My child wants to run around and be hyper, what works best ?
Tie him to a post or inject with horse tranquilizers ?

I think I sprained my ankle, should I chop off my leg or kill myself ?

My car is outta gas, should I replace the engine or just buy a new car ?

I ordered food at a restaurant I've never been to before and it wasnt very good at all as well as making me sick, should I keep going back til they get it right ?
...would getting it "to go" help at all ?

2 countries have been at war for sometime now, should we nuke them both to put an end to all this violence ?

My dog want to bark when the door bell rings, should I remove his vocal chords or move to Antarctica ?

Actually some of those make MORE sense ^

Why is still here ?

Possibly because there are some people who wonder it. I have mildly wondered if they can, but it's not something I'd be interested in trying since it's fairly well proven that most snakes enjoy rodents.

Indeed...when I was a vet tech I got to see a few people kill their animals that way right toward the end of the recall scare. Why people thought tossing their dog a chicken breast twice a day was a complete diet is beyond me.

IMO, this is why so many vets are against raw feeding.
My dogs & ferrets eat raw & whole prey.

One of the worst PETA films I've seen shows live animals, a sort of raccoon dog farmed in eastern Europe being skinned alive by the 'callous workers'. Of course what isn't revealed is that PETA set up and paid for the live skinning session. Just a few seconds thought makes it obvious that skinning the animals live is difficult and takes longer because they are wriggling and thrashing about, not at all an efficient way to precede on a commercial fur farm. But it looks horrific and probably outraged plenty of people into donating to PETA

PETA is evil! They are responsible for thousands of animals. I will never support them!

Ah I see, that is a good point.
Simply put, you need to know this before owning a snake.

Cats are pretty much the same, the ideal diet is whole prey items(although cats will consume some grass).
My vet took me to the cleaners over my cat's sensitivity's to retail cat food(veg & fillers = IBS), she's on specialized canned food now but for a while we had to feed her raw buffalo or raw chicken and dry food from the vet.
Let's not mess with digestive tracts that were fine tuned over thousands of years...put that celery down y'all ! ! !

Have to remember that there's some sources that claim that you feed baby corns crickets instead of pinkies. A lot of people aren't wise enough to sort through the garbage to get to the good information.

you feed your dog raw meat?? wtf you need too L2 pets
what do you mean by this?
I feed my dogs raw meat. They get Darwin raw dog food (they have a cat formula too, but I haven't been able to get mine to eat it yet).
*Balanced* raw, is one of the best things you can feed cats/dogs/ferrets (whole prey is ideal).
