Cat help... Not pretty.

I checked with my mother, and he had his Leukemia shot about a month ago, so the chances of it being that is slim, thankfully :)
And I hope I didn't sound grumpy, lol! We've got people coming over, and it seems like everyone is getting a little twitchy in this household. Everything's gotta be spotless!
I'll update this on Monday, to say if he had to be force-fed or not, and from then on when he's recovered. Once again, THANK YOU ALL. You made a scary night not-so-scary. Having suggestions to fall back on makes anything much easier.

That's great news on the leukemia shot front. And yeah, having to get the household spotless is stress-y.

Human tuna is no worse for cats than it is for humans, unless you're feeding it exclusively, or a fair portion of the diet. Fish fed exclusively to cats causes steatitis, basically a vitamin e deficiency.

With a sick cat, ANYTHING you can get into them is better than NOTHING, even if that something is tuna out of a can.

Personally I prefer meat baby food, with no onion, warmed up a little. Also remember that things warmed up smells nastier, and they have to be able to smell it to eat it

So ahm, ...did you ask your vets opinion on canned tuna fit for human consumption? Because the 3 vets I've asked have always agreed, that it's not good, and can lead to crystals in there urine. Which can kill an adult cat.
For those that don't believe me, that's fine. But PLEASE do a search, and then ask REAL vet, before you feed this to your cat.

glad to hear that your cat will be okay. :) i havent been in that situation so i cant really give any advice but im glad to see that there are others on here that are knowledgeable about whats going on. once again i hope everything works out for the best and that you can get your cat to eat. :))

I did. My vet said that with a sick cat, not eating anything is more of a danger, but that human tuna should NOT be fed regularly, because the stuff packed in oil leads to vitamin deficiency, and the stuff packed in water can lead to struvite crystals in the bladder/kidneys just as you said.

My first thought is the same as everyone elses, an upper respitory infection. It's nothing to panic about, but he does need to be treated. As a previous person mentioned, his symptoms are also that of a flare up of the herpes virus. In a viral case there is no treatment, just keeping him as comfy as possible till it runs it's course. He still needs to get to a vet, it could always be something else, less common.

One option that hasn't been mentioned yet is to offer unflavored Pedialite to drink, it has electrolites and the such, which will help him. If he doesn't go for it, maybe try some broth or tuna juice.

Good luck with your kitty, and make sure to give him extra love!:)

He's been to a vet :shrugs: So far, the diagnosis is just a viral infection, which, life you said, just has to run its course. There was no mention of herpes at all by the vet so, like I also said before, I'm not going to jump the gun. I'll rely on the vet from this point on. He'll also be checked out by our regular vet, just to have another opinion, one we're more comfortable with.
He has eaten, just a few bites, but he has done it. He's eating the gravy from the cat food, and has eaten a few bites of the food itself. As I said, he looks 100% better today than he did yesterday, which is probably a result of treatment and the antibiotics that the vet gave him. He's still playful, he's destroyed the bathroom by playing on the blankets, and he still bites the brush when it comes to grooming :) So, I'm going to say he's getting better. A couples more weeks of TLC should do the trick.

Great news! He's acting well, he's eaten a little, it's all good. Thanks for the update & keep us posted!

I'm an RVT. We keep, and use, human-grade tuna for the cats here. There are any *number* of things that can cause cats to develop crystals, and it really depends on the cat just as not *all* dogs will go into kidney failure from grapes/raisins, but a few will. I've seen plenty of cats that have developed crystals that were never fed tuna or any fish.

To the vet techs: FIV "looks" really like HIV in the scientific literature. Do vets treat FIV with HIV drugs? I know the HIV drugs are made in liquid forms so the dose can be adjusted to body weight for babies and young children, so the problem of getting the correct mg/kg could be solved, but I don't know if HIV drugs work, or if veterinarians are doing it.

I think expense is the main issue. Treatment is usually palliative and preventative, namely isolation from other cats to reduce exposure to common feline infectious diseases, good nutrition, etc. I've seen cats go 6 or 7 years after infection with FIV which is equivalent to almost 30 years for a human.

He ate today :) Looking much better, not as much discharge. Spunky, too. Should be meowing tonight, lol. He doesn't like being locked up.

Great news! Sounds like the worst is over. Thanks for updating us. I am a softie who worries.

Last update for this; He's completely healthy now :) Eats fine, poops fine, plays fine, and even finds the energy to eat my alg. homework, lol. He put up enough of a racket about a night ago that he got the other two cats attacking each other, so we're pretty convinced he's much better now. Thank you for all of the help, everyone! It was a rough few days, but he, we, and everyone else managed to pull through :p

Alright, I lied about the last update :S I couldn't let you all leave without seeing how he normally looks, besides his mucus-y face. So here's my baby all better :) No more mucus, sneezing, lethargy, or lack of eating. I took a 3 hour nap with him today, and he ate my homework not to long ago. It's good to have my baby back.

Thank you both, and I'm super happy he's back to normal :) It was awkward sitting with him in the bathroom :p
