Can You Identify James-Striker?

Hello, I am new to the forums and this is my first introductory post. I just recently got this corn snake from a friend who could not take care if it anymore due to him moving back home. I was told its a corn snake and its at least 10 years old. He is very gentle and has not bitten me in the 2 months ive had him. Can you please identify what type of corn snake James-Striker is? I think he might be a kastchie or anerythristic but im not sure. Thanks!

Looks like he had a bad shed at some point =0

I like that full body shot. He's got some nice overall tone

thank you for identifying him! also - how can you tell he had a bad shed in the past? is there any way this will affect him for the future or how I can change it for the future? Thanks

Looks like a really nice anery! Looks like a big boy! lol

Nice to see you are so concerned about his wellbeing too! I am not sure why it was said he may have had a bad shed at some stage, so I would prefer not to second guess anyone...lol I would THINK its because it looks like the tip of his tail is missing...but again, leaving that for the experts! lol

Best of luck with your lovely boy!!

PS: Are you sure its a boy? :)

Yea, the tip of his tail looks to be missing, which is probably due to a bad shed. But still a nice looking anery there!

I'm so glad your friend found a good home for him. It'd be hard to part with an animal you'd had for ten years.

Agreed,it was the 1st thing that came to mind when I saw these pics.
Awesome Anery there.

oh no - I did notice his tail was very sensitive when I held him, but I just thought his quick movement was from instinct or snakes just dont like their tails being touched. If it is due to a bad shed, is there anything now that I can do for him now or in the future for his next shed?

I've been trying to learn as much about these snakes as possible in the past 2 months learning from forums and care sheets, so I thank you for any input you have on how to fix his tail problem.

Also - My buddy told me it was a male and his original name was James so I believed that its a male. Is there any way that I can tell that its male/female by looking myself without hurting the snake?

Once again, im glad I finally posted on here and am hoping to continue to learn about these snakes.

experienced people can sometimes tell if a snake is male or female based on the shape of the tail from the underside, but it is unreliable. unfortunatly there is nothing you can do about the missing tip now, but you can prevent more from happening by making sure when he sheds it ALL comes off.
he's a beautiful boy :) i really like his head pattern, how it's all kind of... smattery...
congrats on your guy, and show us pics when you get more, cause now that you have one... it's all over and the addiction has taken hold MWAHAHAHA

lol Agreed! Welcome to the addiction!! lol

The only way to tell for sure what he/she is, is to have him probed. Some experts can tell by looking at the tail but this is not 100%! For example, many people swore that my guy was a female! Right until we had him probed and he turned out to be a boy!!! lol :grin01:

well I already named him James Striker, so I think I will let it remain a mystery because I dont have the experience to probe him and I don't really want to transport him anywhere if I dont need to. In the future if anything happens and I need to take him to the vet, then I'll ask them to probe him.

also how do i make sure that he fully sheds and what should I look for during a shed? I've only seen him shed once in the time ive had him... but I didn't actually see it happen, the skin was just in the cage one day when I got back from classes. Thanks

First of all congrats on taking in a beautiful anery, he really is a nice looking snake, and welcome to the forums.

As for his sheds, the best thing to do is check the shed when you find it. Make sure that the eye caps and the tail tip are present on the old skin, if you don't seem them then check the snake and if any old skin is stuck on him, then you can do one of several things to get it off.

1) Let him soak in warm water for a bit, then let him crawl through a towel (cloth or paper) while squeezing gently, this will help him pull of the old skin.

2) You can leave a moist hide (a dark enclosure with slightly moist/damp moss or paper towel) in his cage and he should sit in it to loosen the skin up.

If the tail tip seems a bit tender, be extra careful when checking it for old skin, but it is best to always check it after every shed. It almost looks like there's a bit of a scab on his tail tip, if there is you can put a small dab of neosporan or polysporan (sp??) on it to help it heal.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Jenn
